Four Tops had a long career. Their lead singer Levi Stubbs is standout. They have many hits worthy of reaction. Such as : Baby I Need Your Loving, Standing In The Shadows Of Love, 7 Rooms Of Gloom, Bernadette, I Can’t Help Myself and more.
This has another fantastic bass performance by the legendary James Jamerson, whose sound Paul McCartney admittedly and admiringly wanted to emulate from around 1966 on.
The Four Tops are one of my favorite Motown artists. Yes, Detroit, Michigan was known as "The Motor City" being the automotive industry hub. Mo-Town is the genre title from Detroit. All original members have passed away. Abdul 'Duke' Fakir passed away at the end of July 2024. Suggesting: "SAME OLD SONG", and "CAN'T HELP MYSELF", (the versions of them dancing with "non-matching" outfits). 😄My favorite is on TH-cam as an extended version of "ASK THE LONELY"
There is a video on youtube that has the lead singer, Levi Stubbs, singing "Just ask the Lonely" A cappella. Some one isolated his voice from that song, what a great voice
Lead singer Levi Stubbs was considered the best singer at Motown; they wanted him to go solo but he refused to abandon the other 3 which is unusual loyalty in the music business. Check out their song "Just Ask the Lonely"; great backup girl singers.
I was thinking the same thing.I was just saying to my daughter a few days ago, that some of my favorite actors have that range, such as Michael Keaton,Dustin Hoffman,Jamie Fox,Glen Close who did Fatal Attraction, and 101 Dalmations Four tops were such a soulfil group.I love "Bernadette" by the Tops. Motown had great writers including Smokey Robinson. The last member of the Four Tops recently passed away.R.I.P.
Oh that great "Motown Sound." We were so spoiled in the 60s and 70s with the quality and quantity of great Bands and artists. Nothing like it anymore. Thanks Shawn
The Four Tops is one my all-time favorite Soul group along with Earth Wind & Fire. I love them in the 60's and I Love them now in 2024!!! The Four Tops were the pioneers of Soul/Motown music along with The Temptations and The Supremes.

This is the type of music my pops liked in his late teens all the way to the end. No Hendrix or post-Dylan Beatles for him either. Not just Motown music, though. Many local pop stations played all types of easy listening music from the times. Fabulous era in music. Keep going, my brother!
In 1979 my very best and oldest friend, for my 21st birthday, got me super surprise tickets to see the Four Tops in a small club in Berkeley…it was a mesmerizing wonderful night of music and dancing and I was so grateful to be able to see them up close in such a small place. They put on a magnificent show, all original members (until 1997 when the first original member Lawrence Payton died)❤
Great reactions Shawn...now I am going recommend my favorite song from The Four Tops that I played constantly in the 60's when I was young...."Standing In The Shadows of Love" by The Four Tops. lol and I didn't have a clue about love or heartaches I was so young, I like the music and the lead singer's voice, Levi Stubbs!!!
Four Tops was the first show I went to in the late 80s. I was 6 and we were on holiday in Spain. My parents said “we’re going to see the four tops tonight”. I had no idea who they were. The show was amazing and we danced all night. At the end of the show, the guys came off stage and kissed my granny, who had been dancing like a mad person, all night!
Love all the great Motown artists. They had real class & beautiful harmonies. Love the matching choreography steps that these groups had. The Four Tops had lots of hits such as "Baby I Need Your Loving", “I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)", "Ask The Lonely", "It's The Same Old Song", "Standing In The Shadows Of Love", "Bernadette", "Ain't No Woman", "Something About You", "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)", "Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever" etc. The Temptations had a similar style & also had lots of great songs.
Temptations are my favorite. My girl, Papa was a rolling stone, I wish it would rain, Just my Imagination, Ball of Confusion, Ain't to proud to beg, I can't get next to you. So many great songs
Other commentors have already explained the meaning of Mo(tor)town, but let me just add that back in the day Detroit literally "put the world on wheels". Even the founder of Motown Records, Berry Gordy, worked on the automotive line before he decided to take the leap and start a record label, using all local talent. And a special thank you, Shawn, for mentioning that fabulous bass line, played by the wonderful James Jamerson. He was a member of the Motown house band, The Funk Brothers, who were the very talented--though uncredited--studio musicians who provided backing to all the songs.
For someone that's just feeling their way in these reactions, you sure seem to hit 'spot on' on a lot of what was going on at the time of the composing of these great songs. Good job, keep it up. I, for one, enjoy it immensely.
Holland-Dozier-Holland was Motown's most successful songwriting production team in the 60s, and pretty sure second only to Lennon/McCartney for #1 hits that decade. Motown never let a successful formula die without milking it so HDH followed "Reach Out" with the similar (also great) Levi Stubbs vocal/James Jamerson bass showcases "Standing In the Shadows of Love" and "Bernadette".
Hi from UK . Bass player was Jamie Jamerson . . Was with the " Funk Brothers " who played on most of the Motown music . He played on 23 number one hits .! And also inspired Paul McCartney to experiment more .
Yeah, man, you hit the jackpot. Another GREAT R&B band that were a constant presence on the radio, like The Temptations, The Supremes, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and all the Motown greats. Dive deep, there’s a lot there to explore
Thanks a lot. Always appreciate your interesting analysis and your enthusiastic reactions and especially when the song you're discovering brighten up your face with a heartfelt smile of pleasure. Love this band. This song is iconic and one of the most wellknown Tamla Motown song. The Jackson Five did a huge slower tempo cover with Michael singing lead. Irene Cara did a pleasant disco version.
When Levi Stubbs is on vocals you need a master holding down the bass line. Bow down to James Jamerson. One of the great things about Motown was regardless of who the up front vocal talent was, there were the same cadre of master musicians, known as the Funk Brothers, playing the instruments. They filled my youth with joy.
Here's another song by an artist, I believe you've reacted to before and seemed to enjoy his work. So, if interested, give this one a listen. "Richard Marx - Should've Known Better (Official Video)" (by the channel: Richard Marx) --This song was written, composed and performed by American rock singer Richard Marx. It was released in 1987 as the second single from his triple-platinum self-titled debut album and the song peaked at number #3 on the US Hot Billboard 100 as well as #7 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in 1987 as well as topping other charts as well....in otherwards this is a Banger! 🤗
Archie Bell & The Darell’s is a Texas band I recommend. “Tighten up, I could dance all night, I can’t stop dancing, There’s gonna be a showdown, Here I go again, & Let’s groove, to name a few.
That's the '60s Motown sound! And, yes--the song Bernadette is a MUST! The video is so great, too. Thanks for reacting. If you haven't already, I hope you will react to some more Stevie Wonder soon. The extended versions shows off the fabulous instrumentalists, since most hits were always cut so short for radio play.... I Was Made To Love Her and My Cherie Amour are so great. th-cam.com/video/Q4H_pWQaa2I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uLq4nIRzWSfMeGOb It has 20K likes. P.S. Motown=Motor City=Detroit
The late, great James Jamerson on bass. He only used his index finger when playing the bass. He played the majority of the bass lines and riffs for almost all of Motown's artists and their mega-hits. Both Bass Player Magazine and Rolling Stone Magazine have ranked him #1 as best all-time bassist.
HDH were the house songwriters that penned some great songs for Motown. TFT were all over the waves at that time, great group. Bernadette shows off Levi's vocals a little bit more, cheers Shawn.
Slight correction....There are no living original members of The Four Tops since Abdul "Duke" Fakir sadly passed away on July 22nd 2024 at the age of 88. Duke was with the group for 70 years. Lawrence Payton passed away June 20th 1997 at the age of 59. Renaldo "Obie" Benson passed away July 1st 2005 at the age of 69. Levi Stubbs (in my opinion the greatest lead singer of all-time) passed away October 17th 2008 at the age of 72. The current lineup consists of Alex Morris, Lawrence Payton Jr., Ronnie McNeir, and newest member Michael Brock. The Tops are my favorite group of all-time, and one of the greatest to ever do it.
Hi Shawn! GREAT SONG AND REACTION!! . . . . . . Brandon Jones shared your recent member video with me. I just want you to know how much we've enjoyed all your reactions and you as a person. Don't be scared to do what's best for you, and limit yourself to the time spent on building the channel. Sometimes building slower, and as it fits in with your life, is what's best. We would hate to see you go, but don't feel pressured or that you'd let any of us down. You've really only brought us up with your love for music! Detroit was called Motor City because most cars were built in Detroit. The record company called themselves Motown as a combination of Motor and town.
The Four Tops epitomise the 1960s Motown sound. In the UK this was their first hit. And just listen to that bass!
One of the greatest songs of all time, IMO. Fantastic reaction, Shawn!!♥

Ask The Lonely is my fave Four Tops song among their many gems

I agree about Brad Pitt playing the same type of character in most movies. 😊
The recording quality was good enough for AM radio.
