Why Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal | History of Nepal

  • The reason Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal is intertwined with the story of how this small kingdom rose to be able to withstand a global superpower, and this story starts with Prithivi Narayan Shah, the first king of the kingdom of Nepal. But, before he was the king of Nepal, he was but a ruler of a small town called Gorkha, which was then known as the kingdom of Gorkha. In 1743 AD he set out on a campaign to unify small kingdoms around Gorkha. He started with Nuwakot, Kirtipur Makwanpur and Chaukot. But when he reached Kathmandu, he did something strange. He decided to proclaim himself as a monarch of the kingdom of Nepal, centralized this region for future conquest, and not his home kingdom of Gorkha. More than 250 years later, the shahs no longer rule Nepal. Today, it is a federally parted and democratically ruled republic, but Kathmandu still remains Nepal’s capital.

this feels a lot like watching a vox/johnny harris documentary. which is to say that it's incredibly well made and has had a lot of effort put into it. the transitions, the music, the scripting to the subtle ticks and sound effects on the scribbles - all these details blend so well and make it such a smooth watch. above all, it accomplishes the job that it's supposed to do - explain the topic well to a viewer. fantastic job, guys. looking forward to more of these.

this is truly a really well composed and nicely elaborated video , but it misses a few nuances that are important in how things evolved , especially from the NOMENCLATURE and NEWA point of view , as y'all mentioned about the origin of Kathmandu valley , the texts available are not just the banshavali , but the scripts from Swayambhu and few more Chinese scripts too have significant information about the bodhisatwo MANJUSHREE's part and how the Valley got its name ,
the valley was initially named NEPA , the ethmological roots giving it the meaning " BLESSED BY THE GRACE OF GOD" , the inhabitants were initially and even till the Unification by Prithivi narayan Shah were called NEPA"MI" , and due to the business route and friendly approach f the Malla dynasty was a key point of trade between chinese and indian terrains !!
However the thakuri/ Gurkha Shah dynasty of the west were considered more hostile and initially after the conquring of the valley , the whole trade scene fell in to pieces , when the name GORKHA RAJYA was used coz businessmen just feared to use this route !
So aded to the already well made infrastructure and seeing the financial /arm force benefits and to preserve the trade route , the NEPA valley was chosen to be the Capital of United Gorkha Rajya , name evolved to NEPAL , but the NEPAMI ppl got converted to NEWA /NEWARI .
    .
but seriously this was such a a beautifully presented and well rounded with videos and photos and very well edited vox style video , absolutely loved it
kudos to the team , looking forward to more amazing content

you are right. kathmandu belongs to everyone. the main contention between the locals and the state is over control and management of the centuries-old cultural heritage, key aspects of which have been systematically dismantled in the past 50 years by gorkha politicians and planners. i don't think the locals ever forbid outsiders from settling in kathmandu and making it their home. inclusion and mixing are at the heart of the nepalese ethos. you are also right the nepals themselves are a conglomorate of different ethnic and racial groups that have mingled in the valley across the centuries and remained bound by a common language spoken since kirat times. respect the locals and help conserve what is dear to them; you will always be welcome and loved.

    Great video. Few corrections -
    1. Nepal mandal was not limited to the Kthmandu Valley. The borders of Nepal as ruled by Newar Malla kings extended from Trishuli in the west bordering Gorkha kingdom, all the way to Langtang and Dolakha in the north, to Chilang (southern Lalitpur bordering Vijayapur Sen kingdom) in the south and Sun Koshi in the east (bordering Kirat kingdoms). Places like Nuwakot, Thankot, Dolakha, Banepa, Dhulikhel were Newar Malla controlled principalities.
    2. The Gorkhalis couldn't make Gorkha their capital because of obvious geographical, economical, political reasons. But they did try to change the identity of their new annexed territories as part of the Gorkha empire. They wanted their kingdom to be called Gorkha, their language as Gorkhali, their culture as Gorkha culture. But this simply did not happen because the people of Nepal Valley always identified as Nepala>Newara and they simply rejected this forced identity. With time, Mahendra just gave up this effort, instead building up on Nepali identity.

    • @gauravamatya9602
      @gauravamatya9602 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

That was exactly what I was thinking. We can clearly see that the Shahs didn't initially plan to make the name of this country Nepal and also wanted to make the Khas language or Gorkhali as they wanted to call it, be the name of the language, which has now evolved into what we call Nepali. Most of the maps made by East India Company and even early British India mention the country as Gorkha and they called the new inhabitants Gorkhalis or Gurkhas, also being the reason we still call laures Gurkhas and not Nepalis.

We are not taught how they came into power, how far did we extend under different kings are how the diplomacy was. It's funny how we are not taught about any wars they're fought to extend and defend our country. Nothing. And these were kings who wrote great vamshavalis and were intricate in even the smallest matters. Yet we know nothing.

Ne pa (kathmandu valley) was one of the principalities and it was not big as you have mentioned. Many of the places you mentioned were separate principalities. They had their own ruling family and and governance system. For example Dolakha, Dhulikhel, Panauti, Sanga, were separate principalities and separate wars were fought to take control of these areas. Most of these kingdoms/principalities were economically well off as they were in the trade route. Langtang and Chitlang area were ruled by Tamang chieftains.
Nepal has existed for a long time. However, Nepal in popular culture to refer to a current nation came into use very recently, in context of history, It was around the 1920s during the rule of Chandra Shumsher Rana that Kingdom of Gorkha was replaced by Kingdom of Nepal as the Ranas were ruling from Nepal. This can be seen in the British Raj documents. Historians Mahesh Chandra Regmi and historian Ludwig Stiller refer to this in their books.
The valley has a very rich history and many groups of people have settle down in this fertile valley over time and contributed to its rich heritage. This region has been fertile and has always been the central principality in the hills. Like in the Newari language ‘Ne’ meaning centre and ‘pa’ meaning principality/country.

Valley didn't experience wars or that it didn't have an active military is not true. Valley used to be regularly attacked by Khas kings of the west. Malla kings had an active army consisting of battalions of Khas (Chhetri), Sayn (Tamang, Magar), Doya (Maithili), Gahrwali (Nagarkoti) soldiers who were under Newar Kshatriya army chiefs. Even today, some Newar clans like Pradhan (Pa-mah-ju/Pradhan Maharathi jyu), Amatya (Maha-ju/Maharathi jyu), Rajbhandari (kajis), Wanta, Maskey (Maha-Samar-Kesari) suggests they once were linked militarily.

Good Video but Nepal doesn't have border with mainland China. Mainland China is very far from Nepal(or Kathmandu). We have border with Tibetan plateau, not mainland China. Tibet and mainland China are very different geographic, cultural places. Tibet has 4 million population despite large land whereas Mainland China has 1400 Million population.

Amazing video, but I have some criticism:
    1. The narrator seems to be lacking of confidence, due to which the voice seems artificial (meaning the voice feels forced during some parts) and the narration seems a bit fast for my liking. This can be solved with more experience.
    2. For the editor, in some parts the music track shadows the narration which I don't like. Also I don't know if the narrator spoke with low volume or there is mistake during eq.
Otherwise a nice video, graphics on point. I wish all of you best for your future.

Those of us who studied a while back, we have a theory about Arniko. We believe he took the Pagoda design to China. Like the son that excels the father. China now is considered it's natural home.
Next video idea. Bhrikuti would be great. She was a princess married off to a Tibetian/Chinese Prince. She used to be reveared like God back in our times. Not sure if youngsters now know about her.

One cannot exactly say that size of ancient Nepal was only within present Kathmandu Valley. The historians have recognized then Nepal in Late MALLA era spread across present 12 districts.
The historical chronicals written by Jayasthiti Malla mentions boarder of Nepal was Sigatse in North and Gayaa on South, so may be Nepal has been enlarged and contracted time and again with unstable political situation and wars.

One thing is, after the conquest, Shahs never made each of the ethnic groups feel one. The only way they could rule was divide and conquer as they were taught by british. So the protection and conservation and all won't happen as only the Newa: of kathmandu valley considers the heritage their own. Others mostly think they own it. (not saying everyone) And Newa:s don't have control over anything. Even their own guthi is run by some bahun, no offense. If i say Everest is mine, i'm a bhote. if i say lumbini is mine, then i'm madhesi, if you say kathmandu is yours, you are Newa:. When this will happen then everyone will pan out in right direction. and in all this there is no bahun in kshetris. and the thing that's going on in USA about black lives matter kinda situation arises here. I don't intend to offend anyone. but the truth is many people don't respect indigenous people and try to put them down and rule over them like slaves. Because they know once each of the indigenous people in Nepal knows the real history, they won't comply the current way of the governance. (be it king, rana, democracy (loktantra, prajatantra) or communism. They all are the fox in sheeps skin.

If kathmandu was not made capital of nepal, the shah dynasty would have toppled in 1st decade of unification.
Prithivi narayan shah knew about this fact very well. As there was no densly populated town in whole nepal, there was no option.
Its kathmandu which was easy place for PNS to suppress any kind of revolt , that could occur in coming years, which he did.
I would like if you people do some research on how was life in this new country in 1st and 2nd decade after unification.
And the real name of Arniko is balbahu. And he is from patan.

Nepal before conquered by Prithvi Narayan Shah was much bigger than what this video is showing.. So please correct yourself. It reached as far as Dolakha and comprised Nuwakot as well. Prithvi Narayan Shah was just a greedy person who wanted the riches of Kathmandu. The history you are showing is tweaked and false in many aspects.. Its totally Bahunbadi and Rajabadi.. as it glorifies them unnecessarily. Its not Prithvi Narayn Shah who was able to conquer Nepal, but it was the wish of british as the fall of Kantipur meant more control over india as it severes the india-tibet trade. and if old trade line is blocked then Indian sub-continent totally depends on british trade line. Also they wanted to reach tibet themselves, so they needed a greedy puppet who was Prithvi Narayn shah. Non Bahun historians have pointed out by their studies of notes in UK that british only acted as they were helping Nepal but sided with Prithvi Narayn Shah. And once they realized Gorkha is expanding more than it should they fought against Gorkha and as we know today Nepal (Conquested Gorkha) is half of where they reached. And the reason the whole country is Nepal is because british only choose to recognize Nepal as country not the Gorkha; when India was trying to contain Nepal in herself, it was the Newa: language script and culture that helped register Nepal as a sovereign country in UN. The Shah's have not built anything new. But any rulers that have come forth only destroyed the what was already there. Even the todays advocates of Democracy and Communism... After all they are bahunbadi and rajabadi people in sheeps skin. And @eKagaj the way you are saying the kathmandu belongs to everyone, you should correct yourself. The indigenous inhabitants of the kathmandu valley are not your slaves.. Newa: people have welcomed everyone to the extent that their identity is gonna be just in history. Yeah there will be few people who create nuisance. But it can't be one sided. but if you consider the other way around is more true. and also just because Nepalese work and live in countries like Japan, Korea, Australia do you think they give them rights as those white people, oh no. But to think about it, we are the one of the most oppressed people in the country. Each regimes; Shah's, Rana's and now the democracy encroached by Bahunbad has sucked every pint of life from the indigenous people. The reason Malla, licchhavi period flourished is because they turned themselves into the Newa. As in they accepted themselves as the people they were ruling. But the shah's never did.. Forgive me if i am saying too much, but the people who once lived in those remote hills, of course don't want to go back and want to remain in kathmandu.. We are not your slaves.. If you give respect, you'll get respect.. I'm 25 now, and i remember some of the grandfathers and grandmothers who didn't even know to speak Nepali..how will they read, and because of that many people took advantages and ripped people of their belongings and properties. and also think about How you mock us. How you try to put down and think yourselves as superior. So, to the kinds of you, i say, fuck off from the kathmandu.
