    Seeing the panels next to each other, Busiek/Nord really blows the new one out of the water, so vibrant and dynamic!
    Not that the new stuff is bad, I rate it around the Truman/Giorello run

      The colour choices in 14 certainly come across as muted in compared to Busiek/Nord. I really like Zub's trim story but feel like the armor reveal could have felt a touch more momentous. But then Braithwaite and Rodriguez shine at other moments.

    Great review as ever. I like the extra detail you added there, showing the similarities with and nods to, the earlier Dark Horse Conan comics. Very well done, sir - this shows you're not just saying, "Look here's a comic I just got", but actual thought and context re the current issue.

      Thanks Dog Brother! Trying to keep growing and taking some different approaches. This kind of comparison makes it fun for me too...I get to learn more and think more deeply about lineage and consider continuity as I document the new issue. I love the notion of something fictional taking on a life of its own...to the point that it feels real and historical. 👍⚔️

    This was a really nice issue. I'm fully on board with the artist switch off they've developed. The numerous full pages, the character art... It's really quite nice to be able to contrast every four issues and I think the extra time is giving them more leeway to provide superior art. Because that's what we are getting in this title. The commitment shown by HeroSig and Titan and the respect given to not just the character but the people who came before is not only rare but laudable, the intent of everyone involved seems focused. It's a good time to be a fan of everyone's favourite barbarian. Good times ahead. Good review, the extra info on Busieks prior work is some nice insight.

      Absolutely agree with you about the artist swap out. Keeps things fresh for the reader, while probably keeping things fresh for the artists...I imagine it allows them more time and focus. And the commitment from Heroic Signatures must help with the job.

    I'm glad they've moved on to the heart of this story/thread. I've always felt it was a mistake for authors to write stories of Conan as an adolescent. And another mistake to write stories set in Cimmeria or which include other Cimmerians. Great review as always SD!

    • @StygianDogs
      @StygianDogs  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks GB! I think Zub's done a good job with this and I'm definitely interested to see where it goes in the next few issues. I hear you about the younger Conan/Cimmeria themes, though there are some great stories from the Busiek era that has convinced me that it can be done well. (And there are other stories from the Dark Horse era where Conan returns to Cimmeria that are...um...not my favourites!) That said, I enjoy the idea that Conan is singular, an almost lone representative of that mysterious 'race' of men. Take it easy Dog Brother!

    That panel where Conan and the Aesir trudge through the snowstorm shadowed by Atali, beautiful work by Braithwaite and Rodriguez.
    I haven't read the Dark Horse version but did read the Marvel and Robin Recht French comic versions. Recht was the first to tell the story from Atali's pov and it will be interesting to contrast it to Zub and team's retelling.

    I've really love this whole series, but these past two prequelish issues have been so very fun. I just finished this issue the other day and had a blast with it.
    One of the first times I chose a variant cover buying this issue, my comic shop had all the variants for once which I thought was exciting.
    I very much liked how you compared stuff and explained the credit Kurt had in the issue. Very cool stuff. I would have never caught something like that, even though I've read that Dark Horse stuff.
    I like the idea of rumors haha. It's all stories after all. Every time I read Conan, especially retellings, I just see it as a different person telling the same story. Of course there will be changes.

    I haven't read #14 yet, but I did read #13. The way Conan was presented was really out of character. I really don't ever see Conan experiencing any sort of existential crisis over the existence of Crom. Being a barbarian, superstition comes more naturally to him than skepticism. Moreover, Conan’s views on gods, religion, existence, and his purpose in life are made plain in Queen of the Black Coast chapter 2. Issue #13’s exposition of Conan’s inner-monologue are in complete contradiction to what REH wrote. Conan takes the existence of gods and the supernatural for granted. If anything, he would have taken his peoples’ victory at Venarium as proof of receiving Crom’s favor. Victory would have been all the evidence he needed and he would not have expected some sort of supernatural light show. Intellectual skepticism, agnosticism, and atheism as we know it today would not have existed in ancient Cimmeria. Life was a constant struggle to survive. People simply did not have time to waste on debating abstract notions of existence. True, there were Nemedian skeptics, but these were philosophers completely unknown to Cimmerians and to Conan at that time and Conan never seemed to buy into their skepticism after encountering them. Issue #13 really felt like it was projecting modern existential angst onto Conan, which is just out of place and character. And the phrase “Crom’s children” seems to impose modern Western Christian conceptions of God onto Crom, which is especially inaccurate. Crom is far from a loving god who sees Cimmerians as his children. Rather, he despises weaklings and sends his devils to bedevil those who would call on him. Cimmerians would probably be happier if they did not believe in him and instead picked Mitra or even Set as their chief deity. Again, read Queen of the Black Coast chapter 2 for Conan’s views on these matters. Another #13 nitpick is Conan killing a wolf pack and then a bear with a sword. I know he is tough, but that is pushing it. Doesn’t he ever worry about rabies or infections? And to be clear, I have purchased all Conan and SSoC books thus far and am overall a fan of Titan Comics Conan and am extremely grateful of the work they are doing. This post should be taken as constructive criticism.
