O boy this inspired me to tell of my only win ever. I was Jol nar and was way behind on victory points. I had 6 and my two playmates had 9. It was my turn for imperial 1(I only have the base game) and my secret objective was to take over someones home system. One opponent was the saardak nor and he had left his home space unprotected to go fight my other neighbor. Now, there was a wormhole near me but even going through the wormhole his home system was one space too far away even for a cruiser or war sun. Unbeknowest to him I had an action card allowing for one more space. Whats so funny is that he even had diplomacy but he truly didnt consider me a threat. Instead he out all his resources into limiting our third player to his home system, thus preventing him from scoring the last point he needed. The look on their faces when I then revealed the action card and bombarded his home with my war sun was truly something of legends. Then all I had to do was claim imperial, hope for anything but the game over card and then claim my now not so secret objective. Thats the story of how I turned around a game of 6 to 9

Twilight Imperium is such a big game that it holds the entire game of Diplomacy inside of it.

Loved the video, especially the passion Gastel has for the game, his number 1 tip gave me goosebumps, at the end of the day its all about the space soap opera \ memories we can make with our friends. Thanks for the vid!

I think these tips are broad enough to apply to both 3rd and 4th editions, especially the closing remarks which emphasize the player's journey towards victory (even if victory proves elusive) and the stories that arise from friends who get together to immerse themselves in a glorious space opera.

It's officially on the "To do" list. I would really like to find a top tier player to do this with, but I haven't yet connected with such a person.
@@LegendaryTactics best place would be to pop in the TI4 discord. I am a stubborn man and refuse to play with POK. Nowadays all competitive play is done using the expansion. I play mostly with friends. Not a top tier player at all. No time for it sadly.

And I totally agree with the last point. That the fun of the game is chasing the victory not the victory itself. Spending great time with people you like and having much fun together - this is what makes the game so exciting.
Sadly in my group we had too much players ready to eat each other alive for the sake of victory. It went so ugly sometimes that in the end I sold the game with all the additional inventories and abandoned this group.
Games do become sullied by poor memories. I'm sorry that such an epic game has been lost to you. However, there are many new games that have epic moments as well. Give some of those a try and enjoy a new group. Maybe eventually one of your new group will say, "Hey we should play Twilight Imperium...", and the rest will be history.

I try (not always successfully), to have that mindset with most games. For some reason, I can never do it with Charterstone. As such, I stopped playing that game. On the other hand, Quantum is a tight complex game, that I never care about winning - although I do - but rather enjoy watching the plans of my enemies evolve before my eyes.

We can lose perspective when competition is in the air. It is important to remember why you love boardgames in the first place.
I was plaing with friends in group of 4. After 12h I have won but the moment to remember was when I was on 9th point and in the next round it was my win. They tried so hard to block me with every move they got, but I had to many win conditions. With 4 blocked I have won with 5th one :). Epic moment. And that was our first game ever :)
So good. It's definitely a game that weaves a narrative.

My best friends and I play so often that we actually have created achievements per game, and A-war log of winners ,how they won, and their personal Notes. To us the game has such a flavor that the continuing story is just amazing.
That's great. You could turn it into a Legacy game.
Well we have experimented with scenarios before It's like a reaper invasion From mass effect or like worlds collide with Star Wars and star trek with varying results

Very confusing mixing 3th and 4th Edition in showing things and not saying to witch Edition you are referring ur Tipps to. You also not mention Prophecy of Kings Expansion, why? How old is this video? Would like to see more TI4 Videos, but you will have to dig deeper, much deeper. This here is a bit superficial and seems not like a Legendary Tactics video at all. The different editions and TI4 with PoK, seems to be different Games, with a similar theme, witch would need different Tactics applied to them. In fact you even would have to go that deep, making a different video on every faction, that would be a lot of work and would need a lot of playing experience, but you did these with Root, and the Videos set a Quality Standard, this one here just couldn’t reach, not even close. Strategy even differ a bit, when you play 10 or 14 VP. Sorry for being so critical, but this video is disappointing, missing ur own standards so much.
Sorry this was disappointing for you. This was intended more as a beginner guide to get to know the strategic principles of the game. It's certainly not a faction or race specific focused video. I only own the 3rd edition and was really keen to use live cinematography rather than the digital shots from Tabletop. Gastel was speaking to the 4th edition, but perhaps the images I used were off putting. At this point I'm not planning on doing follow up videos to this one, but it felt like we needed to have at least one video on the channel about this incredible game.

Something to learn from for your future videos. Otherwise I like how this video was made, though I am not really the target audience here.

No problem Kirk. I picked up my copy of the 3rd edition for 50$. Everyone was getting rid of them when they upgraded to 4th.
Kirk, this is a huge game. So before you buy make sure you have a venue to play. Opponents, time, and a large table. I say this just so you don’t have it sitting unused in your house. 😀👍

I see now that I should have borrowed my friend's TI4 copy for the filming. The strategic principles are based on 4th edition, but the visuals come predominantly from my older copy. I shall endeavor to be more thorough in future videos.

Pretty disappointing that this is about 3rd and 4th. I sold my copy of third a long time ago and I've only played 4th ed. With PoK now and the three codexes they are a lot of differences between the two.

I've only played this game twice so far. It is long... very long... The first game took 12 hrs (including set up) but we managed the second game in half that time. Still 6 hrs though! I won the first game and came away thinking that it must have sucked to play that long and lose. However, i got battered in the second game and have literally not stopped thinking about how I could have turned it around. That's a sign of a truly great game, when you spend just as much time thinking about how you can improve the next time you play as you do actually playing the game.
I appreciate this video and the effort that went into it. However, it seemed a little bit too much as though the speaker was saying "technology is important" and "trade is important". It seemed a little lacking in specifics or was too general for my liking, which is a shame since I'm sure the speaker knows what he's talking about.

Are these tips relevant for the newest edition?
In ti 4 base JOL NAR is an easy win and with the expansion I think jol nar and sol are top tier
POK took Jol Nar down to an a- or a b faction. The tech based objectives come up less often now.
@@jaystrickland4151 interesting I play base game mostly with Codex 1 and Errata. I tried a game with POK and honestly didn't think it was worth it. Anyway, we houserule that there can be only two tech objectives max on the public objectives. If you reveal a third, discard and draw a new one. This makes Jol Nar just an excellent faction instead of God Tier XD.
Yeah showing us a very old version of the board game in 2022 throws off the entire video. It feels like the video does not take the new stuff in mind like the POC expansion.
This is a problem I shall have to remedy. Know any TI 4 world champions?

Yes, we wrote them with both editions in mind. We tried to speak broadly about strategic principles in the game. For example. the way you foster friendships and establish a table presence apply universally.

I agree with jmwytube, I was bit confused. I thought you were discussing strategies for 3rd edition and almost didn't finish the video as I was only interested with 4th edition. Hope you cover more ti4 content.
