    EPISODE 116
    This week we take on a job that we have been putting off for many months - to sand back and varnish the entire deck structure. It’s a little crazy to try and varnish in such cold weather, but it’s going to be a lot easier to do this before we install the deck blocking and deck planks! Luckily we have plenty of hands, with Patrick returning for a third time, Jake’s final week, and some extra help from our friend Nina.
    We also continue to process the Yellow Cedar deck stock, adding the caulking bevel and chamfers and painting the underside. Backtrack makes a rare appearance at the lunch-table, and the travelift rumbles past the workshop with another unwieldily load.

      I think the answer to whether Leo is this, that or the other one is, "Yes!" These are top notch, high quality videos, as good as I've ever seen in any professional videographical setting. And how many other boat builders have started with basically a shipwreck, a set of original plans, a tarp-covered shed next to someone's garage, and gotten every one of 10,000 angles and curves absolutely spot-on to the original? From the math to the metallurgy, these have been a master-class series on using a few dozen varied disciplines, including stitching together a volunteer, rotating crew, sourcing raw materials, picking the best from amongst several design and procedural choices, to arrive at a build so faithful in its reconstruction as to qualify as a restoration instead of simply a new build.
      What is Leo? I think the easier question is, what _isn't_ he?

    Old woodworkers trick is to build your layers with satin varnish. It goes on shiny but dries satin to see your coverage and then your final topcoat go for the gloss. As long as you keep working that green stage there shouldn't be any adhesion issues

    • @johnflorian6745
      @johnflorian6745 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That's really clever. Since the satin effect is really nothing more than a fine surface roughness (or so I suspect), a final topcoat of gloss buries that roughness and it looks clear all the way down. Plus, the hot coat would slightly wet it out once again.

    • @paulhaynes8045
      @paulhaynes8045 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would another approach be to use slightly different colours of varnish for alternate coats (finishing with the colour you want)? Perhaps by adding small amounts of stain/colour, if coloured varnish isn't available (or is too coloured)? I've seen something similar done when layering epoxy, so you know that you've completed each coat.

    • @hankcohen3419
      @hankcohen3419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Problem is that satin includes an opacifier that will cloud the gloss from underneath. The usual recommendation is to use gloss up to the topcoat and then use satin on top if that's what you want.

    • @buellb0y
      @buellb0y 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The problem with that theory is the flatting paste added to satin or “soft” varnish does exactly as it suggests. It cures softer than a gloss varnish. This is precisely why one uses a full gloss varnish (hard varnish) for all undercoats, and finish with a single top coat with a lower luster.

    • @sethgabel6366
      @sethgabel6366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hankcohen3419 This. Satin from the get go will muddy the grain and dampen the natural luster of the wood.

    It Couldn’t Be Done
    BY EDGAR ALBERT GUEST
    Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
    But he with a chuckle replied
    That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
    Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
    So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
    On his face. If he worried he hid it.
    He started to sing as he tackled the thing
    That couldn’t be done, and he did it!
    Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
    At least no one ever has done it;”
    But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
    And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
    With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
    Without any doubting or quiddit,
    He started to sing as he tackled the thing
    That couldn’t be done, and he did it.
    There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
    There are thousands to prophesy failure,
    There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
    The dangers that wait to assail you.
    But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
    Just take off your coat and go to it;
    Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
    That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

    Leo, I LOVED the segment at 15:28! Not because of the tape, but because of everything un-taped!
    In my opinion, you could throw another 5 minutes of these kinds of "glamour shots" of random parts of the boat into each episode and I wouldn't be bored at all. I know you're focused on the new work when cutting together these episodes, but I just always feel like I could use more shots of the work that was already done in the past! Both closeups and macro... I just feel like there's so much more time I'd like to spend gazing at the work, even though I've religiously watched every episode. Every time you have an episode where you "linger" a little, I get a thrill. Cheers.

    The bead moulding on the beam shelf(?) featured a few times during the varnishing , and it looks very consistent. I remember Pete putting it on with a router a while back. There's nothing that looks worse than a wobbly beaded edge and I couldn't help flinching as he nonchalantly stepped over the ribs along the inside of the hull whilst doing it. In my experience, there's no easier moulding to bugger up, even when done on the bench. And then later we found out about Pete's legs. How does he do it? He hasn't got some sort of automatic stabilization built in to them has he?

They and the lunch breaks and discussion times add a great deal to giving us viewers a feeling of what else goes on in the daily life for you guys and gals. These are among the many reasons why I love this channel so much. Thank you Leo for making this so much more than just another boat building channel. It is educational, yes, but you draw the audience in and make us feel like we belong to the crew, if only as family members who may not get to lend a hand with the work, but really get to see most of everything that is going on along the way, really getting to know all of you.

    That Choy Lee aft cabin that was being hauled out shared the same name as my boat (Hibbard Motorsailor) "Venture".
    The interior of Tally Ho is going to be a thing of real beauty. I wonder how many miles of varnish is going to be applied to the interior of that boat. I loved doing the 'dry tack', as I called it, varnish jobs. I once got seven coats in one afternoon on the outside of my cabin that way. That was the day it was reported on the radio that Elvis had died. I was in the middle of a coat and couldn't stop.

    Leo you might like to look into a product called Penetrol. You mix it with pain or varnish and it makes those coatings flow like silk. All brush marks disappear. All the super yachts use it when varnishing their coamings etc. It leaves a spray like finish.Stable and durable, it compensates for the adverse effects that weather and surface conditions have on paint. Used alone as a primer/sealer or added to oil/alkyd based paint, varnishes and stains or metal and wood primers it enhances their inherent qualities and makes them stick to almost anything - even glass. Brush and lap marks are eliminated. Premature peeling, cracking and chalking are a thing of the past. No more uneven paint film - a major cause of early breakdown of surface coatings. And unlike thinners, Penetrol does not evaporate and actually makes more paint. By ensuring greater coverage from each litre of paint it saves money.
