📊 How to use Power BI DAX - Tutorial

  • In this step-by-step tutorial for beginners, learn how to use DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) in Microsoft Power BI. DAX is a formula language with functions. If you've ever written formulas in Excel, you'll find that DAX is very familiar.
We'll start by loading the sample data into a data model. Next, we establish relationships between the various tables.
Once the setup is complete, we'll write our first measure. A measure is a calculation that runs across our data model. You'll learn about a few different functions, including sum and count. You'll also learn how to comment your expressions.
Next, we create a measure using operators, like addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. We then dive into how you can create measures using a graphical user interface called Quick Measures.
We then move onto creating a calculated column and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of columns vs. measures.
We then dig into iterator functions and when you would use them compared to an aggregator function. Iterator functions include sumx, countx, averagex, maxx, minx, and rankx.
Next, we look at the date functions that are available and we use the one called weekday.
We wrap up by looking at some logical functions, including find, if, and calculate.

Today I went to a work interview (Thursday). They asked me if I was good on Power BI, and I never heard about it before. They said they could get around it, but I said I would be able to master it by Monday. Your videos popped up on my search and as I followed them, I feel like I'm ready in just one day. Really nice, powerful and simple at the same time program. Thanks to your tutorials, the introduction to this program was easy for me. Keep up with these videos. @@dexxxxxxxx Hi and thanks for your question. Power BI is a small part of a massive and very lucrative field, which is Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence. With the rise of big data, BI has become a high-demand career.
So, yes - there are lots of jobs available. You can choose to focus just on Power BI or focus on BI in general, Data Warehousing or Dimensional Modelling.

For the bar chart of the weekdays at around 29:55, the values add up to over 700 (greater than the number of rows in the data). To correct this issue, in my version of Power BI, for the bar chart, I had to select "Count of Day of Week" in "Values" and then place "Day of Week" in "Axis". Thanks so much for your work Kevin! I appreciate your clear overview.

Day of week vs Count of Day of Week? That still wont mean anything. It should have been Day of Week vs Units Sold.

I think it should be count of order id

Nicely done, Kevin! On your Day of the Week part of the video, you are adding them (instead of adding Orders) and slicing by Days of the Week as well in that visual.
