  • We're back in the shop with shipwright Louis Sauzedde as he laminates 8' white oak pieces together with West System epoxy to make the stem for a 24' wooden v-bottom skiff that Lou designed.
    This video is produced by Fish Hawk Films and brought to you by Jamestown Distributors - bit.ly/1ewFz6g

    I am so excited for this new series about the v bottom skiff. Somehow this video found its way into my feed. 6 years ago... now that’s proper prior planning. I’m glad it’s all coming together now.

    Thank you for publishing this video, my boat has laminated oak structures with resorcinol glue (built in 1986), and now I can visualize the construction process.

    Cool way to make strong curved pieces without a steamer.

    I know this is an older video so this comment may not get seen or addressed. But i am VERY interested in the making of that small model boat Lou is holding @ 3:50
    Any chance at getting a video one day showing how those small model boats are made i would LOVE to make some of those!

    I have learned so much from your videos, keep up the good work. What is the process used to trim the stem after it has cured? Is it sent through a planer? Thanks

    What is the advantage of glueing wood together if you can maybe but it out of 3 or 4 pieces max and glue them then together? Just curious

      The laminated stem will be far stronger in the end than a stem made from solid timbers butted together.

    I had heard and then proven true that oak has an acidity to it which makes laminating with epoxy resin a mistake. I laminated cabin roof beams which began delaminating in two years, had to remove all and replace. Resorcinol is the adhesive to use with white oak. Further, it's best to steam bend oak and laminate as a last resort. Can't beat a solid piece of oak versus laminated oak for strength and longevity. Soon I will be steam bending an oak stem which is 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" x 7 ft for a 53 ft boat, have to put a 12 inch bend in it because that's how the original piece was made.

    why not create the stew with a bent solid branch

    • @hotrodhog2170
      @hotrodhog2170 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      solid branch is not near as strong as a laminated piece.

      please explain..

    • @hotrodhog2170
      @hotrodhog2170 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      explain what? Laminated timbers have much more strength than solid wood. It is common knowledge. Google it.

      I think Mr. Hotrod Hog has offered more knowledge here than he has at his disposal. Certainly a laminated piece can be every bit as strong as a solid piece of wood, maybe stronger, depending on the specific pieces of wood involved. But to say "solid is NOT NEAR \as strong as laminated" is an over-statement. Particularly as it applies here. Since, as they say about a chain, the end result will be limited by the weakest part anyway, whether it's glue or wood.
      I'm pretty sure that if he had had a naturally grown, bent piece of suitable wood to use, Louis would've chosen that in a heartbeat.
      Now steam bent, vs laminated, I personally don't know. There may be a generally accepted ranking of those two options, but I would guess them to be pretty nearly equal in performance, with the choice being usually dictated by ease or convenience of achieving. If one were clearly the superior choice, we'd probably ALWAYS see that one picked over the other.

    I've heard that oak and epoxy doesn't work well together?

    • @scottsouder6450
      @scottsouder6450 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      White Oak has had some people claim bad results but you will find as many people that say it works fine with no problems. I epoxied a white oak skeg onto a boat and never had a single issue for over two years. I sold it so I can't claim anything past two years. The skeg is a high wear piece and I think a problem would have shown if it was going to do so.
