I’ve been working night shift for the past year. I gained 10lbs within 5 months of working night shift. I struggled to lose those 10lbs because am always so hungry at night. I started doing the fasting and I’ve been able to lose about 5lbs. Not as fast as I would want to lose it but it’s hard when you are up all night and can’t get enough sleep during the day because you have other responsibilities. I still have 5more lbs to lose. Wish me luck. Ps. I workout at least 3 times a week.
Night shift is tough. I actually took a pay cut just to go back to Dayshift. Not trying to be a jerk, but I would get off that shift if possible. It’s so much more difficult to be healthy and lose weight because it messes up hormones.
this makes a lot of sense. actually my method is if for whatever reason (work relationship mismanagement of time) I need to sleep for five hours, I eat much less. It takes mental fortitude, but it works for my overall health and fitness.
I’m struggling. I’ve lost as much as 44 pounds with intermittent fasting, my kind of keto, and just eating right. But I continue to go through periods where I gain weight back…not close to where I was, but I still gain. You know why? Because I get hungry! 😉😂
Tell yourself that the hunger will go away pretty soon. It ebbs and flows throughout the day. Just wait and it will lessen. Busy yourself with other interesting things. I tell myself - "Today is a fasting day and I'm not eating today. I'll eat tomorrow" and somehow that helps me a lot. Good luck - you can do it!
If you at having too many *cheat days* where carbs are overly consumed then that will Keep Triggering the Hunger hormone!! I think it's called 'gherlin'?🤔 Also snacking, yes, even Healthy Snacking will Trigger your insulin response and cause your body to store most of the calories instead of burning them for fuel. Try to Only eat during your designated eating-window!😉 Good luck,.....You Got This!!😎
I’ve definitely been sleeping better since I’ve started fasting. But what’s interesting is, I don’t eat too much anyway. Especially when I’m tired. I have no appetite when I’m sleep deprived. Even if I’m both tired and hungry, tired wins every time. 😆
Boy that’s another excuse for my weight gain over many yrs- I was RN working night shift about 30 yrs of my career. The last 14 yrs I was working 12 hr night shifts., rarely got 5 hr sleep on work days and bout 7 on days off. My BGs (T1DM) were all over the map. Haven’t worked in 6 yr and my sleep patterns still aren’t that great but I usually get about 7 hr although interrupted needing to void at least once. Thanks for this report.

After nineteen years in the fire service I was so tired I slept 12 hours every night for over a year...and napped on weekends when my husband was home to take care of the kids. Sleep deprivation sucks.
All I want is to sleep longer than 3 hours without waking up😭. Since getting sober from opiates 4 yrs ago I've not gotten deep sleep. I don't take anything to aid with sleep because as a recovering addict we tend to trade one addiction for another so I have to be very cautious. I've recently discovered biannual beats and have great hope that it will start to help....I really hope so. 😊

I have noticed that since I slept less hours I've been gaining weight. Thanks to this interesting video I am gonna try to increase my sleeping hours. I am curious to see if I get any results!
AGREE..Dr Fung I've discovered Losing fat and weight by sleeping more so I eat more probiotics at night and plenty of clear fluids I eat a whole meal afternoon then probiotics later in the day I get drowsy and got to sleep and wake up at 5am I've notice I'm burning carbs and getting slimmer..
I learned years ago that lack of sleep caused me to gain weight. I did home care and took an additional case overnight yet didn’t get any sleep the next day. I slept 5 nights a week for maybe for 6 hours. The weight flew on even though I ate less because I was working. I’m retired now but have not got into a healthy sleep pattern. Thanks for the reminder.
I applaud your optimism in thinking sleep deprived people can just snap their fingers and sleep another 90 minutes. As one of those folks, I can assure you that is NOT THE CASE!
Agreed we need a video on "how" to get more sleep. One thing that helps is getting some sunshine on my face during the day (vit. D & melatonin produxtion).

Personally, I've never been a great sleeper, but I follow a very healthy OMAD, Low-Carb, and exercise regime, and have done for the past 6 years. Thanks - Leo Low-Carb Lion
I stopped working shifts 2 years ago, since then I finally have been able to loose weight. Still I have trouble sleeping enough and when I have bad nights I am eating more.
did they lose weight because they slept in and had less daytime in the morning to eat? Or did they go to bed earlier in the evening, and something metabolic happened, independent of diet?
I’m a private-duty caregiver and work 12-hour night shifts. When I work days, I usually sleep pretty well, and feel pretty good. When I work nights, not so much. What are people who work nights supposed to do? I doubt I even get six hours a day.
One thing that helps me is going outside and getting at leat 1 hour of sunshine on my face. I work in an office in the PNW. So not easy to do, especially in winter. I think taking a vitamin D3 supplement with K mq7 also helps.
as I watch this video what I contemplate is how much physical weight I have to release: (75.2 Lbs to be precisely exact!) for the sake of my health and for my well-being. the thing is though... I realize that I desperately also hold on to all the excess weight: for safety and for comfort. dear God, please please please, help the weight dissolve off of me, and please help me to no longer have the need to hold on to any of it, for the illusion of safety and protection. I am ready to be permanently, forever released from these shackles...
There is one strange exception to this. In people with sleep apnea who start treatment with cpap and start to sleep more on average gain even more weight. And the more hrs they use there cpap the more weight they gain .
Doc, what if a person sleeps for 6 hours, wake up in the morning, and then take a nap in the afternoon for 1.5 hour. Will that count as 7.5 hours of sleep/day and that person will benefit from the higher leptin level and more weight loss or does nap not count??
Hormones have always been my problem. I gained a pot belly as soon as I started menstruating. I bet when I go into menopause, I will lose a lot more weight. Fasting is the only diet that works for me along with Organic teas / supplements

Thank you Dr Fung! Your lectures are so valuable and pleasant. I am looking forward to your short videos every time. Thank you again for your precious time and information!
@@Blackandwhitecat-u9v you are right. I will actually try to get off night shift as soon am able to.
I totally appreciate you for doing this video..

I've been working nightshift for decades, very difficult to sleep during the day time. I then get super hungry at work, I just want to eat constantly.
I lost weight by not eating at work. Plus you don't get lethargically tired from food
Thanks Dr Fung for everything you do.
this makes a lot of sense. actually my method is if for whatever reason (work relationship mismanagement of time) I need to sleep for five hours, I eat much less. It takes mental fortitude, but it works for my overall health and fitness.
Great video.

Thank you for these weekly videos 🥰
Exercise is actually extremely important. Alone, it does little for bad eating habits, but its effectiveness amplifies with keto and fasting.
Try checking your electrolytes. It may be off.
Try to Only eat during your designated eating-window!😉
Good luck,.....You Got This!!😎
Check out carnivore..Dr Ken berry, Dr Eric berg, Dr Ben bickmam...etc..happy carnivoring on your journey 💯..explain woe, sleep, etc..
Very interesting. I know I eat more when I’m tired, but the glucose spike is new info to me. I have to keep trying to keep human hours!
Thank You Very Very Much Dr. Fung!!!🥰
You Are So Wonderful to Make these Excellent Videos That Teach and Keep Encouraging Us To Keep Eating Very Low Carb and Intermittent Fasting and To Try to Get A Good Amount of Sleep Which Help Us Lose More Weight🙏🥰💕👏
Thank God for You and your great generous and caring Spirit and Life!!! God bless You so very much more!!!!🙏🙌❤️❤️👏
After nineteen years in the fire service I was so tired I slept 12 hours every night for over a year...and napped on weekends when my husband was home to take care of the kids. Sleep deprivation sucks.
Thank you for keeping us safe.
Brilliant connection!! Though easy on the easily actionable! Some of us have kids ;)
Another Awesome video Thanks Much Love ❤❤❤
Thank you! 🙂
I learned something new! Thank you 🤜🤛
All ur videos are useful doctor, thanks so much
Thank you for the information!!
thank you for sharing this great info doc... from philippines... ♥️
do some 72+ h fasts. It will be hard to sleep during the fast but it will fix your sleep issues in the long run.
Your thyroid could be dead from doing drugs & perhaps smoking? Order Iodoral 12.5 tabs online & take 1 in the evening. U will sleep like a baby & restore your thyroid
You may want to work on your adrenals. I found the adrenal info from medical medium really helped me with the same issues. Magnesium is a must for me.
@@effigy8620 is that a TH-cam channel? Thank you for the suggestion, I will definitely check that out. 😁
Thank you For your information more reason to get more sleep God bless you
Cheers Jason!

Have you tried bone broth before bed?

This is exactly my problem 😞I started night shift 6-7 months ago. I put on alot of weight 😩..I'm exausted..and I can't stop eating
I been trying to fast it's really hard I keep forgetting what I'm doing
I sure sleep more when the electricity go out...
Enough sleep and reduced stress overall does wonders for my mood, appetite, overall well-being, and weight management.
Thanks for all you do, Dr. Fung.
Great upload, Doc! Absolutely, sleep is so important, and I'm sure almost everyone would get more sleep if they could. With sleep disorders, it's easier said than done.
Personally, I've never been a great sleeper, but I follow a very healthy OMAD, Low-Carb, and exercise regime, and have done for the past 6 years. Thanks - Leo Low-Carb Lion
Hello Dr. Fu ng. Love all your video. Question: Is Sleep Aid that contain 375 mg of L-Theanine. Melatonin and GABA with 10 calorie will break my fast?
Thank you
I stopped working shifts 2 years ago, since then I finally have been able to loose weight. Still I have trouble sleeping enough and when I have bad nights I am eating more.

did they lose weight because they slept in and had less daytime in the morning to eat?
Or did they go to bed earlier in the evening, and something metabolic happened, independent of diet?
I should be sleeping instead of laying here watching this.
Thank you Dr Fung. If we do Omad dinner, how much time should we wait before going to sleep?
I’m a private-duty caregiver and work 12-hour night shifts. When I work days, I usually sleep pretty well, and feel pretty good. When I work nights, not so much. What are people who work nights supposed to do? I doubt I even get six hours a day.
Okay fine goodnight I Need to sleep now. Will continue watching you tomorrow
Saying is easy but sleeping is difficult if thought s come to mind even if u r on intermittent fasting
One thing that helps me is going outside and getting at leat 1 hour of sunshine on my face. I work in an office in the PNW. So not easy to do, especially in winter. I think taking a vitamin D3 supplement with K mq7 also helps.
as I watch this video what I contemplate
is how much physical weight I have to release:
(75.2 Lbs to be precisely exact!)
for the sake of my health
and for my well-being.
the thing is though...
I realize that I desperately also
hold on to all the excess weight:
for safety and for comfort.
dear God, please please please,
help the weight dissolve off of me,
and please help me to no longer have the need
to hold on to any of it, for the illusion
of safety and protection. I am ready
to be permanently, forever released
from these shackles...
some 72+ h fasts will start health benefits long before you lose it all
What are your recommendations for supplements to take while fasting in order to get more sleep?

Sleep is something natural
There is one strange exception to this. In people with sleep apnea who start treatment with cpap and start to sleep more on average gain even more weight. And the more hrs they use there cpap the more weight they gain .
it may be lean tissue
Ashwagandha before bed has Changed my life@ could not fall or stay asleep... it cuts cortisol and it works
Doc, what if a person sleeps for 6 hours, wake up in the morning, and then take a nap in the afternoon for 1.5 hour. Will that count as 7.5 hours of sleep/day and that person will benefit from the higher leptin level and more weight loss or does nap not count??
Yes that happens to me too with 6 hours. It means you're sleeping too little. I don't have that napping problem if I get 6.5hours of sleep.
Do you have any videos on “metabolism”. It’s just confusing can you damage your metabolism? What it is? Can you fix it?

Hey Dr Fung. Can you elaborate on what kind of food we should eat on non fasting days? Is it just all meat and veggies?
Hormones have always been my problem. I gained a pot belly as soon as I started menstruating. I bet when I go into menopause, I will lose a lot more weight. Fasting is the only diet
that works for me along with Organic teas / supplements
you gain weight in menopause
True, based on my experience.
Hoping to see a video on low gi as I'm confused about keto/low gi, is low gi good or keto better ?
