Forging A Knife From Cold Steel Knives!

  • A 3-layer construction technique (name?) is used to forge a knife from COLD STEEL knives. Multiple 1080 steel knives are welded into a billet which is sandwiched between two other billets made from 1055 cold steel blades. We got angle grinding, forging, tack welding, a canister, handle making and wieners. This video has it all! Wait, you want to see the knife chop through a boot with meat in it? Hmmm...
To the manufacturer's credit this knife steel took a nice edge.
DO NOT PUT COATED METAL INTO A FORGE THE FUMES MAY BE DANGEROUS. I took special precautions here including a special respirator filter, extra ventilation and moving myself 40-50 ft away outdoors momentarily but this still could have gone badly.

That's so much sandpaper grit. Even if you seperate it out in a magnetic slurry process most of it is probably going to oxidize in the forge since the particles are so small and of large surface area

I have literally chiseled rust off of a steel deck with a cold steel pocket knife and then went and did fine slicing work with it afterwards with no trouble. If you can't find a use for their knives it's probably because you've never tried.

    • @michaelhguy
      @michaelhguy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Cold Steel knives are actually pretty good. I have a couple cheaper ones, and they hold up really well. I had a buddy who actually skinned a deer with a $15 one with only the initial sharpening.

If you know the difference between a knife and a machete, and how to use either one of them effecively, you want a hard use tool and not pocket jewelry, and you haven't swallowed the anti Lynn Thompson Kool Aid...they're great knives for the money you pay for them.
Its like a MORA...Can you split a 6 inch hardwood log with one...No....but DAMN is that one useful little knife for the money you're putting out.
I've never met a CS hater who actually went somewhere, picked their own CS Knife of choice out by hand, used it, and still said....you know what ?? I STILL hate CS.
GO GET a CS SRK in high carbon and use it. Get one in the old Carbon V made by Sharon Steel and Camillus in the 80s and 90s. If that SOB doesn't become you're go to 6 inch belt user knife...I'll buy it from you myself. I have one thats over 25 years old and still going.

@@Jtzkb All I can say there is...EVERY production knife company has had those issues, or they WILL have them at some point or another.
Spyderco just had it out with EBay over selling fake PM2s in packaging that looks so good you would have to work for them to spot it. BUCK, CASE and several US makers have had quality declines, then they figured it out and straightened up.
Where the fall through major occurs with most of them is overseas copies and downright fakes...made wherever, but mostly China. So people buy them off the net thinking they're getting the real thing and they aren't. This hurts the company they're faking and the customer who buys the product, and guess who gets the horrible reviews on the net...overnight?
Thats why I order from a reputable seller or I go there physically and hand pick them out. Cold Steel has a LARGE variety of obvious fakes as well as some that take a REALLY TRAINED EYE TO PICK OUT...photographed and listed on their website.
Again...are they perfect? No. Not by a long shot.
But I still have and use the first CS Knife that was bought for me in 1987, a Carbon V SRK with a Gray parkerized finish. Got a Trailmaster that I've beat the dog crap out of, sent back to have it rehandle and factory sharpened that was made in the 1980s.

Can I Forge A Knife From Cold Steel Knives That Will Cut Through A Boot With Meat In It?! Well, Sorta...
Don't put coated metal in a forge, it's dangerous.
This knife steel took a nice edge believe it or not.
What's with the grain difference at the very edge of the knife at the beginning? Case hardening, differential hardening, I don't know.

Around 5 years ago I went to Alaska. I bought some land and decided to try out some cold steel Kukri choppers. They came pretty dull and only beveled on one side of blade. In less than 1 hour I had both kukri with sharp with even beveled blades. Used just files that I use to make my bows. I cut down many trees with those blades, could cut down a 18 to 25 inch tree in less than 20 minutes and only need sharpening every couple days if it hit dirt or rocks. Happened when I was cutting back roots systems. It was a really soft blade. But held up surprisingly well. I could use both blades together like a steel and it would sharpen real fast.
