In the first movie, Marty simultaneously had to help his dad in the past with his dad's own character arc, namely growing a spine and standing up for himself against a bully. But both Marty's and his dad's issues stemmed from the same root: a lack of self-confidence. That's the reason otherwise talentless con-men make it that far in life: They are narcissists and have an overpowering self-esteem. And because they can project that and lie and swindle with confidence (hence, "confidence men"), too many people fall for their lies because they believe someone that selfconfident _must_ have great skill... even if the con-man's only skill is baldfaced lying. Sadly, too many American parents these days are being told they need to teach their kids "self-confidence" the wrong way: by telling the little snotnoses how great and special they are, even when they are not, which only results in spoilt narcissistic brats who have never been told "no" and can't deal with losing or criticism and will throw temper tantrums and bully others. No. Find something you are good at and cultivate that. But acknowledge that your balls won't shrivel and drop off when you accept help. Because in real life, few people will offer you help.
