Saw this concert 6 times in '85 (and my friend and I got onstage during "Baby I'm a Star" for the last one we went to in Long Beach). Everybody who wishes they could've been there has it right because it was special beyond words.
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😱☺️😊😎😉👌😁 Prince had 50,000 purple roses in a net at the top of the ceiling & at a certain point when he hit a certain note or pedal on the the stage that controls his guitar sounds it would drop the Rose's down to the crowd & someone in the crowd threw a purple rose back at him on stage😱😱😱😱😎😉👌😁
This tour was the one I got to see him and he was booked for six nights in a row at the Cow Palace in South San Francisco(tickets:$17.50) and i believe it was the last night and it was packed(12,000 seat capacity) a friend had bought me a ticket...Amazing! His energy was nonstop! I miss his presence in the music industry, but obviously he could not stay here with the physical pain he must've been living with for years. He would jump off a speaker at least 6 feet off the ground , in platform shoes, landing in the splits! FOR YEARS...that guitar is wailing, like painfully. Crazy. Purple tears. Sheila E was with him on that tour and she was amazing...The Glamorous Life...Live.
Yes !!!!! Prince is all that !!!! He is something that this world has never seen or experienced.........and as phenomenal as he was on vinyl, he bought the house down with his live performances....once u attend a Prince concert, you will never ever be the same, for you will experience something so rare, so wonderful that u feel such a rush of love and gratitude that u find yourself thanking God and sweet baby Jesus, for being alive in this moment, 4 being in the right place at the right time.....the first time I went to a Prince concert was in "1982 thru "2011" for a total of 8 concerts but it feels like it may have been 9, but it's all good, because I got to witness the brilliance of Prince. You definitely got your money's worth and then some because Prince Rogers Nelson came to slay! So happy to accompany you, Just Jammin on this journey of discovering the artistry of "His Royal Badness!!!!
I saw Prince perform in 2011, he was 52 at the time (but looked no older than 38) and he was still performing his ASS OFF like he had something to prove! That's what blew me away the most. This man had proved how great he was decades before and was still putting on incredible performances that went on for 3 hours +! Incredible!
I stood in line 7 hours to get tickets to the Purple Rain Tour in 1984. Best concert I've ever been to. He performed for over 2 hours straight. Definitely one of the GREATS!!!
The studio version was already good, but Prince is like "nah I can make it 20 minutes long and do it better". I just can't believe he would do this at every single concert on the Purple Rain tour, and knowing him no two versions of this song were exactly the same.
It’s not technically a studio version. The last 3 songs of the Purple Rain album, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I’m a Star and Purple Rain were recorded live at First Avenue for the Album. The strings for Purple Rain were added later
never ever heard much more pashion to the blues that time and i am was 16 that time , Rip.. jam with the Angels youre the greatest Musician who I ever fall in Love to ...
This album was a work of Art. I met my husband just before this album released and he played it in a loop 24/7. He’s been deceased several years. This was a nice trip down memory lane. It’s hard to believe how time flies.
I saw this concert when he came to Houston in 85 & he gave his all. Never have I seen a better performance KNOWING HE WAS ALL IN. God bless you in paradise!!!💯🙏🏿❤️🔥
This is Music History , the most Free Creator of Music in all Time ... a real Bluesman of the '80 like The Mozart in His Time of Living .... Rip , Love Your Music to the End of my Life
Most ppl don't know Prince hated this tour and began 2 hate the song Purple Rain because he said it was an Albatros hanging around his neck and it kept ppl from appreciating his musicianship. Many concerts after this he wouldn't perform it. In Hindsight he was right because ppl call him the Purple Rain singer as if his career stopped in 84. Those who don't request his newer music do him a great disservice because he has such an amazing catalog
He was a true honest artist. Always on the move forward I saw him many times live. And his late-night/early-morning aftershows was always so good, interesting and alive. There he could play music and have fun. Not be a superstar that only plays the same old hits. But jam as a musician. That's what he wanted most of all And you could feel he enjoyed it so much, even though he'd been playing and working all day and it was 3 AM Musical hunger and passion
Hi JJ......this is the most awesome version! - thanks for reacting.....his guitar solo is out of this world! - I wish more would react to this particular performance. Thanks.
He was saying “ he said everything is gonna be alright” when you couldn’t make out what he was saying. He of course was talking about God. This whole concert was included in the deluxe rerelease of Purple Rain a couple yrs ago. I’m sure it’s here on TH-cam as well. It’s definitely worth checking out! It’s called Live from Syracuse
Really glad you enjoyed it. Lemme just tell the ppl how much of a stand up guy you are tho. I sent this request and forgot to send the link to the video. So I sent another payment for a request just to send the link to the video. I had no problem with that because I have felt honored to be a part of your journey. Then I wake up the next day and see that you sent the other payment back without prompting. That's just good person stuff, man. I appreciate it. You're getting that money back one way or another tho. All love and respect. Proud of how far you've come, man.
The lyric you missed was, “He said it’s gonna to be alright, he said it’s gonna be alright”. Hey you know what’s funny, a lot of people didn’t know how good Prince was on guitar until they saw him perform While My Guitar Gently Weeps… they obviously had not seen this concert!
Love the tee...the Hohner he was playing in the beginning is a classic guitar as well (and my fave). I remember when this concert came out on VHS...wore it out! A friend transferred it to DVD for me, but I still have that old VHS. Also, he was saying "He (The Lord) said it's gone be alright...He said it's gone be alright." Loving your Prince journey.
I haven't watched your vid yet, BUT this was the first concert I ever went to. I was 14, a week before my 15th birthday and I saw it in Syracuse NY, 3/30/85. You better give Prince props. Not only judging him on this tour but also his guitar solo, playing with others, 'while my guitar gently weeps' by George Harrison. He stole that show with his incredible solo. Prince was one of the few true musicians of his time. He controlled every aspect of his albums, down to playing the instruments. His amazing music was all due to him. 100! I love MJ and others from the 80s, but Prince was the best. What hurts the most is I was a teen in the 80s. I drank, whatever teens do. Prince didn't, no drugs, no alcohol, he was firm. but as the years went by with his dancing, his hips went out he started pain meds to get through his shows and that's what killed him. Those fucking pain meds. The world lost an AMAZING and supremely talented musician that day. All because of those opiates. That's funny, just started watching and I hear you say Syracuse, totally wrong, but that's ok. that's my first ever concert. You got it mostly right, but the cu in Syracuse has a q sound so like syraquse.
I was 4 years old when "purple rain" came out, i recall at some point the impact it had on my family to name a few my aunts, uncles and parents alike Shalom to those who were there but also to those who understood maybe even later in life.😊
Hey my man, wish u could have seen him live...I seen him from the 1999 tour on..every show was a spiritual experience...oh and the finest females was always there lol
Awe man, this is one concert that I regret missing. I remember when it came out on VHS, I didn’t even own a VCR but I would rent it from the video store over and over again and watch it at my friends house. He thought I was crazy for watching it as often as I did. I have to say on another note, the original VHS version looked so much better than the digitized version and in my opinion sounded better, apparently it didn’t transfer to digital media very well.
I was at this tour back in 85'. I was blown away at the age of 16. I saw him perform 3 times. The last was for the rainbow children album. It was a concert hall that held a couple thousand people. On another level.
I got to see Prince twice and both times were incredible. The first time I saw him walk onstage I was only about 10 ft away from him and lemme tell you, I'm a grown man but I couldn't breathe when he stepped in front of me. The energy coming off him, u could feel it. He put on such a show and I must have looked like I was really enjoying myself, he tossed me his guitar pick. I've had it for 27 years 😎🎶
It's really unfortunate that someone who likes him so much never got to see him live. For the artist you like, try to see them when you can. You never know what will happen. I learned that lesson from when I missed Nina Simone. One of my biggest musical regrets was deciding to go to Montreal instead of seeing her show when she started touring the US again. She died soon after and I never got a chance!!!
One of his best live performances of Purple Rain, interesting that Bobby Z said he was over the PR tour and was bored. He was already working on 2 other projects. But he always gave his purple family their money's worth in concert regardless! Since you never got a chance to see him live maybe one day you can visit Paisley Park.
This live show (at Syracuse, NY) was officialy released on VHS tape in the 80'. It's absolutely fabulous from the first minute till the last. As far as I'm concerned the best one. Should be released in DVD. Is insanely intense and good!
June 3rd 2022 they released the newly remastered Blu-ray from the original master tapes from the vault. Absolutely breathtaking, stunning and mesmerizing!!! A most own for any fan of Prince or great music. An iconic performance by an iconic legendary maestro!
I remember when the album came out my favorite on the album was the beautiful ones and I would die 4 u prince was the first to do text message now that I think about it
There is an extended original version of the recording of this, it's called " The Making Of Purple Rain " & is damn good this version is like 20 minutes long
Ok - for bookends....check out his live performance of this song - the 1985 American Music Awards. Of the two - that one is my fav, because you could see the emotions on his face, singing this song.. Back in the day - the Grammys - or was this the Oscars y'all? Anyway - they gave artists a lot of leeway - which is why Prince did what he wanted to do for this performance...(which was everything)
What makes prince stand apart from those other artists is this; not to many people have a purple rain in their cannon.. meaning, spanning all generations, races, genres, etc.
You have to see the last concert the last time Prince & The Revolution performance where Prince broke 3 of those white cloud guitars when they did " Purple Rain " you'll really appreciate & enjoy it & I'd luv to see ya react to it 😱😱😱😱👌😉😎

I've seen Purple Rain over 500 times. I didn't tell him that when i worked with him at Paisley Park as a adult. I knew he would give me that " r u nuts " side eye. peace, blessings and #STAYWILD
Lil dope fun fact about Purple Rain. Most of the vocals were lifted from the first performance of the song. He had just wrote it and performed it a few days later and most of it is what we still listen to today. This is a vid of that performance. Might be a nice watch on your own time th-cam.com/video/frbVVDAyJ1w/w-d-xo.html

Did you notice that he switched guitars?
The first guitar that Prince played here was a cheap mail order number which he liked so much that he continued playing it until his dying day.
