Very fun and entertaining video! I love to see the different ways people find to use these great drum machines. And it was nice to see my little MIDI interface get installed in the real world. Cheers!
Dude I honestly can’t tell you enough how much I love you and what you do. No other TH-camr, heck, no other person in my life is as inspiring as you are.
Man if I ever make a trip to the UK, it's gonna be planned around a visit to this museum. It is just insanely badass what you've put together over there.
We had one of these back when they were new and recorded a bunch of songs with them. So inspiring to see what is now possible with what would otherwise be very limited, drab old gear.
You modded a classic machine, but I give you props for keeping the aesthetic modifying it in a way that looks like it could have been originally built that way
Funny thing is, I have the Oberheim DXa from one year later and it comes with factory midi. Although you took that a lot further you wonderful nutter. :)
@@annother3350 I have Drumtraks. Seems to work fine over midi tining-wise. Although the omni nature of the inputs is a little weird as is clocking it, but it works. Oberheim is a doddle by comparison on the midi front. Stick a cable in and that's it.

Absolutely PERFECT timing! I'm in the process of making my own midi input from a keyboard matrix with pretty much zero knowledge and this is VERY usable. Thank you! :D
Very nice mod. Very usable as well. This video reminded me SOOOOooo much of when I used to play the Buchla synthesizer. We called it the 'Buchla beat' sound. While the beats were kicking, we would be plugging in plugs everywhere and 'see what we got'!! Great stuff. By the way, this was in early 70's !!!! When I was in college. Good job!
Dude I just go a new eprom for my sequential six trak and I was being kinda scared about swapping it out being my first time, but the lack of caution you use on this board inspires me to try again hahahah thanks
A friend just loaned one to me and the sound is so fantastic. I have several sample sets from it I've acquired over the years, but there is something special about having the real thing. The one I have needs some repairs (why I'm watching this vid years later, hoping for some insights as to what's up), but it's still awesome.
4:58, I wouldn't press on old boards like that. You can crack a solder or a trace. Things become weird and brittle with age. When I have to re-seat an eprom on my pinball machine boards, I make sure the back is braced. Just an idea. Cheers!
Aye mate, nobody in their right mind would judge you for modifying your Drummachine. Its not like a ton of people did it back in the days, hard-modding their Synths, Drummachines etc with new EPROMs, Voltagemods etc. There was no "You cant modify our product we sold you" issue back then like you have today with (f)Apple and the likes. Its great to see someone taking their toys serious and upgrading them to their needs. It helps preserving the tool, as you wouldnt really use it if you wouldnt adapt it because it wouldnt be able to serve its purpose then
My first module: MIDI to CV. Now, hmm... this is gonna rock! Now that I can go from MIDI to CV, maybe a module to go from CV to MIDI?! Maybe you could be the ECO-modular planeteer, and bump all of our CV lines’ power consumptions down to a fraction. Instead of 1 volt per Octave where we can’t hardly introduce our modern micro controllers since they aren’t safe with any voltages more than 5 volts, much less say an FPGA that only works with less than 1.8 volts, well, how about a new CV scheme, say 10 millivolts per Octave?! I’m telling you with our horrendous power consumption, synthesists are gonna be thought of as glutinous power wasters, unless we get on this one and now! Quick before we all drown! There’s no time to waste! Thanks for sharing, as usual I am very inspired!
When you drilled the side panel through for the MIDI inserts... I felt it, I actually fucking felt it. However there is no gain without out pain n I think it was worth it man ! Awesome !!!
You're batshit crazy, but the good kind of batshit crazy Moving the tuning knobs to the top is nice, but adding CV controls on top of it is super useful and seems so simple ! Looks like you're going to have fun with this. I love the Snare > Enveloppe > Crash tuning setup, sounds crazy.
Good job Sammy! That was your best video in a long time. Very entertaining. Please stick with the workshopey videos, I really appreciate the skills I gave gained in just watching you. Six months ago I could just barely solder, now I have finished the Big Button sequencer, I am just after finishing the wav trigger with FTDI USB control and MIDI in.
omg!!!! This is exactly the explanation i needed to help construct my modular synth project!! ! ! ! Midimuso is the answer to my problems!! !aa aa a AA A A
It's your gear do what you want with it, if it was the last one on the Planet fair enough but c'mon, nothing better than bringing old gear to be usable in modern setups, it is now what it should have been....Can only applaud that. :)
I think Tom Oberheim would be proud of you. In fact, you could just ask him. You can find his email address on his website. I think what you did was totally in the spirit of what Tom and his mates did back then. Really enjoyed it.
I have an Obie DX myself. Sold off a bunch of vintage gear recently but that was one of the few I couldn't part with. Funny you mention that about the pads not triggering at first. Mine did the same but as you said, just keep tapping them harder and they seem to come back. Never have done the midi upgrade on my DX but I need to sequencing it with my Digitakt or OP-Z could get pretty mad.
You can probably modify those 555's further by taking out the cap that's next to them, taking wires out underneath your pots, and putting in a switch that switches between two different caps for a sort of fast/slow range.
I remember the time around late '80s - early '90s, everybody was wearing these jackets, here in Greece...The trend begun in Thessaloniki, later went to Athens... The black was the "classic" one, the blue was the kinda trendy, "serious" style, the army green was for the kinda "wild" metalheads, punk, and the like, and the red, (or better bordeau, as we called them..), was for the "oldschool" , who loved motorcycles, italo-disco-funk guys... Thessaloniki 1987-1992, nice times...
Time traveling Mr Roland is now my favourite synth character.
I just wish he suggested they added more bits to midi 😂
:)
Nice

You can hear so many tunes from the mid 80's popping out from the randomness of those beats.
Ahh yes, my favorite hip hop crew of the 80's: Rev Run and Darryl McXaniels. Truly pioneers of the scene.

That one use to belong to me before i sold it earlier this year my tech did tonnes of work to it. Glad you have made good use out of it.
It was very kind of you, Sam, to give us advance warning about the drilling. I only needed 2cc of novocaine.
Wow, you really nailed the history part on MIDI! Great storytelling!
I only cried a little bit when you drilled the holes in the front panel
Adding those inputs took an interesting machine and made it like million times more interesting. Nice work!
You are literally a mad scientist. This is inspiring me to go out and get a toy piano to take apart and learn!
Hope to hear more from "Street Pete" soon. He's so much more on top than that Jennie Block girl. Cheers from across the pond!
What I want to know is how does his rock collection compare?

Hello from Stuttgart! Thanks for an amazing gig two weeks ago!
I love the wood sides, and your job off course.
Soldering directly on the chip pins .... you are a brave man .
Legend has it that Street Pete was a true and certified block monster out there.
Mods are not sacrilege as long as you do it right. I'd rather have your finished machine than a stock machine.
I am SO SO SO SO Envious!!!!
DX & DMX are by far my favourite drum machines.
Good shit. Great sounds. Street Pete had me laughing.
It’s awful when your knob falls off
that was an actual conversation between Mr. Roland and Mr. Oberheim .. word to word..
I think that is the first time I've heard a byte referred to as a "litt'l nugget of voltage" before and I love it and I'm stealing it
I’ve been drooling over these and other oberheims my self. Awesome vid on something amazing
The best dramatization of the birth of MIDI ever, lol!
Shakespearian ! :-)
Absolutely PERFECT timing!

That is the sickest DX. Love that timer chip mod.
