    when you added part A to B its the hardener so even though un mixed it was setting off that's why you had a crust at the top which was pushed to the bottom to mix the rest. next time setup your part B in one container then part A in another and dont combine both parts till ready to mix and pour.. its just a simple error where you put the resin and hardener together and left it to sit.

    Amazing work guys! Thanks so much for your continued partnership and love of our products as well. We appreciate you! As a side note, we are big TotalBoat users, it's just bad luck (or... Trey...) that the epoxy didnt get mixed right, but I can tell you first hand that the TotalBoat products are great and the team over there are stellar!

  • @TotalBoat

    Oh no! For deeper mixes and pours, you will want to go with our ThickSet Epoxy or ThickSet Fathom Epoxy. Too much of the High Performance Epoxy was poured at once and left to sit too long which caused it to over heat and smoke. We recommend mixing smaller batches at a time and pouring the High Performance no more than 1/4" at a time. The rest look great and we can't wait to check out more of your epoxy projects. Feel free to reach out with questions about the different resins and their uses!!

      Thank you for the response guys! Watching the video back, we had the ThickSet sitting right there next to the High Performance. I just chose the wrong one to use. Thank you for explaining what we did wrong! We look forward to making more videos with the Thickset! Thanks for everything guys!

    When doing projects that involve epoxy resin I suggest you work with one mixed batch at a time. Measure Part A and part B, mix the two parts together and pour before you start another batch. That way you don't let time pass and let the unmixed parts sit in the container. That will almost always cause issues like with your Total Boat batch. Following your channel all the way from South Africa and enjoy your projects. All the best at the market.

    The resin for total boat you used is for a laminating resin. It should be mixed immediately and used as soon as possible to avoid what happened in small batches.
    What you had was a runaway exothermic reaction. With resin, it not only generates heat as it cures, but it also cures faster as it gets hotter (something you'll notice in winter when it cures slower and summer when it cures faster). Deep pour resins have a slightly different chemical makeup that makes it cure extremely slowly (24 hours to a week) while laminating resins can cure within an hour to aid in its intended use, laminating.
    You mixed a large batch of laminating resin (not advised) then set it to the side (very not advised). because resin generates heat as it cures and there was such a large amount of it, the resin generated heat as it does when it cures, which made the whole batch hotter, which made it cure faster, which made it hotter, which made it cure faster, which made it hotter, which made it...........
    Tadaaaaaaaa! Runaway exothermic reaction 😐 Welcome to the club, everyone who has used resin has had a runaway reaction at one time or another 😝 Deep pour resin avoids this by curing slower so it generates less heat which reduces the chances of an exothermic reaction, thats why it can be poured +2" thick. Laminating resins are meant to be poured 1/16 -1/8" thick MAX.
    EDIT: Just saw you guys figured it out down the line 😁

    Awesome projects.. can't wait to see how they turned out. I wouldn't worry too much better the mishap. We all run into problems like that.. ive had the smoking resin, I've also put to much of one and not enough of the other... it happens. 1 tip I will share when doing projects with resin, you want to take a brush and do a lite coat on the side or top of the piece of wood before you put the rest of the resin in helps with bubbles and helps if the wood has a hole or soaks up the resin

    You had a exothermic reaction. You're lucky that cup didn't catch on fire. You needed to mix as you poured in part B as a good rule of thumb. Also you need to pick up a good set of weather gauges. Mainly thermometer & humidity gauges. 2 part epoxy is very sensitive to both. Pick a chart that's out there. Also DO NOT use the same cup for multiple batch pours. Older epoxy starting to flash off being mixed with new epoxy will go exothermic in a heartbeat! Next time you have a cup go off on you, throw it in a big bucket of water as soon as possible. N don't breath the fumes! Very nasty! We don't wanna loose the leggings! Lol

    The other thing it was heating up because there's a chemical reaction just tossing in a 5 gallon pail of water it would have neutralized it

    Are the measuring container a use once and toss out or can they be cleaned and reused

    • @TripleLRusticDesigns
      @TripleLRusticDesigns  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We tip them upside down and after the epoxy hardens, it can be peeled right out and the bucket can be reused

    Mixed hot. Shouldn’t have sat like that. The ratio is likely for something immediate. It’s really common in aircraft work for that to happen with a hot mix ratio. Not an epoxy issue

    • @eagleassets
      @eagleassets 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is the wrong kind of epoxy. It isn't a hot mix it is a chemical reaction that causes the heat if you stir it up it stops the reaction but she let it sit too long between stirs.

    You just need to cut out some of the video that are repeats and do the whole video including removing from molds. I won't search out that video as it should be in this video.

      @@levinef Fred the point I was making was the torch wouldn't matter the top was on the inside. as for seeing through I would say No they used a solid dark color. you didn't notice she did a slow pour to keep bubbles down on the inside and bottom of the mold (the front)
