    Quick note: As of version 1.4 of Terraria, the 'softcore' character difficulty was renamed to 'classic,' so for the purposes of this video you can consider those two terms to be interchangeable.

    Fighting the goblin army on medium core was probably the first time I felt like I was actually in a battle against them. Whenever you die, you have to plow through enemies with nothing but your copper tools in order to get them back. Then, once you do get your items, you don't have time to organize your inventory, so you just have to the best weapon you have in your hot bar. It gives you a sort of "I didn't hear no bell" type feeling whenever you respawn and makes it feel more rewarding when you finally drive them back.

    • @TheGemsbok
      @TheGemsbok  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Very well said! That's exactly the kind of immersion and emergent gameplay mediumcore can provide.

    Alright, sold. It definitely seems like a good middleground basically between invincibility and permadeath, so I will give it a shot. I've been putting off playing Terraria for a long time already though, so I'll probably wait until the last update gets added this year before I play it.

    • @TheGemsbok

    Whenever I tried doing Hardcore characters I would usually die either right away, at the wall of flesh, or soon after defeating the wall of flesh.

    • @TheGemsbok
      @TheGemsbok  4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Same! The very beginning of hardmode, right after wall of flesh, is a massive spike in difficulty that doesn't really give you time to do proper resource-gathering before it throws huge damage numbers at you. Just a single hardmode goblin raid catching you on the surface shortly after wall of flesh can make it practically impossible to survive. It's a really tough moment in the game, even on mediumcore.
      Actually, my most desired change in the last big update would be a smoother difficulty curve where different resources and monsters enter the world in smaller batches as more bosses are killed---but that kind of alteration really doesn't seem likely based on the pre-release info they've shared so far.

    Terraria mediumcore is 2D minecraft

  • @jamesteavery0
    @jamesteavery0 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Great video. I think you might have missed some of what makes hardcore mode possible though. your world does not get destroyed when you die, so you can pick up a new character and take that 'second best set of gear' and continue on your way, much like mediumcore, but where a gravestone is literally a dead character in a line of characters on the way to victory. The problem with this however is that worlds only have so many heart containers and items, and this amount of loss on each death is extremely painful. I've played 933 hours of terraria, mainly on softcore with friends but I may give it another go on mediumcore solo.

    • @TheGemsbok
      @TheGemsbok  4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That's a really excellent point; it is definitely possible to adapt hardcore into a process that is only somewhat more difficult and more lengthy than mediumcore.
      But the necessary loss of your best gear with each death, the necessity to create a brand new character, and the necessary loss of all spent health and mana upgrades still make that adaptation a lot more cumbersome than mediumcore---even if the world's resources hold out far into the campaign (which, as you pointed out, isn't always the case).
      Also, I can't shake the feeling that doing things that way heavily diminishes the impressiveness of beating the game on hardcore, in a category where achieving a widely-known difficult task (in this case, going from start to finish in the game with a new character in a new world) would be the primary driving force.
      At any rate, thank you for a great comment!

  • @internisus
    @internisus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Outstanding video. It’s like you perfectly unpacked and articulated my every thought and feeling on this subject. I love your emphasis on the psychology of the player’s experience. Mediumcore leads you not only to play cautiously but also to make use of the enormous variety of items that you might otherwise ignore as soon as they cease to be your very best to form plans and contingencies-go bags and outposts designed to facilitate those ‘rescue runs’ when disaster inevitably strikes. I completely agree that mediumcore is the ideal difficulty for the RPG-minded player to really get the most out of the game.

    • @TheGemsbok
      @TheGemsbok  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whoa, triple, huh? That's pretty crazy. I've definitely considered getting into mods from time to time, but just never have. In particular, the big overhaul mods for titles like Terraria, FTL, and Portal 2 have piqued my interest since those base games are so excellent.

    • @hellbr3ad807
      @hellbr3ad807 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGemsbok Yes, these are truly great games even without any mods. I think that's what makes modders so determined to step up and do their best to make them even greater. Vanilla Terraria has tons of stuff to do, but when you complete it on every mode a few times it can get a bit repetitive. Here mods like Calamity, Thorium, Spirit etc shine. Each of them could make their own smaller versions of the game and add hundreds of items, enemies and tens of bosses. + the modding process itself is really simple as it only involves downloading TModLoader from Steam and selecting mods of your choice in-game.

    • @Auvisome
      @Auvisome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I think you fundamentally misunderstand the challenge the game presents in Softcore. Dying in and of itself is monotonous. It means that you have to restart a boss, make it back to where you last died, or survive not getting spawn killed in an event. The consequence of losing is not progressing, which is the ultimate goal-as well as time. And sure, that can be said about medium core, and having to redo past progress and/or recollect your items-however the disparity in magnitude places far more relevance and balance to the former, as it correlates to the immediate challenge at hand. A death means you just gotta try again.
      You're not any better of a player by doing mediumcore, you're just more patient. You're still dying to the same thing and have to beat it nonetheless. Softcore players just get to do that sooner, which is why the vast majority play it that way. Cause if you're dying, your progress is still getting stalled. It's just that dying in mediumcore stalls your progress to the point where you lose it-and in a game about overcoming bosses, it's just artificial padding and difficulty. It doesn’t fundamentally change your approach. A good player will still be a good player.

    The 2nd hand items that you should have in store when u die in mediumcore:
    - 2nd hand weapons that are on parr with your main weapons
    - 2nd hand armor
    - grappling hook, any kind
    - a double jump accessory
    - fall damage negating accessories if u have one.
    - building blocks *when u find your corpse and try to sort your inventory after death quickly box yourself in, just make sure there arent any wall piercing/noclipping enemies nearby to mess u up*
    For minecraft players... You already know how this works.
    *Edit:* for those who are new, dont worry items in terraria dont really despawn like in minecraft, just make sure you dont "save and exit" on your world bc it will despawn all items on the ground.

    Currently playing Mediumcore Mastermode and it is a slow, meticulous, but also very engaging experience. I have never put this much effort and thought into the buildings and infrastructure of my Terraria world, as well as optimizing most buff opportunities through potions, prop buffs, etc.
    I will however say, wish the game didn't despawn your items if something happens while playing - fx. putting all your items in a Gravestone container maybe - and this level of stress is sometimes a bit too much, feeling like you're forced to keep playing when something like this happens. But still, pretty fun.

    Randomly stumbled upon this video while trying to fuss out details for my own terraria playthrough, I was actually ready to dismiss your statements on mediumcore, mainly because I hate losing my stuff in minecraft, but then after hearing your opinions on the matter, I have to say, I was wrong entirely. In a way, the lack of any meaningful punishment for if I die during a boss fight left me to view buff potions as completely worthless, despite my experience to the contrary. I think for me, I play terraria because of its RPG like feel, and the punishment for death on "classic" just doesn't have enough bite, and your point about the underworld is a perfectly valid one. I think I will do my next major playthrough of terraria on mediumcore Master Mode. Yes, I will die a lot, and lose my stuff a lot, but this should hopefully get me out of my bad habits of not planning ahead of time for things like post wall of flesh, which is how a mobile playthrough died (not enough space for all the new loot), AND a xbox 360 run died to plantera (no wings + no buffs) ...

    In minecraft, hardcore deletes your world on death.
    In terraria, it doesn't.
    This means your recovery is now far worse because you have to make another character and have plenty of heart crystals and life fruits on standby. Granted you could just make a new world and restock that way but it depends on what you want. Even if you do restock... you still have to reach the point of what you need to restock on.
    In a way it's cheating, but in another way... it's part of the game.
    (no i have not done hardcore yet. i did try master out on a server though. im just going through all modes in a sort of progression. all that increases is the game difficulty, character difficulty, and world size. with journey unlocked after beating the game in hardcore master on a large world.)

    huge bump! the reason I burned out on this game repeatedly was because the tension ran out after a certain point. the only way to stay entertained was to basically turn the game into a boss rush, neglecting most of the other mechanics in the process, and at that point the way gear starts rapidly becoming obsolete made everything feel rightfully pointless to do. but this difficulty gives you a reason to hold on to old gear, and poses a serious inconvenience if you don't take your time.

      Because death is absolutely designed to be part of Terraria, and losing all your items on death is very, VERY punishing, and for a lot of people, *frustrating*. Mediumcore and Hardcore were never integral to the game, they were afterthoughts that were added in - which is fine - but to recommend mediumcore to anyone who isn't already familiar with the game just seems like a quick way to turn newcomers off.

    Holy cow this video's good. Before this I just saw mediumcore as a mode the devs put in that they really didn't give much thought. Now though? You brought up good arguments for playing this mode, and I may give it a shot after my calamity mod expert mode softcore playthrough. The one problem I still have with it is that it points you in 1 specific path. What I mean by this is that there will always be a "best" way to do a task or fight a boss that will always be better than trying your own thing. In softcore, there are no reprecussions for trying weird, wacky strats, which incentivizes exploration and experimentation. In mediumcore, you're much more inclined to fall back onto that "safe technique" since the risk is higher. However, i'd say that this mode is perfect for challenge runs, where you try to beat the game with certain self imposed goals and restrictions, since that tension you talked about makes it so you can't, in your words, just throw bodies at the problem. Instead, in that case, it gives some proper meaning behind the challenge aspect. 11/10 video, real eye-opener!

    • @TheGemsbok
      @TheGemsbok  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for a very kind and thorough comment! I've very glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I see what you're saying about optimization vs. experimentation, and it's definitely true that you try to play the most 'optimal' way in mediumcore, which might possibly be more enjoyable for a new player than one who already knows the game inside and out. In that sense, I could definitely understand someone using softcore as a kind of sandbox mode---not just for construction, but for combat as well.

And a rule that I am only allowed to save and exit only when on the spawn point (center) or a bed with set spawn point. So far I'm still pre-hard mode and Skeletron is difficult. ^^ PS: I'm *so* fú***ìng scared of the Underworld. PPS: And most importantly I need to keep the count of loose/thrown items in the world below 200, otherwise they do will start to despawn. Luckily e.g. 200 dirt blocks count as 1 item when they are exactly on the same place. Check the Terraria wiki.

    My only problem with medium-core is the slim chance of permanently losing your items. This doesnt matter for most pre-hardmode weapons, but take something like the nights edge. You require the murmasa, a sword only found in the skeletal dungeon, to craft it. But if you choose to go this route of swords, and lose your items permanently enough times. It will eventually become impossible to craft that sword. The fact that Terraria is a finite world makes me much less comfortable about doing medium-core.

    • @Avery-ww5nu
      @Avery-ww5nu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In addition, theres also the insane amount of work needed to get back your items if they are permanently lost or despawn. Especially if your recovery runs fail enough times. For me it would just turn into too much work. I dont want to spend an hour mining all the ores to reclaim my stuff.

    • @TheGemsbok
      @TheGemsbok  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is true that there is always some risk of permanently losing items, but the odds of this happening diminish more and more as you get further into the campaign---as the quality of your sets of back-up equipment for recovery runs get better and better.

    While I respect the premises upon which you base your argument for mediumcore, I find the aspects that the mode adds to be for more monotonous than intense. Perhaps it's just my personal experience playing almost exclusively on expert and now master mode and having zero interest in ever starting up a normal world, but the joy and intensity I derive from playing terraria lies in conquering the world and it's bosses in increasingly difficult battles. The only real difference between classic and mediumcore at that point is the amount of time you waste retrieving your gear whenever you die, because there's never any real risk of true loss.

    • @TheGemsbok
      @TheGemsbok  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're just different ways of adding difficulty. Expert and master increase the immediate difficulty of obstacles in the world, whereas mediumcore and hardcore increase the penalty for failure. Both forms cause the player to need to play and/or prepare better; the former leans more toward skillful combat and optimal equipment, and the latter more toward cautious preparation and decisionmaking. Both are valid options (although I wouldn't necessarily consider them highly compatible with each other, especially for newer players).

    You give me expert mode, I pick it.

    recovery runs are a mixed bag. they're fun and intresting for the first few times. but after that they're just annoying. their is no head cannon to me getting my drops from a faild boss for the 100th time. especially if it's something like the wall of flesh. leading to the pause, save & quit method. if you think/know you're about to die you just hit escape go to settings and hit "save and quit". then load back in and BOOM you're back at base safe and sound. the method is so good that theirs no reason not to use it even on classic/softcore. why suicide and lose money when you can just go back for free?
    this is all coming from someone who's only ever played mediumcore up until a few days ago btw. got something like 200+ hours on mediumcore so i'm no stranger to it. Just at a certain point it's dumb. A lot of the posatives you listed just go away and more negatives start to pile up. Losing my gear due to a game crash or power outage is not satisfying, enjoyable, or challenging. it's just misery. which i don't think is your point.
    ....though thinking about it it might be mine. actually that might be the only reason to play mediumcore at this point.

    Is it just me who use recall potion instead of suicide in softcore?

    Does softcore effect the drops from bosses? Because I beat Skeltron n it dropped only gold

      Expert and Master mode affect boss drops, but as far as I know character difficulty has no such effect.

    not gonna lie, you got a point... in pre hardmode or on normal, in expert and even more so master hardmode is unfair for mediumcore players, if someone enjoyed dying in 2 hits even in the best armour then well... good for them but there is a reson why all the long term terraria players that played the game multiple times to the end play on classic, its less anoying, the bosses are a challange enough and if someone thinks they're not... calamity... and no going through the map 5 times for the stuff you dropped in some cave

    I think if I'm honest, I just bought a laptop so I could Terraria in bed. Looking to do this. What size map? First run kind of...

      I'd recommend a 'small' map for a first-time mediumcore playthrough. I think you'll find it plenty large, and recovery runs in bigger worlds can get a bit ridiculous at times.

      @@TheGemsbok it's going to be my first time running the game. I've done about 10 hours across a couple of maps to see what it's like.
      I want the challenge of mediumcore as I started on that. Will take you up on the small map suggestion I think.

      I think you're in for a very fun time! I encourage you to embrace the roleplaying aspect of the game as much possible---really pays psychological dividends when facing mediumcore's harsh penalty for death.

    I personally think that mediumcore and hardcore are both stupid; yes, stupid! Because, on mediumcore/hardcore, the game becomes almost unbeatable. I mean, armor from ores is nearly impossible to obtain. Softcore is the best. NOTHING can change my mind. And if you think otherwise, you are legitimate stupid. Because that would also make you almost cry when you died, even on mediumcore, because of your hard-earned zenith, cell phone, and ankh shield all being gone, and also the fact that you dropped them in an area that you forgot how to reach afterwards. On softcore, you still care and avoid death the best you can, there is nothing different about that. And extra punishment is a no-no. So there, solid proof that softcore is the BEST difficulty.

    Dying in hell in this mode over a lava lake has to be one of the most terrible feelings, along with giving up all hope of getting your items back and then saving and quitting
