  • Which Strat Will Take You to the Stratosphere?
In this video, I am comparing Fender's American Professional with a John Mayer Signature and a Custom Shop Stratocaster. All Strats have D‘Addario NYXL 09-46 on them. I am playing a Boss GE-7 Equalizer, a Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion, and an Electron Analog Drive trough a Career by Felleretta AF Tube.

Thanks for this. In the future keep in mind that aural memory is not as honed as other senses. It’s much better for the listener to hear position 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc. rather than all positions on one guitar and then all positions on the other 5 minutes later.

Thanks for the feedback! I think this is one of the few videos where I tried the "stay with one guitar" approach.

Hi Fran, glad you like the video! The signal chain is as follows: Sennheiser MD 421 U4 into an A Designs P1 (Api 500 format) Mic pre. My audio interface is the UA Apollo X6. I'm actually preparing a blog-entry on www.paulreno.de to accompany this shootout and hope to have it online sometime next week. That'll provide more in depth info on the gear I use, some photos of the Strats and what I could find on the specs.

Hi, thanks for subscribing! The Custom Shop played and felt the best with the other two not far behind. However, I'm very content with my Am Pro and think that in most use cases it' not a question of which guitar is better, but which guitar fits best. I still have the Custom Shop around since I couldn't return it due to the second lockdown and it's not like my Am Pro doesn't get any playtime anymore. Please also have a look at what I wrote below in answer to Chris Roccos inquiry. I also wrote a recent blog post accompanying this video on paulreno.de

@@PaulReno Thank you for answering, to my ears the pro sounds absolutely amazing, i think it was my favourite, perhaps i should get one, by the way you made all 3 guitars sound really high end.

@@adarde-valensa4560 Thanks, I always try my best to get a god source sounds and shootout some of the amps and pedals I have to find the best match. During Mixdown I try not to mess around to much with the sounds. Usually I add a bit of Pre Amp saturation with something like the UAD Neve emulation and occasionally I do some subtractive EQing.

Hi Chris, you’re welcome! Overall I think the Am Pro is not far behind. Even If I had all three guitars at my disposal for recording all the time there will definitely be situations where I will reach for the Am Pro. I like how the Pickups sounds, they have a nice rawness/ and growl to them on some distorted tones that I very much appreciate. If you listen to some of the stuff of Jimi Hendrix that has been released in recent years („Both Sides of the Sky“, f.e.), there are some tones in there that immediately remind me of how the Am Pro sounds. For lack of better words I would say they sound „magnetic“ :)
The JM is the one which appeals the least to me. I would probably put in different PU's that are more in line with what the CS sounds like. John Mayer himself seems to have gone that route with the PRS Silver Sky, which is designed after his 64 Strat (The Fender Signature is modeled after a SRV type Strat, I believe)
That being said, the higher output of both the JM Signature and the CS Strat do help to get a more even performance on the clean sounds. Also the distorted sounds on those two are probably closer to what most players would look for in these specific situations as in the video (without having to revert to a Humbucker-type guitar). The funny thing is, the most obvious differences are audible when the guitars are unplugged. That’s when you hear just how well balanced and even sounding the CS Strat is.
To sum it up, I don’t regret getting the Am Pro. It’s the Strat that I can afford and I do also like to mess around with pedals and amps to push sounds in certain directions, which will also help to close any gaps between this and higher priced guitars. And while it's hard do "undo" the vintage coloration of the other strats in the video, the more neutral sounding Am Pro is sometimes a good starting point for getting a tone.

Good comparison except for the abusive distortion. With headphones theres a big difference in volume and isnt a nice tone to hear imho ymmv

Hi Michael, thanks for the feedback! I usually spend a lot of time checking the overall balance to meet TH-cam's Loudness requirements. Sometimes the dynamics are part of the examples.

All 3 guitars are ok. The tuner may have suffered the most.
