Beautiful voice. I can’t imagine her sounding any better with any other mic. I’ve been using the AKG C1000 on and off for about 10 years. I originally bought it because I wanted a good sounding condenser mic for live performances and our p.a. did not have phantom power. I come to love this mike and fall back on it quite often.

I also appreciate the lower cost equipment and what Oren demonstrated in the 2 vids I saw here today. It was a little frustrating as a new player/recorder to go to a music store a couple weeks ago, ask about mics, and be shown a $700 "starter" mic by the salesman.
WOW, what a great sound, and recording. I have 3 of these mics and glad to see you have the right idea of using a foam sock instead of some pop filter. That is precisely how I like to use them for vocals. Are you using the little presence booster which they usually come with? Sometimes that works good but not always. I have also removed the inner foam sock and find the sound much better, but of course I then use the external foam sock.

Wow nice. Just today I pulled out my AKG C1000S which I bought in the 1990s but has been in storage! On stage the feedback was bad so I retired it. I recorded a song today, and it sounded just like it did 20 years ago. Mackie mixer PROFX6V3 connected by USB to my laptop running Audacity. Just thought I'd let people know how long the mic will be around!

To my ears, it sounds like this mic has a pretty strong proximity effect. At times her vocals seem to get lost in that added low frequency. But then again, I've never heard her before so I don't have a good comparison.
Thanks, Thierry! I used the audio interface's built-in preamps. I haven't tried the Rode m3 but it looks like a solid mic and I like their products, all in all.
@@orengilad Thank you so much. I used a Sennheiser MD 441 U with a Steinberg UR12, but the output was so low that it created sooo much noise. So I want to change to a more sensitive microphone, that's why I found your video. I also want to replace the interface as the pre-amp because it doensn't have much boost. do you think the UR44 has more power in the pre-amp? and do you have a lot of noise with the UR44 and this microphone?
People often bash the AKG C1000, but they might lack a bit of skill to use it properly. It's able to get great result when placed with some thought and used with the right instruments also.

Hi Ottoman, the guitar tracks are a combo of the direct signal (inside pickup) and the AKG C1000s. Both recorded using my old M-Audio FireWire 410 and it's built-in preamp :)
Did she have much sibilance? There are vocalists that pronounce so well that barely any processing is needed, other times even 18 notch filters can't fix anything. I guess it also comes down to the right microphone for the right vocal.
Tali doesn't have much, but I've worked with otherwise great singers who did. It's important to catch it as early as possible, so that you can also adjust the mic's position before/during the session.
I might have compressed the hell out of that guitar, so it could be it xD But I don't recall any hiss issues with this mic, and I've worked with it quite a lot.
Hey Roger, I combined 2 sources: The C1000s from 20-30cm away and the direct signal from the guitar's internal mic. Balanced between them, panned sideways and voilà :)

@@orengilad I don't know how the mkII and mkIII sounds, but the mkIV doesn't sound bad. Allegedly the difference is only that the mkIV no longer needs a 9V battery but two 1.5V AA alkaline batteries, the capsule is said to be the same.
Does the mic sound like that or did you apply any pitch corrector, reverb or effect? Because if it sounds like that without adding anything its an incredibly good mic!

@@orengilad people often try to add unnessary processing or adjust something with their new toy without getting the mics in the right place. I remember an handing over a recording for a charity CD and watched in horror the guy set up all kinds of frequency based compressors on the track as he was hearing the song for the first time. Hadn't gotten to the end of the song without having to monkey with something that didn't need 'fixed". Brought out all kinds of stuff I didn't want highlighted in the mix. People can be so annoying.
I've done many vocal sessions with it and found that it catches some unwanted, sibilant noises. You could also sing further from the mic or off-axis, but I wanted to keep some proximity effect.
@@orengilad that is very interesting. do you also put windscreen on large condensers? so youre saying it tackles or tames the harsh frequencies in your opinion. and once you use windscreen, you dont use pop filter simultaneously?
@@ottomanmuzic5744 The windscreen and the pop-filter are interchangeable. I wouldn't use both at the same time. Sometimes I'd record entirely without and work off-axis, but I just love the proximity effect too much. I find it that if a singer has harsh sibilants, it's more a matter of mic positioning and later de-essing.

I m here fo mic video, but I found really good voice and very good recording. Great job, actually as it's supposed to be according to 90s. Tragically you can't find easily quality music production on digital streamings today, of course it depends on what you like. But producers spent a lot of big money billion dollars... and sadly In some expensive products result is just garbage... Respectively breaking point is arranger, sound engineer, compose and vocalist, so this sound engineer did amazing job. of course getting good voice depends on vocal. Honestly akg c1000s performance is amazingly great here, but may be it doesn't work on all female and male vocal types because all vocalist has different color range. Anyway, amazing job.!

Since this was supposed to demo the mic, the vocals needed to be clear. I could only make out about 1 in 5 words she was singing. I don't know if the fault lies in her lack of enunciation or the mic's clarity, or both.

What pre for guitars/ vocals? Is that mono guitar tracking?
Hi Ottoman, the guitar tracks are a combo of the direct signal (inside pickup) and the AKG C1000s. Both recorded using my old M-Audio FireWire 410 and it's built-in preamp :)

Did she have much sibilance? There are vocalists that pronounce so well that barely any processing is needed, other times even 18 notch filters can't fix anything. I guess it also comes down to the right microphone for the right vocal.
Tali doesn't have much, but I've worked with otherwise great singers who did. It's important to catch it as early as possible, so that you can also adjust the mic's position before/during the session.

I might have compressed the hell out of that guitar, so it could be it xD But I don't recall any hiss issues with this mic, and I've worked with it quite a lot.

Hey Roger, I combined 2 sources: The C1000s from 20-30cm away and the direct signal from the guitar's internal mic. Balanced between them, panned sideways and voilà :)

Yes, but I also captured the guitar's own inside mic and used a mix of them both.

@@orengilad I don't know how the mkII and mkIII sounds, but the mkIV doesn't sound bad. Allegedly the difference is only that the mkIV no longer needs a 9V battery but two 1.5V AA alkaline batteries, the capsule is said to be the same.
Does the mic sound like that or did you apply any pitch corrector, reverb or effect? Because if it sounds like that without adding anything its an incredibly good mic!
Hi B, just the most subtle of mixing basics. The source did sound really good by itself, but I wanted to make it sounds good as a song, together with the guitar, etc'.. Glad you liked it! :)

Thanks, A! No gear used other than what's specified. All connected directly into the audio interface ;) Correct placement and gain staging will do wonders with simple equipment.

@@orengilad people often try to add unnessary processing or adjust something with their new toy without getting the mics in the right place. I remember an handing over a recording for a charity CD and watched in horror the guy set up all kinds of frequency based compressors on the track as he was hearing the song for the first time. Hadn't gotten to the end of the song without having to monkey with something that didn't need 'fixed". Brought out all kinds of stuff I didn't want highlighted in the mix. People can be so annoying.

why do you have the windscreen on? any special reason?
I've done many vocal sessions with it and found that it catches some unwanted, sibilant noises. You could also sing further from the mic or off-axis, but I wanted to keep some proximity effect.
@@orengilad that is very interesting. do you also put windscreen on large condensers? so youre saying it tackles or tames the harsh frequencies in your opinion. and once you use windscreen, you dont use pop filter simultaneously?
@@ottomanmuzic5744 The windscreen and the pop-filter are interchangeable. I wouldn't use both at the same time. Sometimes I'd record entirely without and work off-axis, but I just love the proximity effect too much. I find it that if a singer has harsh sibilants, it's more a matter of mic positioning and later de-essing.
I think SDC's get overlooked too often for vocal recording.
I think so, too. People often "hear with their eyes", and LDC's have this fancier look that everyone's after :)

I m here fo mic video, but I found really good voice and very good recording. Great job, actually as it's supposed to be according to 90s. Tragically you can't find easily quality music production on digital streamings today, of course it depends on what you like. But producers spent a lot of big money billion dollars... and sadly In some expensive products result is just garbage... Respectively breaking point is arranger, sound engineer, compose and vocalist, so this sound engineer did amazing job. of course getting good voice depends on vocal. Honestly akg c1000s performance is amazingly great here, but may be it doesn't work on all female and male vocal types because all vocalist has different color range. Anyway, amazing job.!

I agree, the C1000s may not be a perfect fit for everyone, but it's definitely a great "Swiss-knife". Also recorded the guitar with it :D

Since this was supposed to demo the mic, the vocals needed to be clear. I could only make out about 1 in 5 words she was singing. I don't know if the fault lies in her lack of enunciation or the mic's clarity, or both.

That pickup sounds fantastic. Sounds almost like a natural guitar. Nice singing and song as well. I love the C1000s I used it on these vocals back in 2001.
