A penniless man gathers the food each day for his family in the forests and on the meadows, and he finds a nice crow with a mysterious writing under its wings, but as he was illiterate, he could not unscramble the meaning of the words. However, a wonderer turning up there understood the text, and he offered heaps of money to the poor man, if he roasted the bird, and he could eat its heart and liver. The hungry children of the poor man stole exactly these two pieces out of the pan, so the mysterious writing under the bird’s wings was fulfilled on them.
Made by the Kecskemét Film Studio.
Directed by: Lajos Nagy
Storyteller: Gyula Szabó
Music: Kaláka band
The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

Help
Welcome to the club
Not alone
Me too Ive been watching the channel all day now
I know right... I just found them today after watching Bee and PuppyCat
Yeah me too!
I wonder if the crow was part of the town ritual to select the next king. Like the king senses he will die in a few more years and released that crow to find the next heir.
That would likely to happen
A crow or a raven often represents both death and rebirth in Hungarian folk tales, so I think you're correct.
yeah i was thinking something like that. maybe it was his spirit and each king selected a blessing for those who ate with the future king.

Cries about bird getting slaughtered. Eats its heart and liver anyway
Oof you dont know what hunger does to a person
I have heard stuff from my mother back when see was young with her 8 siblings (dont ask me i dont know what went through my grandparents mind and had 9 kids while being poor)
the one crying did not eat
Not to mention they re fire proof cuz their hands (and heart) didnt get burnt since the meat's STILL ON PAN which is completely hot
To be fair, it isn't like not eating would've brought the bird back.
I grew up in farm for a year, I was 6 years old I cry for every chicken sheep and duck slaughtered and eat them with a cheerful heart and stomach.
So the moral is:
Always sit on benches.
You never know when one of them will turn you into King
Don't forget to eat your pet crows liver and heart
THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND ONE I’VE SEEN WHERE THE SIBLINGS ACTUALLY CARED FOR EACH OTHER. THE FIRST ONE WAS ABOUT THE GOLDEN HAIRED BOYS.
There's also the prince who turned into stone-
WHY IN BIG TEXT THO
The story of Cerceruska too
Add ‘The Pussycat Princess’ to the list
I like how the dad had every right to be angry since they were poor most times the dad's just a jerk because
Origami Gem *grabs shirt* BECAUSE WHAT? BECAUSE WHAT!?!?
Don't leave us hanging
Ahh, I'm not the only one.
pretty sure he just meant "just because" at the end
His dad saw the comment in the meantime.
finally a story without a love story.
simply just family love :)
"The Diligent Girl and the Lazy Girl" is another such Hungarian story

I’ve been having trouble falling asleep lately due to stress in pharmacy school and I looked up folklore stories to see if I can listen to them and fall asleep. And now I’m addicted 😂
@@AmoebaInkthey are the bedtime stories of all 15 million hungarians
The poor crow came back to life, right? You can see in the end that the crow came back to life and came to live with them at the palace
Hungarian Tales dabble in lots of reincarnation
I'm gonna say the crow came back to life
Lilach Glick probably not. Could be customary that the king senda off a crow with the exact writing and that could be how the king is chosen
This is a very interesting story, and I think the Crow may be immortal. Coming back to life when a new king is needed.
That's one greedy wanderer.
The nose seems to be symbol of greed/evil in these animations.
@@paulthetyyppi I've noticed that too. I know I'm going to get hell for saying this, but I can't help but wonder if it is inspired by some sort of anti-semitic propaganda. It wouldn't be the first time that jews were characterized as villains in cartoons.

@@HungarianFolkTales Will there be more?
I'm going to be so sad the day I watched the last of these. They are all amazing.
I also have no idea how I happened across these videos but I love them. I. m 67 and apparently still delight in Fairy Tales. Off to the next . I now have new bedtime stories for the Great Grand children when they come.
Careful which ones you play for them, some of the videos are pretty racy. Lol.
I'm binge watching I'm hooked
in Hungarian landsyou can become king so easily
'king' is used interchangably with any local lord. It was also told by word of mouth by lowly peasants, who probably didnt even know what a king was.
@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 I highly doubt they would not know who a king was, given that at the least, taxes and the local currency would refer to.the king and, criers and heralds would be announcing edicts and news. This is a tale for children, that is why it refers to rising to kinghood, since why would a child aim at just being a lowly baron (or the equivalent). Any good storyteller knows, for kids a good story can be exaggerated to impress them so they remember it.
@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 lowly peasants you say . Funny thing all humans die. Lowly or "noble"
@@LostArchivist Not really. Feudal societies were isolated into self sustaining pocets, and the pesantry didnt pay taxes directly to the king.
@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 One need not pay or even own a currency to know what it looks like. Moreover, there is no such thing as a typical medieval society as we know it, those are largely modern constructs to help us grasp their different way of life, nor hard and fast rules they followed. It would be relevant if we could confirm this was the case in the the area the tale originated from however. Though given the history of the region as I know it, many small, petty kingdoms are not out of the question.
I'm really enjoying these Hungarian folk tales.. Thank you! 😊😊
Mmmmm, That's some good art
Thank you, in the name of Pannónia Film Studio. :)
Hungarian Folk Tales are there anymore episodes or this all the boxsets from 1977-2012?
@@HungarianFolkTales on wow, I never expected do get a response from you!
@@kapilbusawah7169 Hello, yes, this is all of them!
I feel so sorry for this poor bird. Also i was hoping for the brothers to bring their father at the palace as soon as the older became the king. It was the father who found them.
I like to imagine they did later.
Also, I agree with you about the bird.
Being Hungarian I absolutely LOVE having my roots here to listen to and learn from xoxo
So wonderful! Miss those storytelling times. Thank you for reviving 🤗
"I happen to like the taste of crow" lmao
The wanderer looks like a hungarian Waluigi.
Nice story. I never knew this. This deserves a spot on Grimm's fairy tales tv show.
Love the art
It is pretty unique snd interesting and it fits with the tale
It also makes you think of some kind of magical place (just like the stories are)
The art has gotten better Holy heck.
These are from the 70s.
moral of the story: don't try to eat peoples birds
There are plenty of crows where I work, I'll be king for sure!
Only one way to find out, catch one and eat it's liver and heart ! 🍴
Morals- learn how to read, eat your pets, sleep wherever you like, forgive your parents
Fantastic stories and delivery! Thank you
I love how this story turned out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how the crow respawned 😂
Poor bird
Ikr T^T
Wait a minute.. the beginning about magical bird is similar to Malay myth, "Story of Serangga Bayu" or in other name "Story of Ahmad and Muhammad" It involve a magical bird if certain bodypart is eaten, one would be a king, and in here, one would be a prime minister.
What a lovely tale! It reminds me a little of The Two Brothers by the brothers Grimm.
I love the stories
Grim morale: sacrifice life for a stranger and you'll get the kingdom.
Just a little bedtime story!!! ❤
I want this guy delivering the eulogy at my funeral

I love watching these because of the compulsory happy ending. 😉🤗
Poor crow. But I liked the tale.
Imma just binge these the night before an exam thanks
I'm also addicted but This story is so nice like Awh
I don’t know how I found this channel but I love these stories. Wish they would make more
They were created by the folk during centuries. People were working on the fields, singing, telling stories to each other. Most of them are from the 16th-18th century.
The moral in all Hungarian tales:
the blonde hairs are superior to others!
yeah i thought i was the only one who notice that
I'm binge watching these videos. And I'm currently on Season 2 hahaha
Love the drawings. Gyula Szabó is superb.
I love these Hungarian fairy tales
Best happy ending story ever 😊

This is the story that teaches the importance of literacy.
I got anxiety when the animators drew the father adorning new clothes without adding a scene of bathing 6:34
Well my dear children, what did we learn from this tale???
Slay all the crows, of course and good things will happen... Indeed!
this is probably one of my fave stories in this series hahaha
Why am I watching this at 3 AM ???

1000PIECES OF GOLD
Eat crow and you'll be a king. And rich.
Same. Ever heard of a poor King?
Crow: *starts to sing* "Hi! I'm a crow and it's dinner time! Who want some crow meat? Please I just want to die! Hey somebody kill me! Please, it's dinner time. Have tried crow meat today? I wanna die, die die!"
(Sorry I made thos up in my head because of how willing the crow was to die. It reminds me of that muffin song. xDDD )
It's a cross between "Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp" and "The Salmon of Knowledge" almost. Although, it applies to TWO remarkable young men as opposed to just one getting all the benefits for himself.
I’d settle for the three coins every morning🧚🏻♀️🏵
I actually like all these folk tales
Rip to the bird lol
These stories needs a Disney adaptation 😍
Oh, please, no. Let's not ruin them.

The sons forgot their father?
is it just me or do two siblings inthese sotries always get along better then three? Two Brothers are nice to each other, where as with three brothers the two older ones are always mean
Do crows like this exist? We have LOTS of crows where I live. If one of them is magical, it might be worth my while to try to catch them.
Good story
It breaks my heart when they roasted the poor crow and its so painful to see cause I an bird lover but not only birds but also every animal but I had been a bird lover since I was born
c'mon, will you stop eating plants if you get to know they can feel pain?
@@sohailape being a bird lover doesnt mean vegan
Im a bird lover myself but i would love some bacon or beef or something
Fictional or not
Nature or not we cant really just make that slight pain from watching this go away and no one should forbid us from commenting it
Thats the point of commenting anyway right? To tell our thoughts about this video and feeling bad about a character is definitely a thought
spaghetti it seems quite sheltered though. The crow is either eaten by the humans or eaten by a wild animal. It also seemed like the children would've eventually starved soon after. What's worse, seeing two boys starve while a struggling father keeps more of his food off his plate so the kids easy or see one bird become a finger licking meal?
Why am i addicted
Those were ancient runes under the wings
I forgot to say good story
Good one...
Is just walking into someone's house uninvited and bending over a normal thing in Hungary?
Im so sad the raven died :'(
"He regretted all the money he had lost"
Me: Not killing an animal that loved you for nothing but money and not pushing your sons from home with nothing but each other because you were angry (until later)? I feel more sorry for the crow and your sons....
Beautiful sight of internet spotted!!
😊
Moral: If you have a pet bird gaurd it or walowigi will steall it!
1:36 such Pokémon logic
I love these folk tales and all, but they leave so many questions to be answered. I have got a few: What kind of crow has jet black feathers that shine so brightly? Where did it come from? Who enchanted its heart and liver to bring whom ever ate them good fortune? Why does it have old Hungarian script written on its wings? Who wrote it, and for what purpose? Why does this kingdom have such a very loose system of choosing a new heir? So, anyone can just sit on that bench and become king? If so, why didn’t anyone else try to sit on it before the two boys?
You know what, maybe these questions are best left unanswered.
These are amalgamations of many religious and mythological tales told by word of mouth amongst uneducated people since the 800s, and written down in the 1800s.
They have so little cnsistency, because they are basically medieval meme copypasta.
Crows for example feature prominently in early hungarian heraldry.
Wild animals leading the would be king to his country are part of the origin myth of the country.
I need no channel youtube! I never knew that that was the reason for so many plot holes existing in these kind of stories. Doesn’t mean that they’re no longer enjoyable. Thank you.
OK first of all, good questions!
The crow is the simbol of the house of Hunyadi. One of the most loved our kings was Mátyás (Matthias) Hunyadi. Thats why the shiny feathers. He lived and reigned in the late XV. century.
The old scripts are written in old hungarian alphabet, and sadly its just a bunch of random letters. The two wings says the same, and its something like: szpavkma ... and it it means nothing as far as I know, as a hungarian.
And the matter of the new heir : As the legend sais King Matthias elected as king by the people, on the ice of the Danube in the winter of 1458. His father was János (John) Hunyadi who become earlier the richest and most influential nobleman at his time. He used his power to strike the Ottomans whenewer he could, so he quickly become the hero of the realm, later when he died, his two son kept in "prison" for whatewer reason in Prague, his older son László ,who ment to be the peoples king, has executioned, Matthias howewer freed, and elected as king. His Fathers deeds and Matthias's reign gave the nation some time to flourish before the Ottoman reign of terror. We call him Matthias the Just.
I dont know mutch about benches but historically the hungarian throne went, at that time, to the closest possible descentant of Attila Hun or Árpád, and has a religion of catholic, and so mutch more criterias.
So basically its a fairytale for the children and something to think on for granpa...
''What kind of crow has jet black feathers that shine so brightly?''
mate have u seen a crow in real life they have iridescent feathers
@@antonioalbul00 I have. But they are not a common sight in San Antonio. And the ones that I have seen were too far away for me to get a closer look. But I do know that yes, like the plethora of male grackles that I have seen, they do have iridescent feathers. But listen to how the crow in the story was describes the crow: Black as night, with its feathers shining like the stars. I know that in animation, you have to exaggerate certain descriptions like that for effect as they did here, but iridescent feathers don’t shine like that. They reflect the suns rays, but they don’t appear as bright as the tale describes.
Guess the bird was...
*Miraculous*
What oddly convenient customs
Ong look this time its the older one being blonde
What happened after that Greedy Wandered left without the bird liver and heart
Oh, karma will get him.
And together they lived, happily ever after.
Until the father died of old age and the eldest died of grief. Then the younger boy was kicked out by the new king and died a beggar.
The Hungarian phrase is: they lived happily until they died. So that particular piece of deeply insightful criticism dosent really apply.
I thought this story would be like Remus and Romulus.
Odd way to choose your monarchy
I mean to be fair, he said he'd eat its meat. So the boys just took two pieces of the meat that happened to be the liver and heart.
You got to be more specific, sir 😂
