My goal as a beginner is to just get a harvest from at least one of my few plants of each vegetable. So just a few cucumbers and tomatoes and at least one watermelon 😅 just some of something I'll be happy for my year 1 gardening in Florida. I got the fabric pots ❤️ I was going to do container gardening but I'm thinking a raised bed because I have climbing stuff
I always have a blast hanging out with my buddy Petrina 🥰 It was fun to put one of our many chats on camera 😊 And I’m excited to get to visit your garden
This video is so great. I wish I knew about you ladies 6 years ago when I started gardening in Florida. I got so discouraged trying to do gardening as I did in the north. Nothing grew, thankfully I found out about gardening classes at the Extension and that helped tremendously. Never give up keep trying different things and experimenting!
I love experimenting. Sometimes things will work in one yard and not another. I was shocked I got brussels sprouts to grow this year. Pleasant surprise!
All good information for beginners. Also, if you are a beginner, start small. That way, you don't become overwhelmed and give up. You can always add more beds, crops, etc, later on. In addition, the experience and confidence that you gain from your first, small efforts will aid you as you expand your garden.
I agree. Do one fence pickets bed 6x3x12 put a couple tomatoes, pole beans and pepper starts (I don't recommend using seeds for peppers in the beginning they are super fickle). Put in some cheap bamboo cane's to support your pole beans and voila a garden.
Walmart came out with their own line of starts this year. I went to get some zinnias and found yellow squash, tomatoes and peppers. Only like 2 varieties of tomatoes..best boy and celebrity but they are only $1.99 each (squash is a 4 pack for 3.48). Spending $3-6 for each start isn't really cost effective for the beginner. I mean it took me a couple years to really have success. I killed a whole lot of plants before I got it down. The BEST place to get starts is FB marketplace. Their is always gardeners who over planted and have starts for sale usually $1 or so but you can usually work a deal 12 for $10 or whatever. You also get a better selection there than at your local nursery. Even if I have my starts growing well I will sometimes grab a larger plant older than mine...I spent like $14 on one at Walmart that had 10 tomato's on it when I bought it and it has consistently given me tomatoes ..and it's past my 6 ft trellis. Best $14 I've spent on " starters".
Picking my first Barbados cherry was such a memorable day. Every harvest of anything home grown is so exciting. Going from fabric bags to raised beds this year. Putting them in this week🤞 and letting stuff break down to feed the new babies.
OMG! Too much adorableness!!! The new Wild Floridian Leggy Lettuce Dance. You two are like twins of the heart, coordinated outfits, finishing each other's sentences, and stuff that only friends of long standing do. One additional tip for beginners: shop around for advice on easy beginner plants, BUT choose the top 3 that your family would like to eat. Such a let down when you grow a lush crop of some exotic veggie, and everyone gives you that "I would like to spit this out as soon as your attention is diverted" LOL
Love you both! I am blind and Florida native. Finally decided to have my own garden and orchard, because getting to the store is so challenging. I've learned so much from you both. All my trees are still in pots. Been trying to figure out the best place, and then i can place my raised beds.
Thanks to you & The Wild Floridian I now have a successful garden. I use the fabric raised beds in my very small backyard. I started small last year. The everglades tomatoes gave me such a confidence boost. I've expanded my vegetable garden now. Still harvesting my kale & broccoli. I bought one of each plant to see how much room they need & how they will grow. Next year I'm planting more, Thank you both, so much, for all the information & confidence you have given me.
I moved from IL a couple years ago, I started with 2 six packs of peppers...jalapeños and banana peppers in fabric bags. They did so well! I added 24 more bags and some barrels this year...added tomatoes. I plan to focus on 1 ish type of veg each year and get comfortable. I have learned so much from you! I am going to start watching Home Grown FL next!
It made me so happy to see you two together. My go to Floridians Gardner ❤. I made the mistake of starting out big for my first garden. I started out with like 6 plants from seed, and I was only able to harvest from 2 plants. Everything else didn't survive. Another beginning tip: make sure you're planting during the right time of year. For my first garden, I planted cilantro during spring. It didn't like our heat.
Radishes and green beans were my nemesis. Oddly I have found growing tomatoes and peppers from seed not too difficult. The most important thing I have observed is plants grown from seeds are far superior to transplants from the big box stores.
That happens to me too especially this time of year. Try to pick it super early and then soak in cold water for 30 mins. That usually takes the bitterness out. 💚
Leaf lettuce is the easiest. Can grow it 1-2 gallon pots. I have not had bug issues with them. You can cut as you need and they continue to grow. And here it doesn’t need a lot of sun. I have mine on the shade.
I do that same. My lettuce is in a bed with only 3 hours of sun a day and the rest shade. They are still going strong but with these hot temperatures, it won’t be long before they bolt.
I have lived in Manatee County Florida for 8 years and I have never tried to gardent before. I want to start with the front of my house to make it pretty. I am not sure how to even begin. What type of soil should I look for? Since we are now going into June what types of flowers or small plants should I start with?
Are you looking to do vegetable gardens or ornamental and flowers? I have a monthly video that I put out that shows what to grow for vegetables if you want to check that out. If you are looking for flowers and or ornamentals, I strongly encourage getting Florida native plants. They grow super easy with minimal maintenance. Check out fnps.org. They are a great place to start.
Well I should be starting seeds but taking a break right now :) About radishes we LOVED radishes but now that we are in our 60s HA Don't like to eat them :( BUT they are ONE of the BEST companions to cole crops EVER. so grow them . The oldest child got me a new computer for Mothers day . I have been watching BOTH of your videos for a long time but not been able to comment because I watched your videos on the TV not a computer.
i love the food forest
It’s beautiful 💚
Everglade Tomatoes soon as you get a red one you can use their seeds to grow more you never have to buy them again they are like a weed they just grow
Haha. They really are. I have some popping up all over the place.
WOW KNOXVILLE , TENNESSEE !!!
Great advice. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!

Those are all great suggestions. I didn’t realize Walmart started making their own seedlings
❤❤❤
Where can we get the best nutrient rich soil for our raised garden beds, here in Florida???
I really like Whitwam Organics bulk soil. They are near Tampa.
Love you both! Thank you!
Our pleasure! 💚👩🌾💚

I know exactly how you feel. I love announcing everything I grew when feeding my family 🤣

🤣🤣🤣 I’ve been there. Nothing worse. Jacqueline and I have so much in common that it’s hard not to become fast friends.
So very true!

You are so sweet. Thank you. Trees love lots of sun so I plant mine on the west side of my property

This makes my heart so happy 🥰. This is exactly why I started my channel. To show folks it can be done. I’m so happy for you. Great job Linda!

You are absolutely right. Starting small is the way to go and planting according to Florida “seasons”. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video!
Hvala zaista. Nista nismo postigle, samo sam te namucila ,ali još jednom HVALA❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
I’m sorry. Are the subtitles not working for you?
Radishes and green beans were my nemesis. Oddly I have found growing tomatoes and peppers from seed not too difficult. The most important thing I have observed is plants grown from seeds are far superior to transplants from the big box stores.
They do seem more heathy for sure!
I am also growing red and green romaine lettuce, they are 4 to 6 inches tall, but taste bitter, any helpful ideas? They have not bolted.
That happens to me too especially this time of year. Try to pick it super early and then soak in cold water for 30 mins. That usually takes the bitterness out. 💚
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I will try that, thank you!
Yeah, harvest in the early morning! Definitely makes a difference.
Walmart bags cheap and work well
My favorite gardeners❤ Thank you for all the great info!

OMG, I would love ANY info about how that tomato trellis was built. I want to build that for my wife.
This was awesome video seeing the collab. Great info, but I think we needed a segment for Wild Floridian's garden puppy
Awww! Yeah Ms. Shiloh was having a romp.
Haha Her pups are so cute!
