Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump both speak with a New York City accent. And Queens College linguist Michael Newman thinks it might be good for their brand. Writing in the New York Times, he said:
"Americans have come to associate New Yorkers, and so New York accents, with saying what you mean, intense emotional talk and not worrying too much about whom you offend."
But the larger pattern outside this year's presidential race is that the New York City accent is stigmatized, and its most distinctive features are fading.
That's why Bernie Sanders provides such an interesting case study. He was born in 1941 and raised in a lower-middle-class household in a Jewish part of Brooklyn. Even though he's now spent more of his life in Vermont than in New York, his voice tells a story of his past and the past of the nation's greatest city.

@Nick Arjomand the DNC also admitted they rigged the 2016 primary and a federal court ruled they are ALLOWED to select their own candidate. But that completely defeats the democratic process which is the entire point and why so many voters become fatigued and ambivalent.

I don’t think it’s intentional. If you hear cwahfee (coffee) and worsh (wash) at home but cough-fee and waash all over on the radio and tv you’re probably gonna end up pronouncing Those words somewhere in-between. And if you’re local accents less pronounced it’s probably gonna be even less pronounced by your kids especially nowadays with kids hearing accents from all over the country and world from an early age.

I think Bernie’s story can be told like this:
Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I liked to take a minute
    Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Burlington
In west Brooklyn born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Burlington
I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suite case and send me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket.
I put my walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'.
First class, yo this is bad
Drinking orang juice out of a champagne glass.
Is this what the people of Burlington Living like?
    Hmm this might be alright.
But wait I hear they're prissy, bourgeois, all that
Is Burlington the type of place they send this cool cat?
    I don't think so
I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for the prince of Burlington
Well uh the plane landed and when I came out
There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out
I ain't trying to get arrested yet
    I just got here
I sprang with the quickness like lightening, disappeared
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rare
But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Burlington
I pulled up to the house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo, homes smell ya later'
    I looked at my kingdom
    I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Burlington

James McTrollington as she says at the end, saying 'what' without stressing the h would have been considered uneducated at one point. so that's how, people will strive for an accent with a positive connotation and more importantly, they will enforce it in their kids. it's a gradual process.

Loss of regional accents is actually becoming pretty common everywhere. I would say the majority of people under 30 in the south no longer speak with a southern accent in normal speech. However, I have noticed that whenever someone is frustrated or angry they tend to revert back to their regional dialect. Ie Spanish speaking people arguing in Spanish, and for southern people certain words come out differently.
