    The main title was actually written by Charles Williams (a Brit who was not related to John), and was called "Jealous Lover." It first appeared in a 1949 film called "The Romantic Age."

    The Apartment is one of the great romantic comedies Hollywood presented us during its golden era, directed by the great Billy Wilder.
    Adolph Deutsch provided a fantastic score (unfortunately to date only album cues exits).
    The lush Main Title is accompanied by the great piano skills of John(ny) Williams, who himself will soon become one of the leading figures of the movie industry. Enjoy!

      Hmmmm. I think of it more as a dramedy. It contains many seriously dramatic situations. It certainly wasn’t written just for laughs.

      @@mathykyte8339 Wilder himself said the movie wasn't a comedy.

      @mathykyte8339 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      mef2005 thx for backing me up on this. Though it had many amusing moments, it wasn’t quite a comedy, was it? But I have always thought of the theme music as lush. Hearing it on the radio and seeing the awards won by the film made me wish I could be old enough to see it myself. Probably the first time I could was on tv. I remember being delighted by how they worked that music into the plot, with such a fine tapestry of references to it. Nuances galore. Wilder sure could direct a picture superbly.

      Williams not only played piano on this score, but also contributed orchestrations and arrangements. The main theme of the film ("Jealous Lover") was composed by Charles Williams and was actually arranged by John Williams and Deutsch.

    • @handznet
      @handznet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s really beautiful theme. (Movie is a gem as well). The fact JW was playing piano there is such a fabulous trivia. Its really crazy to imagine that he is successfully in the movie music business for so long. Time has changed so many times but he remained actual and golden standard for decades

    An excellent soundtrack and choice for a download. Billy Wilder's THE APARTMENT (1960) is one of his masterpieces, always with comic touches that could just as easily read as tragicomedy. I never get tired of rewatching this film, which remains very much up to date, even if people were not yet on the I-Net or on Smartphone at the time. And what a sensitive musical theme...

    The music complements the film so well. I love how the main theme takes on multiple identities throughout the film - it first plays when Fran meets Sheldrake and also plays on the record she gives him, as if it’s a theme representing their affair. Then when that falls apart, it continues to pop up in the score to represent only her, and gradually begins to play more and more during her scenes with Baxter until it crescendos so triumphantly as she runs back to him at the end, effectively transforming the song into THEIR love theme. The underlying foundation for it all is Fran’s amazing character growth, specifically the development of her self-esteem. Fabulous.

    Gosh! Such a nice compostion...character variety for a movie that always keeps the viewer on that "feeling" of big city life humanity. And, for an era of the late 1950's through mid to latter 1960's, this movie with its great score shows how American city life was to many, a choice that had to have its search for companionship...good or not so good.
    Good score, Fred.

      Yes you’re absolutely right. That song captures the feeling and emotion of Jack sitting on the park bench so perfectly. You can almost feel the wind on your face and through the light jacket. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen this over the years. Another gem is “a thousand clowns “ with Jason Robards. I think you’d like it

The old black and white movie that featured was called MARY, QUEEN AND MOTHER' and the channel was British Pathe. And the music was really LOVELY. It had an Eric Coates 'Three Elizabeths' sound to it. And I thought, 'Fred will know what music that is - probably right up his street.' Beautiful music, really. I'd so appreciate knowing. Thanks!
