    The section starting 8:15 is a masterclass in tone: fingers, pick, close to bridge picking, close to neck, bending on the thick strings high up, etc.. The wide variety of tone is amazing and inspiring

    Great vid again Chris. I learn such a lot by listening to you play. You have amazing quality to your playing. I bought a KOT second hand about 10 years ago for about $300 Canadian Dollars (which seemed ridiculously high back then). Met a guy in a coffee shop and I handed him the cash. When I went to take the pedal off him, he didn't let go of it. We started having a bit of a tug of war over it. DUDE! I gave you the cash already. He finally let go and said he's having second thoughts. I reluctantly gave it back to him (being a gentleman of sorts). He paused for a minute and then changed his mind and let me have it. A week later he contacted me and wanted it back. He reminded me of Gollum in Lord of the Rings. ThankfullyI still have 'The Precious' on my board.

    Great soulful playing...what it’s all about. Someone told me in 2009 to get on the list. I said “a year for a pedal, are you mad?” Bought all sorts of pedals in the intervening years. One day thought why not put my name down...which I did with what was now a 2-year waiting list. It arrived in 2017. Should have put my name down in 2009. Don’t forget you’re ostensibly buying at a factory direct price. Nearly all other pedals are from a factory shipped to a distributor who needs a margin, then shipped to a retailer who also needs a margin, with VAT paid on that lot. KoT would likely be £400-£500 if it followed the typical distribution model. It’s a relative bargain but with a really annoying waiting list caused by hand built craftsmanship, carefully sourced components without compromise, by one of the worlds greatest pedal builders. Mind you try ordering a hand built USA Klon...oh they don’t exist anymore and you’ll need to pay £2000+ for an old one to get the sound as “klones” as good as they are are not quite ‘it’ for whatever frustrating reasons. My suggestion is get on the list and while waiting practise like hell in the hope you get to some of Chris’s capability for when it finally arrives.

    The first guitar solo is a tour de force. Just enough overdrive to give it energy and still retain the sweet melodic tones Chris is so good at. Love the decay and overtones on the harmonic at 0:12 . The use of the harmonic there is an example of why Chris is such a tasteful player. He could have simply hit a single note and sustained it but by using a more delicate harmonic and the short pause that follows it he creates a greater sense drama and dynamics.

Happy to wait because not only is it less expensive than second hand, but also (eventually) puts the money in the hands of Mike and the good people at AnalogMan instead of potentially unscrupulous secondhand sellers who only ordered in the first place with resale in mind, just looking to profit.

    I finally reached the top of the waiting list earlier this year. I bought it even though I am very happy with my present drive/boost pedals(D&M drive, Hudson Broadcast and Chase Bliss Condor). KOT is a great pedal and I intend to keep it but the D&M drive which it most likely would replace has a greater gain range so making it more appropriate for playing in a covers band. KOT does stack really well with the Broadcast though. Mmmmmmm perhaps I should give it another try

  • @jan_07
    @jan_07 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Amazing pedal! you gotta play it to believe the versatility (well, except if you’re going for a tight metal rhythm tone) and it’s very transparent indeed even on higher gain settings. I got mine in white, with the switch outside instead of having to deal with the dip-switches inside 😁

    I got the Prince of Tone. I think it wants to be slightly more mid-humped, but if you adjust the internal settings you get an awesome sound out of it. I like it so much that if I thought I needed two of the settings stacked, I would just get a second and avoid the 3 year wait for the KoT. I'm not saying the PoT is as good as the KoT, as I have never tried it. Just saying that I like the PoT... a lot. It and the Centura are my only pedals now. I run the Centura with gain almost cranked. The PoT as the boost/OD. Cool thing about both these pedals is that they act like amps. You can set them with the volume/compression/gain at your lead sound, then roll down the guitar and get cleans.

    I'm lucky to live about 30 minutes from Analogman in Connecticut. Whenever I buy an AM pedal (including my KOT), I drive right to the (tiny) workshop to pick it up. Mike is one of the nicest and most genuine guys in the business, and he and the small team there have so much pride in what they do. Mike always makes time for his customers and will answer any questions you have/ shoot the shit about gear and cars. Just a quick note: if you're looking at buying any AM pedal, try to buy direct instead of on reverb if the options are still available. The wait time is minimal (except the KOT, obviously), it's cheaper pretty much all the time, and most importantly, you're supporting the business.

    • @ChrisBuckGuitar
      @ChrisBuckGuitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's brilliant Brendan; thanks for the comment! I'm always in two minds when I answer critical/negative comments on the KOT - I have no horse in this race, so to speak, but I love the pedal and respect the way Mike goes about his business, literally and figuratively. The waiting list for the KOT is unfortunate (as he acknowledges on his site) but as I say in the video, is easy to see why it's in place. Hopefully there's a middle ground somewhere which keeps everyone happy...

    • @brendancarbone7621
      @brendancarbone7621 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisBuckGuitar Thanks Chris! Yeah, the wait time is unfortunate, but I think you hit the nail on the head when you talked about it in the video, plus the wait list is free to get on and be on. There's also some comfort that you'll never lose the money you paid for it unless you completely destroy the pedal

    Hi Chris ! The KOT is undoubtedly an awesome piece of gear. So is the Duellist by Jesse Davey. Both are available pre-owned at prohibitive prices. Or, with a (very) long lead time if you wish to purchase a new one. For those who won't go either way, there is a solution: the Super-Signa by CMatMods. It has two circuits (one OD and a volume driven Boost) that work independently, 3 band EQ, gain, output level, plus a switch for 3 voices that sits on top so you don't need to fumble around with internal dip switches. This is my desert Island, always on pedal, a vast array of sounds that make your favourite amp just blow the roof, get creamy tones without changing the voice of your guitar. Additionally, by tweaking the level of the boost combined with the OD, one can vary the output of the pickups, getting tones very similar to single coils with a humbucker thus giving clarity and sparkle to a dark pickup (very handy for those who play guitars with humbuckers that are not fitted with split switches). Chad Matthews builds them by hand, has a top service and customer relation and you can order from him directly. In fact, I like it so much, I have two, so I have a backup just in case anything happens... Oh: and it's 169 $ \m/

    Beautiful playing, as usual. I waited patiently to get to the top of the list for a few years (I may have forgotten about it :-{) & placed my order. The KoT is a great sounding pedal. I hear what people say about them being similar sounding to more mass produced pedals, but considering they are handmade (watch The Pedal Show's tour videos of Analogman's studio), I don't think they're too badly priced when purchasing direct. I have a Bondi Effects Del Mar and a Klon and they may swap out of my board, but the KoT I can't see being removed. If I needed a compact board, the KoT would definitely be on it for the boost OD combo. Finally, look at the price of Timeline and Big Sky, for example, these are very expensive pieces of kit.

    I find that the King of Tone, Morning Glory, and a good Klon clone complement each other quite well:
    MG - lovely warm tone
    Klone - lovely mid range tone
    KOT - lovely bright tone

    The 3 year waiting list doesn't justify the end result I'm afraid; if it truly were the best OD pedal then that's all Tim Pierce would have on his board, and it isn't. The waiting list is determined not by it being the best OD pedal in the world, it's determined by Analogman doing everything in-house, hand-made and to a standard that mass-manufacturing processes can't compete with. I do, however, applaud them for doing it in the way that they've chosen to do it.
    I have a KOT, a KOT clone, and various other OD pedals like the RevivalDrive, Timmy, Hamstead etc., and the KOT is not head and shoulders above any of those. In fact, those mentioned can do certain sounds better than the KOT, to my ears at least. Finally, all of those mentioned can be bought today, so personally I don't think that the hype over the KOT's sound is justified given how good the 100's of other OD pedals are.
    But, great playing and tone, as ever.

      Vick Audio Mount Pleasant is another superb BB-based pedal. I couldn't live without it, even when my KOT arrives it'll stay on the board. DOD Looking Glass also amazing.
      Heck, my humble Xotic AC Booster is still my default when I am not sure what OD to use. All of those can probably outdo the KOT in certain ways. But it is one of those things, I guess. Gotta catch em all! #GAS

      I have had so many overdrives over many years and the snouse blackbox 2 is the absolute best I have tried as far working with all guitars and amps for low to medium gain tones. The king of tone always had an unusual at times sterile, silvery feel and sound to it to me. Didn't quite love it like I thought I would.

    Cheers Chris, what a smoking intro, great stuff. Worth the hype? I dunno, sounds good with a great player no doubt, but with an average strat mangler? Who knows ....... though .... if you could lend me yours we could find out. For science ....... No? Ah well, worth a punt. Keep well. :)

    The Analogman Prince of Tone is made in asia but is available without too much of a wait. Two of those is "nearly" the same thing as a King of Tone, not exactly but for most purposes the difference is insignificant. You can get two Prince of Tones and stack them. Or... do as I did. I bought a Prince of Tone, and got on the waiting list. The Prince of Tone is a damn good pedal, you may find that's all you really wanted anyway!

    KOT has been my mainstay for years. Anyone who plays live or records will tell you it's the best. With overdrives they can all seem similar but plug this in a signal chain while recording and immediately watch your guitar cut clean, live it'll do the same. The frequencies are tuned perfectly, it's a simple thing but hard to get wrong that's why so many pedals sound good but ultimately don't do their job in helping you cut in a mix while maintaining the balance and eq of your rig. Last it's the toughest "clean" drive, just works beautifully in solos

    By keeping it in-house - Mike P can grade/select/test components to the standard he wants before releasing it. It sounds huge - esp with the dynamics you bring to this.

    • @ChrisBuckGuitar
      @ChrisBuckGuitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers David. I've seen that Mike manually tests components. I know it really gets some peoples' backs up that there's such demand and such a long wait but, it's his business (literally) and if he's found something that works come rain or come shine...who are we to criticise? There's always Reverb 🤷🏻‍♂️
