What I love about this story so much is how much peoples opinions on it differ. Nobody knows if what he did was right or wrong because we weren't living his life and yet everyone develops such strong emotions and opinion towards it. Whether you love it or hate it the story has made you feel strong emotions and that's whats most amazing about it.

It was incredibly unwise so be as unprepared as he was, but you never know what was really going on inside of him. It may have been his way to manifest and fight his demons. Implying that you are more qualified to judge his decisions based on a movie and perhaps a few minutes of additional research than he himself is beyond arrogant, though.

Regardless of how you feel about this, you have to admit it has a powerful message. I first learned of the movie after telling my therapist I dont need one single person in my life. She told me to watch this movie. I too grew up sort of like Chris and I watched my parents have knock down drag outs, it really does a number on a small child's mind to witness that. It changes you and affects you deeply. This story moved me for so many reasons. We all want happiness in our lives, some more than others, and I've come to believe it truly isnt real unless it's shared. We weren't put on this earth to live alone, we are here to love one another.

Really appreciate this. I saw this film when it came out over a decade ago and it had a real impact on me. Its through this film that I was introduced to Thoreau, Emmerson and Jack London. However, I tried to rewatch it a few weeks ago and found it far too pretentious and unrealistic to enjoy in the way I did ten years ago. I was pretty unhappy with myself for feeling this way about a beautiful film which was once so important to me. It goes to show how insidious the process of drowning out individualism and rebellion within society really is. I never noticed my views changing. This video captures the essence of the film in a way that bypasses the condescending response I have unfortunately developed towards people like Christopher.

he rebelled like many post college grads. I went to Europe for 6 months living on no money. McCandless however didn't live or treat his family they way he preached to others. I'm sure if he didn't die that he would of been in the rat race with everyone else trying to do the best you can. Having a family and responsibilities towards your children makes your own personal life of less consequences. Your kids come first and did Chris ever stop to think that his parents perhaps tried the best they could and failed in his eyes because they are not perfect. I read this book because my son read it for HS so it was laying on the table so I read it. My son had the same takeaway. The bullshit about his hunting illegally and I'm sure he took from others when in need is never brought up.

I do think that raising a family himself may have helped Christopher to reconcile the poor relationship he had with his own parents or, at the least, it may have affected his empathy towards them. Like you, I also think there is a fair chance Christopher would have ended up in the “rat race” like the rest of us who have serious responsibilities and/or dependants. Despite this, I still believe there is an argument to justify his decision to “leave society behind”, even at such a cost to himself and his family. That argument would be straight from the mind of Thoreau - “Let your life be a counter-friction to stop the machine. What I have to do is to see, at any rate, that I do not lend myself to the wrong which I condemn”.

People criticize Chris for what he did, saying it was selfish, childish and arrogant, and use as an argument his death, saying that it was all for nothing cause he died and didnt adjust to social norms and expectations. What about all the people who made it? There's so many stories out there, just like Chris's, the only difference is that they did make it, had their happy ending.

Because he was selfish, childish and arrogant. Some people that leave society behind have nothing to lose, and some, if not most of them at least have better reasons for it than he did.. His story is good when you romanticise it like in this movie. It can be absolutely beautiful if it works, but if you look past the art, it was a pretentious idealistic kid, who left his family on bad terms with no contact, was unprepared for the life he chose, and tragically died as a consequence. You shouldn't envy him, you should learn from his story. Try to have a better relationship with your family, and revere mother nature, are at least my two takeaways from it.

If my own mom and dad didn't take care of me, I wouldn't call them mom and dad. Turkish writer Nihan Kaya has a saying, "If you are not going to teach your child to swim, do not give birth."

They wanted the best for him and tried in their own way, but they just couldn't see what kind of support Chris actually needed. They just had their own idea of who Chris should be. That's in my opinion what bothered Chris, and he couldn't see that his parents cared for him through the pressures of expectation. He could have talked to them, showed them and tried to make them see what he was actually passionate about, but instead he played his part well and then disappeared without saying a word. They didn't get a chanse to realize they were doing something wrong before they had already lost him.
Sure, there are family relationships that aren't salvageable and things that you can't forgive, but in this case I don't think their problems were too deep to be reconciled. In the end, both parties must have wished that they had.

After going on a 10day expedition into the Alaskan wild for a sheep. I can surely say Chris mccandless was a madman. The book talks about how Everyman wants to know his true strength, we as men want to be guarded for our toughness, a tale as old of time. We obsess over being the best at something, finding out niche in the world. Chris escaped the world and all its expectations, he lived selfishly amongst the destitute and became a wild man, with the finale of his trip in Alaska though he discovered, living as a wild man won’t last you a lifetime. Happiness is better shared. And unfortunately he couldn’t make it out to tell the story.

Among the pool of opinions, dropping my opinion in this movie ( may not matter, even though). Seems like I am the only one who applauded for his decision to live life at his own terms. I truly admire him on choosing the path where his heart took him without confirming to societal norms. Everyone has to pay price for every choices they make, be it having a social life or life of wilderness. One has to pay price for their survival, so it's very fine, I would like to pay a price to follow my heart than to live in the pool of thoughts "what if I followed my heart". At deathbed, his smile shows it was worth the million tears he shed during his last moments of life, he knew the cost he was paying but he also knew he did what his heart ask him to do. All the comments I read was full about him being unprepared about life. Nobody can be prepared for life, noone. Life and death, I have always firmly believed, it's destined. I have seen people who died very young without any disease or anything, just very bizarrely. When your time is up, your preparation fails. If you are proud of yourself, happy about how you lived your life and no regrets at all in brink of death, that's a success and I believe Chris achieved that. ❤️💌

Too much of anything can be fatal. He ran away because society was asking too much of him and irony is that he writes “happiness is real only when its shared”. He wanted to explore and be a free wild bird but died of starvation and plant poisoning alone in the middle of nowhere because it was too much wilderness even for him.

This film will get cult status the photography is stunning and the storyline plucks at the heartstrings - A film to share with someone special. “When you forgive, you love. And when you love, God’s light shines upon you.”

I believe this story to be nothing but a really good soundtrack. That parents raised a child to adulthood and spend a small fortune to send him to college only to have that college leach out every bit of common sense from a person and replace it with nonsense...this boy died because of what he learned at college. A romantic fool but mostly just a fool. The world is a better place with less fools.

Oh, it's a mystery to me
We have a greed, with which we have agreed
And you think you have to want more than you need
Until you have it all you won't be free
      Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
When you want more than you have
      You think you need
And when you think more than you want
      Your thoughts begin to bleed
I think I need to find a bigger place
'Cause when you have more than you think
      You need more space
      Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
      Society, crazy indeed
I hope you're not lonely without me
There's those thinking, more or less, less is more
But if less is more, how you keeping score?
Means for every point you make, your level drops
Kinda like you're starting from the top
      You can't do that
      Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
      Society, crazy indeed
I hope you're not lonely without me
      Society, have mercy on me
I hope you're not angry if I disagree
      Society, crazy indeed
      I hope you're not lonely
      Without me

He may have gone about in a wrong way like I think he should of kept in touch with people and not relied so much on himself. However he was right about society, it has become all about the money and things, I am guilty of it myself, buying stuff and still wanting more stuff. This way of life makes you feel more alone as for me if I have any problems I feel society does not give a shit as all it cares about is money and stuff and that feeling of money being put over your life is a lonely and sad one. If we cared more for others then money the world would be better, I think we should have gone down that route, not as many things being made. I would rather have less things but the feeling that society cared.
