  • I woke up this morning in Tzaneen, South Africa, to find the river below to have swelled enormously during the night. There had been an insane thunderstorm, waking me up at 4 in the morning, that came with torrential downpour. The lodge's river raft was gone and the the Tzaneen Dam was overflowing. I was planning to take a rest day and work on editing videos but it turned out to be an unexpected day of investigating the overflowing dam and locating the missing raft...

That is the cool thing about South Africa. You are now in the lush green province of Limpopo. Later you will find yourself in the great plains of the Free State on to the deserts of the Northern Cape, on to the arrid geological landscape of the Karoo and suddenly you arrive at the white beaches of Cape Town. A world in one country 🌍

It tickled me because my grandmother told a story of how the elephant got its long trunk, involving a crocodile, too much curiosity on the part of the elephant, and The Great Green Greasy Limpopo River, a name which made quite an impression on my young mind, imagining it to be a prominent feature of the African landscape.

That concrete dam looks a little worse for wear, judging by the large cracks at the top of the wall. Let's hope it holds up! The story of three successive 'contractors' absconding with the money for work not done, warms my heart as an ex South African now living in Australia. Like we say: TIA (This Is Africa). I hope Noraly takes a drone shot of the dam and surroundings.

Noraly, in the last episode when I saw the river flowing with you looking from your room and you mentioned the storm that had occurred earlier, based on the flow and condition, I had an eerie feeling that if a storm resurfaced, the bank may overflow and I was hoping you were high enough.
Great shot of the dam at Limpopo and interesting information. Wow, the floating dock did end up in "Timbuktu". The speed of the river was dangerously awesome. Cute guy on the dam.
Your landlord, his wife and their friends are very nice. It's ALL because of YOUR accepting and outgoing character. We keep telling you through all 4, now 5 seasons, you exude this wonderful aura. That's why your positive outlook supercedes you. YOU ARE ONE AMAZING PERSON!

Two sayings I have heard many times here in SA:
      1. "TIA" - meaning This is Africa and any damn thing can happen at anytime out of the blue for no apparent rhyme or reason, Usually said with a shrug after some weird event!
      2. "MMBA" - meaning Miles and Miles of Bloody Africa when someone from some crowded country says "wow look at that huge and empty landscape" - as if to imply all of Africa is just empty space - which it more or less is!

Weird! I'd known that it is based on Dutch but I'd never realized it was similar enough to German that Germans would be able to understand some of it.

So cool to watch this episode. It has a very personal touch in so many ways. I stayed at Oppie Oewer the very next week after this happening with a few Adventure riding buddies. Gerrit, the host, took us for an off road round trip to the Kruger National Park fence with a few sloshy river crossings. What a great host and a fantastic ride. I was floored when he told me that you were there the previous week. I'm like, what's the freeking chance!
I schooled in Tzaneen for the last few years of primary school. I just love the area with its prize farming, most of which gets exported - the quality is so good. Everything grows bigger and is so much juicier.
As a school border, I used to spend weekends with friends on their family farms. It is such an amazing experience to swim in the dams, ride the tractors and go hiking in the bush veldt, eating farm fresh food. There's always things to fix, to fetch, to do. The smell of bread baking - hmmm - yummy.
I spent time at the Sapekoe tea plantation with dear friends learning to drive at the tender age of 11. My mates mom would collect us at the nearby bus stop on a Friday, pillow in hand so I could see over the wheel, allowing us to meander back to the house through the estate in her little Ford Escort. Such a beautiful people, such a great area!!
I'm so looking forward to going back to Oppie Oewer in a few months to do the "23 crossings" in streams associated with the Olifants river, near the Orrie Baragwanath pass, camping in the wild.
Thanks for sharing your video - your adventures rock!

What a day for you. You've shared more than travel and scenery. There's other things that the local people have to deal with like the flooding and worries about the nearby damn integrity. The people are very good to you. Ride On
