  • In this video, filmed at the ISB 2023 Convention in Ann Arbor, Michigan, we meet some incredible double bass luthiers to discuss innovation in double bass making. We cover topics such as ways to reduce the use of endangered woods, reduced-size instruments and other developments. Big thanks to Gael McKeon, Kathy Reilly, Joey Naeger, Mitch Moehring & Arnold Schnitzer for joining us and for sharing so much!
    First up, I talk to Gael McKeon, Kathy Reilly and Joey Naeger about how to reduce the use of ebony when making double bassists, why it's important, and what alternative materials there are out there. Next, I chat with Mitch Moehring who shows us one of his basses, and we talk about double bass sizes, particularly smaller bassists and what bassists are looking for in their instruments. Finally, I catch up with Arnold Schnitzer where we discuss his incredible asymmetric ergonomic basses and what he's been working on. All of these luthiers are at the forefront of instrument making, with new ideas, concepts, and materials, so it was really interesting to find out more about their work. Of course, there were many many other incredible luthiers also attending the ISB, who we hope we can catch up with next time!

    This is great! Bravo to all these fine luthiers! I had the pleasure to play on Gael’s restoration and Mitch’s bass at the ISB. The fingerboard on Gael’s instrument felt absolutely perfect. Mitch’s bass sounds great. A privilege to meet with these fine people and play on their beautiful instruments. Thanks Geofff!

      Thanks Lloyd! I agree, those basses were both incredible and two of my convention favourites. :-)

    A very interesting set of interviews, thanks. I think it's high time that we find alternative materials to use in place of exotic hardwoods.

    Hello very intersting indeed. I'm a french double bass maker and I was wondering where can I contact the people making the paper/resine fingerboard?

      Indeed! I got to play a bass he made quite some years back at Gage's old spot while joy-testing basses with an old friend, and we were both *quite* impressed by its sound and playability.

    Brilliant interviews, and captures a little of the feel of the ISB convention. I would so love to go to this already, although still such a newbie on the bass. Love Discover Double Bass, it is a super resource for bass players. Thanks Geoff!

      @@DiscoverDoubleBass BTW I received my bass pin the other day and will proudly wear it at our first Double Bass workshop in Blenheim NZ this weekend with my wonderful teacher Alanna Jones of the NZSO! I'm already hoping we can make this an annual event and expand it with time....!

    The young luthiers are way too friendly. In my experience, older luthiers tend to be curmudgeons - the crankier, the better work they do.

      What a ridiculous notion! Funny though.

    Where is the innovation?

    • @DiscoverDoubleBass
      @DiscoverDoubleBass  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The topic is innovation in double bass making. The first guest have made a 100% ebony free instrument, the 2nd reduced size and the last an incredible asymmetrical with holes in the ribs. It's all in the video.
