    • @KnightRanger38
      @KnightRanger38 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually that only works for Terrestrial planets. Mercury's distance from Earth varies from about .62 to 1.38 AU (Average distance between Earth and the Sun). Venus is between .28 and 1.72 AU. Mars varies between .52 and 2.52AU. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are the fifth through eighth planets respectively in terms of distance from the Earth - an order that doesn't change even if they are the only planet on the same side of the Sun or not.

      @@TheSkytherModjust because something is animated doesn’t make it intended, or appropriate for, children. Full metal alchemist, full metal alchemist: brotherhood and, the several “movies” featuring the title character and his brother are definitely NOT for children. Basically the story is that the two brother’s mother died. They then sought to use “alchemy” (magic) to bring her back to life. In the lore of the show, an “alchemist” can use “alchemy” to create things, from flames to a radio, to a tank and more. However, you need all of the atomic components of the object first. The most basic rule of alchemy is “the law of equivalent exchange”. There is no free ride. So you exchange your pile of atoms for a working gizmo, plus some of your own energy. So they get together all of the components of a human body and attempt the alchemy. Alfonse ends up losing his entire body. Edward then uses alchemy to tie Alfonse’ soul to a suit of armor, giving up an arm and a leg to do so.
      A big price to pay surely, but a small price to being your mother back to life right?
      Except what they actually got was their mother’s body inhabited by the personification of one of the seven deadly sins. In this case, Lust. The show follows their adventures to find “the philosopher’s stone”. A powerful artifact they can use to trade for Alfonse’ body.
      They find the Stone, but find out that it can only be made by murdering thousands of people, preferably painfully.
      Does that sound like a “kid’s show”?

    Planet 1 was the first to solidify General Relativity. It is fascinating that this mission revisits that. If General Relativity is correct we will know with even greater certainty. If it is incomplete this mission may crack open the door that leads to new physics.
    Understanding more about how, why and when a planet develops a magnetosphere is foundational brickwork for the generations who will go to other planets.

    I can guarantee Simon has no idea what that “Edward Elric to alfonze” reference is from.
    But with all this hard metal from mega projects and alchemy from decoding the unknown, maybe just maybe he’ll become a full metal alchemist… or a soul in a suit of armour after Danny gets out of the basement

      That's a pretty odd assumption considering Brotherhood is the (overall) highest rated anime of all time. Doubly so if you consider that Simon has a history of hosting series like "top tens" and "the science of science fiction". As an Astrophysicist, I love when you cover cool space missions.
    Have you considered a video on the recent DART mission? (Double asteroid redirection test)
    The very first planetary defence test - One of those missions that really illustrates how we're gradually becoming the type of civilisation we've become familiar with in various works of science fiction.
    Something I learned from a colleague who's part of the DART team is that the momentum of the small probe itself is not responsible for the bulk of the change in momentum necessary for sufficient redirection of the asteroid.
    Instead, the probe is designed such that when it impacts the asteroid's surface, the impact creates a large 'splash-back' of material (similar to how dropping a stone in water can create a large splash). The mass and velocity of this material carries a net momentum which is significantly larger than the momentum the probe itself brought to the system - this is the change in momentum that ultimately alters the trajectory/orbit of the bulk of the asteroid.
    The more material that gets 'splashed' back from the impact, the larger the net change in momentum, and the more effectively we can alter the object's trajectory.
    One of the key learnings we'll take from this test is how large a 'splash' can an impact like this make? There's a NASA briefing coming this Tuesday 1th October with an update on our findings from the mission.

    This is so cool! Once again I just have so much fun with space scripts from Simon and team - and this one not just for the genuine excitement about the mission but also all the snark towards Imperial measurement. I also laughed MUCH harder than I should've at "cold enough to make a Canadian cry."
    Another neat thing! This craft will arrive just in time for my birthday in that year. How nice of ESA and JAXA to give me such a pleasant surprise!

    On the heating/cooling system: "Described like that, it sounds simple" It ... kinda is? That's exactly how an air conditioner works, just looked at from the other end. (A/C takes the heat from inside and dumps it outside, this takes the heat from outside and brings it in, it's like taking a window A/C and turning it around). I mean, the plumbing of the condenser is probably more complicated, but you have that same system in your car, and also your house if you live in a place where it gets hot.

    5:27 weirdly this is not where the metaphor breaks down. In some velodrome disciplines one can use a technique called the sling: teammates handing off momentum from one to another. This is literally how a gravity assist works.

      Or, indeed, cycling down a hill.

      Downhill bike. That's pure gravity assist.

    • @iowafarmboy
      @iowafarmboy ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MurraySteel3.14 ya, but just cycling downhill doesn't fully explain it. When you enter and leave the gravity well of a planet, you're cycling downhill and then equally uphill. Having a net 0 in delta speed (ignoring friction, of course).
      With a gravity assist, the way the probe goes through the gravity well, means that the planet and probe exchange some momentum. Meaning big delta speed change for the probe, and a very tiny amount of delta speed change for the planet.

    • @thekeytoairpower
      @thekeytoairpower ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MurraySteel3.14 not really. A gravity assist is like riding down a hill that is moving in the same direction as you. You have the acceleration of gravity in the local frame of reference (you and the hill) and a pickup of momentum in the solar frame of reference (the hill moving).
      A gravity assist does not give you extra speed because you are falling towards the planet. It is because the planet has momentum around the sun and you steal a tiny bit of it.

      Yes but the delta V requirements would be insanely high. The specific impulse of an ion engine is high because the energy accelerating the reaction mass isn’t being generated by the reaction mass itself. But it does still require a reaction mass and that much delta V would require too much reaction mass.

    Whats interesting is if in the future people were able to adapt to the gravity on mars, they could move to mercury as the gravity is pretty much the same.
    Although they would probably have to live in the craters at the poles

  • @davidhenry5128
    @davidhenry5128 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love this mission, but there 2 things here that I think need clarification, first the dificaulty in geting to mercury has to do with orbital mechanics, the problem being that to get the probe to mercury it is leaving from earth, which has a far higher orbital velocity around the sun. The best way to explain this is in terms of delta V.
    Perhaps consider explaining delta V to your audience.
    The other point is that electric or ion propulsion is highly efficient for fuel economy but give a very power output.

      I don't seem to be able to edit my post, but I meant a very low power (as in thrust) output.
