I am SO glad I was a kid from the mid eighties to the mid nineties, so many superior Lego themes like space, pirates and castle. I have big respect for the era from the mid seventies to the mid eighties but I can't help thinking that Lego lost something after the millennium.
Well said. Pirates, space and castle themes were the big 3 in the 80's and most of the 90's. Lego was really on their game during that period. I wish I had kept all of those sets seeing as how a majority of them have gone up in value by a substantial margin.
@@Gingersockman its the licensing that kills me the most about Lego now. Most of their main line is Harry Potter, Jurassic park, Marvel/DC and STAR WARS. Like they can't come up with their own ideas anymore.
The Fright Knights definitely need to make a comeback. I have a soft spot for dark fantasy and they over-deliver on that front. I especially loved the black dragon with translucent orange wings. Maybe it was supposed to be a giant bat instead of an actual dragon, but hell, I loved it anyways. :)
I had/felt one (bag) in my hands in the Lego store back then but didn't buy it, since it was briefly prior to my medieval Lego-times renaissance :'( buhuu
As a 80s kid, crusaders, black falcons ans forestmen are my favorites, and i like their reissue. But the not-official factions from cmf are great : Raven, Bear, and i made a brand new one from the unicorn shield ( cmf 18).
I pledge my loyalty to the Black Falcons. And that's why, like with the Blacksmith Shop before it, I could not miss the Mountain Fortress from Bricklink Designer Program series 1 (despite being a tad above of my usual lego budget 😅).
1978 to 1983 are my favorite castle factions. Would snap up any rereleases that Lego would make of them. A bigger, taller, and more kitted out Yellow Castle would be hard to resist. I didn’t have it as a child but I would get one or two as an adult.
I think we are in another golden era of Lego castle since around 2022/23, a renaissance even, considering Pick a Brick: The Lion's Castle, the Blacksmith, the Viking Village, the Medieval Town Square, the Black Falcons Castle on Bricklink (and soon to come the Black Falcon’s Siege Battle Pack) are all absolutely amazing and perfect Lego Sets. The downers being their size related prizeing, their at times limited availablity and the lack of smaller and more affordable regular sets and lines. Yet still THE greatest addition, is the selection of available theme related parts and minifigures on Pick a Brick: plenty of beautiful shields (mostly descending from the Lions Kights Castle) and torsos/legs, both in perfectly updated and beautiful new designs, weapons, armor, many other great small parts and items, and a never seen before abundance of animals, of which many are closely related to the middle-age time periode like the horses (at times a variety of 3!), sheep, cows, pigs, goats, chicken, etc. Pick a Brick alone allows to create and customize a plentyfull world, even massive armies, for relatively cheap, which I did.

Looking at some of the later castle and knights sets, I can see why it fell out of popularity. Too many details and completely outlandish color schemes. I'm glad I got to be a kid in the 80's. I had goten out of lego for some reason, probably to play video games, stupid video games, but I do like some of the sets from the 90's. Those early 2000's sets, though... damn. Sorry kids. They did the same thing to GI-Joe in the 90's. Lose total perspective of what you're trying to emulate and force designers to "Jazz it up" "Make it BIGGER and BRIGHTER!" "Kids love unnecessary details!" I"m glad Lego toned it down later, but I feel like LOTR was the final nail in the castle coffin. Much like StarWars killed the Space theme. I'm glad to see the reissues of the older sets, but I'd like to see all new lines. Let's hope they're just testing the waters for new lines.
