- First Anglo-Afghan war ended with the destruction of a large British force near Jalalabad. The Army of the Indus under General William George Keith Elphinstone was destroyed by the Afghans under their young commander Akbar Khan. This action triggered a harsh response from the British. Great Britain sent another army under General Pollock to punish the Afghans. How did this army fight its Afghan opponents and what happened to the Afghan emir Dost Mohammad?
