    I was really worried about this show since (even tho I haven’t read the manga) the ending of s1 felt odd and I wanted them to resolve it because I’d loved everything until that point- while I wish they had shown robesama earlier, the story has been thankfully back to standard and I’m hoping it sticks the landing this time round.

      season 1 mostly ended weird because there's not really a big satisfying arc conclusion for a while in the manga, so it went anime original for a bit. but for season 2 there's definitely a conclusive moment they could end on, and i hope they do it justice in the anime

    Interesting. I have never thought about these points you mentioned. When i finshed the two seasons, I started with the Manga from when the Anime adaption stopped. (So around chapter 80)
    And when looking back, I do agree now, that some choices with the adaption are...questionable. Not necessary bad, but just...questionable. (Like, for me, it's the Design of Edward; he looks he lot older in the anime, then in the manga) And changing the story is also...questionable. Like, Shaun's brainwashing was not taken care of at a point in the manga, whereby in the Anime it was already? Wow....that's a pretty huge change.
    Still, overall, I still like the anime and I do hope, there will be another season.

      Yeah, I don't want anyone to suddenly hate the anime or anything, more so just understand why someone like me would have this kind of perspective. Glad you thought some stuff I talked about was interesting and glad you enjoyed the anime!

    Anime is super expensive. All shows have too low budget in places. Still sad everytime l see a low effort episode in otherwise great work. Here l agree with the points that some effects/sequences could be done much better without needing to increase the number of frames required by using them better.

      yes exactly. good directing doesn't require a large budget

    Your complaints about the Emilyco scene I think are off and I believe it's because you read the manga. Having only watched the anime, and in DUB mind you, I definitely felt the impact of that scene. I felt the momentary hopelessness that Emilyco had realizing her friends are still entranced. I felt the intensity of the mind control on the characters. I think it conveyed well, may be not exactly the same way it was in your description of the manga, but I definitely felt this scene. Overall I think you're just being nitpicky. I'm not going to argue that Shadows House doesn't shortcut some scenes, but the show has still be very impactful.
    To be honest, when I watch an any show that tries to use "comic book framing" of scenes, it tends to actually take me out of the moments for the novelty of that style of framing. I recognize the framing as "Oh I see they're trying to make it look like a comic adaptation" which interferes with the emotion trying to be shown. Basically I think this is a style that you either enjoy or don't, and I don't. If scene has motion/is animated, you don't have to convey that scene through panning still frames, just animated it.

    Never read the Manga. Really liked the Anime. Upon rewatching I noticed they repeated a lot of Points, the adults children and humans all chewing through the same conclusions individually. I dunno, probably makes more sense in the Manga.

      You are actually quite correct. Without spoiling much the whole point is that information is very controlled between the groups. Its sort of the "cat and mouse" theme.
      I dont remember who said it, but its story is very comparable to Promised Neverland 1st season and i agree with it very much.
      Id even go as far as compare it to Shiki.

    If Shadows House got a movie remake I would actually watch it. That's how much I enjoy the plot and how disappointed I was with the directing with some parts of the anime. Maybe I wouldn't have any gripes if I hadn't binge-read the manga before watching Season 2... late regret.

    Hello, I got this video recommend by the algorithm last week. I always thought that the anime was bad, but I didn't care enough to read the manga. Well, now I'm reading it and I love it!
    I also saw some of your other videos and that you have seen Higurashi. I recommend you read the visual novel for it, the anime is a really bad adaptation because it tried to squish 200 hours into just 2 seasons, skipping over a lot of important stuff, covering over the plot holes it created with anime original bs (that don't even cover the plot holes in some cases), making the bond the characters share a lot weaker, and only show the surface their despair.
    I also recommend you to read Umineko which is written by the same guy who wrote Higurashi (Ryukishi07). Unfortunately it got a far worse adaptation that didn't even bother adapting the introduction to the characters.
    Both Higurashi and Umineko are available on steam, also there is a mod that fixes the typos and adds the visuals and voice acting of the Japan exclusive console ports... well, except for the voice lines that got censored because of politics.
    There is also Ciconia (his new VN) which is also available on steam and got translated in English day 1 because of fan demand but only the first arc is out, and it's been on hiatus ever since covid started because he didn't want to write about a worldwide crisis when one is actually happening.

      Ayy glad to hear you're enjoying the manga! And also thanks for the rec on higurashi, I've heard others say similar things about the anime vs. the visual novel. As an anime viewer i thought the plot and bond between the characters was handled enough for me to get the themes and enjoy the story, but I've definitely considered looking at the VN to get more of the full story

    Oh, man, just stop already. As if your previous video wasn't enough disservice to this criminally underwatched anime. By all rights, it should be the hit of a season. Instead all I see when searching "shadows house" is endless bitching about how it was disastrous and how Cloverworks fucked up things again. If you read the manga then you should know that after the debut had started a long ass continuous arc that just couldn't be split between seasons (especially if studio wasn't able to secure funds for season 2 yet) without making up some interim ending. In this video you comparing Shadows House and titles with much bigger budget per minute of screentime (Koe no katachi) or with much less limited time frame (Berserk - full 25 episodes only for Golden Age arc alone). And still, they cut a lot from Koe no katachi: the entire "making the movie" arc for example - how's that? And won't even get me started about pre-2000s anime: it was only veeeery loosely based on manga in most cases.
    As for Shadows House, IMO adaptation is great. It may have some minor flaws, as do any other title.

    • @chryysanth
      @chryysanth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      this video wasn't about the story or production of the Shadows House anime, just about how i think some of the directing choices fail at capturing the same feeling as the manga, though you do raise some good points about possible reasons as to why the anime is like this. however, none of those reasons really excuse anything in the anime that i talked about in this video.
      sure maybe the berserk anime had more time to be made, but that doesn't really give shadow house an excuse to have bad storyboarding in the scenes i talked about. knowing how to consistently capture the right emotions and enhance it through the framing of characters and whatever is what's missing from shadows house, and i can't imagine having more time to work on it would've really helped that much. thank you for the comment mr. smith, hope you continue to enjoy the anime!

      @@siginotmylastname3969 personally i think reviews should give evidence for broader claims about the art they criticize - examples of the broader trend of similar, unmentioned examples throughout the media. I don't think it's valuable to say something has mediocre directing without talking about why I think that, but you do you I guess.

    Can we please just enjoy the different details in each of the Manga and Anime and stop comparing them? It's getting really boring and as you yourself said, you're being overly negative.
    The anime doesn't need to be an exact copy, it's alright for small differences to be made

    • @chryysanth
      @chryysanth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      mann you didn't understand what i was saying! it's ok for anime to be different from manga (that;s why i used examples from a silent voice and berserk) but if the changes make the anime worse (like in shadows house) then i think it's bad

  • @Modie
    @Modie 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I feel like the essay is really badly structured. Like I get what you are trying to say, but you are not making your point very well. And this is because of several different issues. One obvious issue that should have been spotted in the editing process at least, is that you talk about "A Silent Voice" when you refute the whole example immediately afterwards. As a viewer, I feel you just wasted my time, because the whole thing was rather pointless. It feels like you came up with the example first (maybe you still had it in mind, maybe you watched the movie recently) and therefore you put it in the script only to then realise that it isn't the best comparison. But instead of just cutting it out, you left it in. This is why you should make several rewrites of your script to see things like that.
    Secondly, you are trying to make a point by choosing very specific scences to compare, but then you are also saying that there are moments where the adatation does exactly what you want. Which leaves the viewer with the impression that you are just very pedantic about certain scenes. Like, of course some scenes will be done better than others depending on what the person adapting the work thinks is important and what to focus on. That doesn't mean you can't criticise these scenes, but for your overall message in which you are seemingly trying to make the argument that the adaptation is not very good, this seems to be counter productive.
    What you get at the end is an essay that feels like you just wanted to complain about certain scenes not being as good as you like them to be. Which wouldn't be so bad, but since you try to make the video sound more than it actually is, it feels very cheaply produced and as if you didn't even know yourself WHAT you actually wanted to talk about.
