I tried to adopt my nephew after my sister died but his initial foster parents wanted him so he was taken away from me by CPS. They made the excuse that it was because I was still grieving my sister but it was really to return him to their friends. It’s a broken system.😢

Such a concise, well-structured video packed with insights (loved the recap of your main points at the end, too). Thank you for putting this up.

If you want to adopt a waiting child from another state, do you still get to “foster” them for a few months beforehand?

In every case I have heard of, yes!

Hi there! I have a couple questions. When fostering to adopt, can I still foster traditionally while we are waiting to be selected for adoption or do they prefer not to do that for the sake of not disrupting the foster child(ren) stay if you do get selected for adoption? Not sure if that makes sense. I just wonder if I can still be a soft place for a foster child to land while we are waiting as I’ve heard it can be quite some time..
Also, I have a bio 3 yo and 7 yo- I’ve been reading that I should plan on fostering kids 3 and younger so as to not disrupt the existing “hierarchy” of ages. Do you find that to be true as well?
Lastly, for all of the visits that occur, do both parents have to be there? I stay at home but that means my husband is gone quite a bit during the week- always home in evenings and most weekends but they are long 12 hour days.
Thank you so much for any help!

Hi! So, I don’t think they would recommend that you foster while waiting for an adoptive placement. However, you could do respite care! That’s where kids stay in your home for a weekend or a week while their foster families take a break. It’s definitely a need! We adopted out of birth order, but it’s definitely a case by case decision. I think I made a video about that sometime over this past year. If I can find it I’ll link it for you. In most cases it should be fine if only one parent is home for the visits. They can be triggering for kids at times and some wild behaviors may come out at that time, but other than that I would imagine your caseworker would be fine with one parent there. A lot can depend on the agency you use and their policies. Hope that helps!
