for me, I could never stand the majority of the voice acting in the yugioh dub, especially the yugioh GX dub, oh god. To be fair though, the voice acting in 5d's was decent at best.
I prefer Bella Hudson's Luffy over Colleen Clinkenbeard's. Marc Diraison (Guts) was a pretty gosh darned Zoro, too.
4chan just ruined so much stuff. Removed things that didn't need to be removed like changing the name of "rice balls" (a Japanese food,) into "doughnuts" in One Piece. Even though the character is literally rowling rice up into a ball and saying "I love doughnuts" like that is CLEARLY not a Doughnut. ugh

I kinda hope Sonic X gets rebooted as a Sonic cartoon based more around the main canon as opposed to the boom continuity.
Not saying Sonic Boom is a bad show, Probably one of CN's best shows right now, But it's lack of overarching story makes it a bit harder to binge.
Sonic X on the other hand, despite 4kids destroying the Japanese creator's ideas for the show, (such as Eggman's running gag of breaking down the 4th wall with the largest bulldozer he could find.) was pretty easy to binge when I was younger, as I was exited to know just what happened next and what the cast would get up to, only amplified by the "Next time, on Sonic X" segments at the end of each episode, teasing what would happen next in the story.

If they should to make a reboot of Sonic X, I hope for "No Chris Torndyke". but if they put him again, for God's love, Don't make Chris Torndyke useless like he was during all the 1st season. Sonic X 1st season was only boring because Chris was a useless spoiled brat that spoiled the best scenes of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 adaptation.

Not only did was their version distributed to English-speaking countries, but Latin America as well. That's why LatAm doesn't have a proper One Piece dub nor uncensored YGO.
Not a fan of either of those but I heard the LatAm dubs of YGO and old Pokémon are pretty cool despite the censorship.
I'm not sure but I think anime is not censored anymore, but when it is done, it is done rarely and does not affect the plot.

it is, on tv, the only ones who arent are those from crunchroll and services a like, actualy, even those are since they are the tv version, and only the blu ray version are completely uncensored.
about the dub, 4kids didnt dub it on LatAM, here on Brasil for example, countless studios dubed the same anime, but the voices were kept across studios because dubs arent employees of an specif studio but an autonomous (or maybe micro company), so no matter what studio get the show for the seasson, the voices are kept (unless the studio chose otherwise for watever reason)

4Kids. The reason why a lot of Westerners HATE anime. They've been deceived by the extreme editing and been led to think anime is just for little kids. I, however, have seen the real thing, so I know there are some great titles out there.
I remember disliking anime back in the day due to all of the weird edits, cringey music replacements or pretty bad voice acting then. Turned me off from anime for a while, but I've gotten into more anime since 2014 so I can safely say that I agree with you 100%.
Maybe some older people, 4Kids hasn't dubbed anything popular in like 15 years so there's pretty much a whole new generation of anime fans out there now that didn't have to put up with insane censorship. Also, It's not hard to just list off some mature animes to someone if they think it's all kids stuff. That said, I do think 4Kids is part of the reason there was such a debate around sub vs dub as I don't consider most 4Kids dubs watchable. Only some stuff like Pokemon was okay which wasn't that edited.
3:13 Before this, they sued TCDigital and killed Chaotic (which could have easily been one of their most lucrative investments aside from Yugioh after losing Pokemon, classic 4kids) too. You know what they say, karma's a bitch!

I used to watch Yu-Gi-Oh and sonic X on 4 kids and then they stopped playing on Saturday's and then I was upset because I was still a kid. I don't remember the heavy censorship though whenever they showed an Original vs 4kids I remembered the Original play on 4kids

Their Pokemon dub was amazing and barely had anything censored TBH. Really glad they were able to bring it out in English but I understand why people don't like their other dubs.

for Pokémon and Sonic X, I get why they would censor but there are other shows that are meant for older audiences
luckily I watched 4kids as well a kid and didn't notice the censorship and thus never really ruined my experience with these shows. but looking back at it I was surprised on how much they censored. well maybe it was a good/bad thing they did what they did. I probably would have never been able to watch these shows because my parents use to be super strict xD

Well if they didn't censor the anime then most kids probably wouldn't watch them . So their fate was already sealed either way.
The censorship was way too much, using different OSTs instead of the originals was bad, the dialogues were too cheesy sometimes. 4Kids did not know how to bring anime to the US.
I could only imagine the Third Impact that would happen if they tried to bring over Neon Genesis Evangelion or Inuyasaha.
Not all the new theme songs were bad.i particularly like onepiece and Magical Doremi more in the 4kids version. Some of the censorshipis also quite funny, like sanji's lollipop. I much prefer it to smoking, not because smoking is bad, but because a lollipop feels more true to the weirdness of the show.
For magical Doremi I just hate all the Japanese voices. They are unnaturally high pitched and the 4kids spells are more creatice because they rhyme each spell making wach spell unique rather then just say a generic magic phrase over and over. Basically, 4kids was actually really good considering no foreign cartoon had really been brought to America before. It could have been done way way worse or never done at all. Its so sad nobody gives them any credit for what they did right.

There was VORTEXX... but that died in 2014... if I had to guess, I'd say that it's because kids these days don't wake up to watch cartoons on Saturday anymore, and when they do want to, they've got Netflix and Hulu, or they have parents who can afford channels like Disney XD. In the information age with TH-cam and memes and the ease of internet access, there's too many things fighting for control of a little kid's eyes for a Saturday morning to fight.
Yeah, sad as it is to say, Saturday mornings are a thing of the past.
I miss them as well, though. I always woke up to watch my favorite cartoons.
I guess I can kind of do that now if I wake up and watch anime on my browser.
I think it's good to note that the reason 4kids did a lot of the censoring was because they wanted their shows to be broadcasted on public access, and in order for them to do that they had to cut out anything related to extreme violence, religion, or other cultures. (The censoring of actual english words is still a strange thing though.)
Finally a good rational comment! Everyone is bashing on the censorship without considering that maybe 4kids was forced to censor in order to broadcast. Sort of like in the earlier ages of gaming history (in the west), after gory titles like mortal kombat hit the shelf, regulations surrounding rating systems and censorship were developed that only allowed publication for games that adhered to the appropriate guidelines. Maybe it's a similar case for broadcasting on television.
So while Americanizing absolutely everything seems stupid, a case could be made that 4kids was forced to censor out violence/gore according to network regulations or else they would never be allowed to air it, and we therefore would not have grew up watching pokemon/yugioh/dragonball z as kids.
I didn't really mind the censoring, until they touched stuff like one piece. The way they censored my favorite anime, to the extent that they even skipped various arcs is what pissed me off.
In various shows like sonic and pokemon, yeah the censoring makes sense. It can easily be adapted to a kids show. Even yugioh, with its slightly annoying censoring made sense since it was a card game anime. Animes and shows like these that are generally okay for kids to watch is one thing, but them censoring anime that should, by all rights, be T rated, both confused and aggravated me. And I'm not just talking about one piece here. The way they censored dbz was, half the time, more offensive than the original story. At least the few major edits that shaman king had were more confusing than offensive...
And before anybody says otherwise, i understand that they received the rights to the more mature anime (in comparison) like one piece, dbz, shaman king, etc. via a large bundle, but if they are going to adapt them, they could at least do the stories justice. Perhaps have the more mature anime less censored, but also released at a different time block, along with warnings if need be. A few slight adjustments and 70% of the complaints would never have surfaced.

The voice actor Jason Griffith who voiced sonic from sonic x and the video games is definitely the most memorable one but to be honest his voice wasn’t all that great in sonic x he tried hard to sound like the Dreamcast era voices but however in later games especially sonic unleashed he gotten better voice acting. And about sonic x sure it’s one of the most popular 4kids show at the time. But to be fair while sonic x not the worst one. I didn’t really liked it at all. Here’s why I did not like sonic x:
The stories are bland and boring and are most filler episodes(like the baseball episode or the episode we’re sonic friends were trying to get the device from sonic’s ear and they were trying to get it out.
The humans were pointless and useless and boring to say the least especially chris(which he taken over the main characters spotlight.
The majority of the voices(with the exception of Eggman) completely sucks in that show but the majority of the voices gotten better in the games.
But in season 3 however it gotten better but it’s still mediocre.
In the end sonic x could’ve been a decent sonic cartoon but thanks to 4kids butchered it, pointless filler and bland episodes, useless human characters. Sonic x was terrible it could’ve been another good one I’m sorry sonic x fans I know u loved that show bu sonic x is definitely a show u want to pass up and go see the other good sonic shows.

If they had just called them rice balls or something similar, I would have been curious but I'd at least have gotten the idea. One addition of theirs I did actually like was the concept of the Shadow Realm.

Some of them like One Piece weren't ones that they were particularly interested in dubbing or localizing, but they were contractually obligated to since they often acquired licenses through "bundles" (for lack of a better term).
IIRC, One Piece was part of a licensing deal that came with a few other Toei series.

Even then they would had ruined them, for example if they got the first Minky Momo series then a lot of things like Momo's Panty Shots and Transformations would be censored and we would not know that Momo lives with a Veterinarian. Episode 46 would had her banished to the dark world. Many Anime fans at that stage would agree that Harmony Gold treated it more fairly despite that their dub of Minky Momo had only aired in Australia and Malaysia as "The Magical World of Gigi" Would be harder for them to dub Pelsia the Magic Fairy as well because they don't want kids to know that countries other than the United States exist and Pelsia comes from Africa.
Stuff like Doraemon, Shin-chan and more old 90's anime would've fit 4K!DS perfectly.

4kids censoring was a pain in the ass but they had some really talented voice actors that played some really iconic characters such as Dan Green voicing Atem and Yugi from yugioh, Trudge from 5ds, Knuckles from Sonic X and Sky from Winx Club. Eric Stuart played Kaiba but also Brock from Pokemon. Wayne Grayson (think that's his name) voiced Joey Wheeler and also Mikey from TMNT, same voice actor that played Tristan from yugioh also played Brandon from Winx club, Yusei in 5ds and Raphael fr TMNT. Just some really talented voices and the shows had awesome theme songs, I mean what kind of trash is the new TMNT theme song?? Disney, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and most importantly Jetix...today's kids will never know how great those channels were

I'm so glad 4Kids is no longer around. They may have given us shows like _Pokemon_ , _Yu-Gi-Oh_ , and such, but their censorship laws were downright retarded (as well as unnecessary). Toning down violence and nudity is one thing, but then it's something as simple as food, words, and clothing. Would any kid really turn off the TV because they saw a rice ball on screen? Or at least mistaken it for a "jelly filled doughnut"?
_Yeah, God forbid they get exposed to cultural diversity, like any healthy society would do. It's not like American kids would actually be friends with those of Asian descent. That'd be too unrealistic._
If there's something to be learned from all of this, it's that kids deserve better quality shows. Especially shows that treat them like thinking individuals. Thankfully times have changed, and we now live in, what is considered to be, the "Golden Age of Television". There's still crap out there, but the pros do outweigh the cons.

Yu-Gi-Oh! on the other hand, is a completely different show if you watch it subbed. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX especially. Watch it subbed and I assure you, you won't even recognize it. Note that this isn't a bad thing. I personally feel that the English Dub for GX really was a kid's show while the Japanese was aimed more at the teen and adult demographic.

They mostly died after the Yu-Gi-Oh lawsuit, they won but they got no money left and they have to sell many assets. While yes they're indeed partially alive as 4K Media(A Konami division because they want everything Yu-Gi-Oh) but they only do Yu-Gi-Oh anime. Pretty much a bittersweet ending.

Eh, I don't see what the whole hubbub is. Many people from my generation probably wouldn't have gotten into anime without their shows, even if they were excessive with the censorship. I still go back and rewatch those versions fondly, albeit while laughing at the obvious censorship and modifications. I even made the elusive "jelly donuts" for a bake sale at a small anime convention once and you wouldn't believe the positive response. Even if it kind of sucked that they changed these things around to make a show for a younger audience, it was still what we were first exposed to, and honestly I'm pretty darn happy I was. Probably a good thing 4Kids isn't around today, though. I'd hate to see them try and turn certain animes into a kids show (Madoka Magika would just get slaughtered, after all).
I honestly don't see the problem, making the programs child friendly gave kids the opportunity to actually view something so different. A lot of these programs were pretty child friendly anyway.
If 4kids didn't exist they would've probably been licensed by some other company that didn't needlessly butcher the anime they handled, 4kids weren't the only ones adapting anime for kids they simply got lucky, by getting the best licenses(monopolies over anime) of the time. As you said most of these anime were pretty child friendly anyway.

I see a lot of negativity in the comments about 4Kids. Yes I understand about the obvious failings they had, but to me without them I wouldn't of had a great childhood watching some of my favorite cartoons and anime. The early 2000's were a great time to be a kid. I loved watching practically every show, Sonic X, Cubix, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, Ultimate Muscle, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (I even watched Winx Club too even though that wasn't for boys, lol). Sonic X in particular helped make me an even bigger fan of sonic games, especially sense I had owned a dreamcast with Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 at the time. I didn't even know about the censored stuff until so many years later. So I don't entirely hate them the same way the rest of the internet seems to. Anyways I just wanted to share how I felt about 4Kids.

Pretty sure that 4kids just didn't really know what "censorship" meant, or was supposed to be used for, and probably just followed some kind of chart that was pretty vague about what need to be censored, probably regardless of context.
They do know censorship rules, but TV network laws were the one made this happened to anime and ruined in America not 4Kids. 4Kids have to followed their censorship to work on Saturday morning or if it they don’t followed then no airing Japanese episodes at all.
The only good thing they ever did was the first 4 seasons of TMNT.

One being an episode contained a backstory where Hun and the Garbage man were conjoined twins that were separated at birth
ninjadude183 Don't forget the 5th season which didn't normally air. That one introduces a different Shredder and it was really damn good. The 6th season was horrible. It took place entirely in the future and there was no Shredder or any interesting villains in the whole season. Also, the animation was completely changed which I hated. It felt like an entirely different show. The last season, 7, was pretty good but not as good as 1-5. Overall I found the 2003 TMNT to be the only truly great show 4Kids ever produced. It didn't suffer from the needlessly dumbed down censorship and editing nearly as much as Pokémon and One Piece and other shows did.
I've never quite understood the hate people have for 4kids or DiC. They were just production companies who were tasked with making the shows acceptable for US consumption. They didn't really make the rules, the networks did, and in order to make any money they had to follow through with those demands. I can't be mad at them for doing their job.

Because 4Kids has a name; they're basically the face we see that represents those decisions, whether or not they were ones they wanted to make. The ones who were pulling the string are the definition of a faceless corporation, it's hard to direct vitriol at something so formless.
We *can* blame them for even bidding on the rights to some of these shows in the first place. They went for One Piece without really knowing what they'd have to do to it.
