Was it 100 feet or wasn't it? A lot of people have been talking about the size of the giant wave Garrett McNamara rode on January 28, 2013 in Nazaré, Portugal ... except Garrett McNamara. Until now.
In this interview, GMac sets the record straight on who said what, who didn't claim anything, what it's like to surf the biggest wave ever, and how close he actually came to surfing that big endless barrel in the sky.

Wave of a lifetime! Garrett is a great guy and incredible surfer.
Regardless of the numbers , it looked like a monster and you sliced that beast !!
What a humble man.
Some guys try to measure the ‘back of the wave.’
Some use buoy readings.
Some guesstimate the front of the breaking wave (the part you’re actually on).
Hawaiians used the back of the wave then cut that in half, in a sort of reverse machismo and to dissuade Californians and others from coming.
Some overestimate the size wave they’ve ridden bc it can be hard to accurately guess.
Others bullshit.
Wave period and whether it’s a reef or beach can greatly affect the size of the breaker. So, to me it’s simple: surf spots usually have multiple riders. It’s relatively easy to come up with a fairly accurate height for the front of a breaking wave with a rider. That’s the size of the wave.
I think that was wave was around 2........2 damn big!
Simply awesome love his comments a true surfer. That barrels are better than large waves. It was simply wonderful footage and a memorable ride on a massive moving mountain of water it looks 70-80 feet to me but massive nevertheless

1. Big wave, way to go Garrett.
2. I've seen lots of video and photos of the big wave in question, I'd guestimate it around 80 feet which is ridiculously huge.
3. Garrett, you weren't 10 feet from the rocks.
if he'd been 10 feet further to shore, he'd have been thrown by that wave he ducked under and smashed to pieces by 80ft wave after 80ft wave.

I liked his comments about being in the barrel!! For me, thats what its all about. Time sense changes, it seems to stop, and /or speed up!!, Do you breathe?? Yes, but i never was sure of that until watching gopro barrels and listening!! Its totally altered reality for those seconds:) LOVE IT:)
