  • Pyotr Velikiy (Peter the Great) is a heavy nuclear-powered cruiser, the flagship of the Northern Fleet of Russia. The fourth ship of the 1144 Orlan project (NATO: Kirov-class battlecruiser). The biggest battlecruiser in the world with a displacement of 26 000 tons, second only to aircraft carriers.
    At the beginning of its construction in the 1980s, the ship was named Kuibyshev, and then Yuri Andropov. By the time it started service, it was given the name Pyotr Velikiy and carries it to this day.
    The cruiser’s main objective is fighting the enemy ship groups, first and foremost the aircraft carriers, as well as protecting the sea from attacks. For that purpose, it is equipped with anti-ship supersonic missiles and a wide range of defensive measures against underwater, surface and airborne threats.
    Thanks for watching!

      @Johnston Steiner that's why for modernisation they are turning the 20 launchers for Anti-Ship missiles into 80 UKSK 3S14 VLS that can launch Land Attack and Anti Ship missiles (Kalibr and P-800 Oniks). and the Ships will carry at least two types of missiles anyway as Air Defense missiles will always be present (otherwise the ship is a sitting duck) so the Russians put them in their own launchers.
      same thing is being done in the Project 949A subs they have 24 Launchers for same Anti ship missiles that would be transformed into 72 UKSK launchers wich will give the subs land attack capability + the anti ship capability

      I agree it's the modern incarnation of a battleship. Unfortunately, just like a battleship it places all of its eggs in one basket and can do little that a fleet of smaller, less expensive warships can't. That is why most navies don't bother with large, expensive ships anymore. It's not like you need a 45,000-ton hull to support a 16-inch gun turret. A modern missile system can be mounted in virtually any hull, large or small.

    • @VinnyLam
      @VinnyLam 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      The Kirov is more vulnerable than you think. The US Navy can easily destroy the Kirov. The Arleigh Burke destroyers and Ticonderoga cruisers carry Tomahawk cruise missiles that can strike targets from a thousand miles away. The Kirov would get sunk by these missiles before they even knew what hit them.

      On The contrary, during ww2 in Pacific when Battleship no longer really mattered they were great option to escort carriers as battlecrusiers were fast and their lack of armor or weaponry didn't matter. And their armment was enough to be a great coastal support. Ironically Kongou Class Battalcrusiers made more war impact then mighty Yamato Class or more obsolete Ise Class and Fuso Class. Furthermore, despite Hood being Battlecrusier her strength was similar to Bismarck (tho by sheer luck of Bismarck crew she was hit in weak spot and ammo detonated)

      @JAG but in one thing u are right. The war on Pacific wasn't fought with Battlecrusiers and neither battleships. There were little flights between those capital ships. It was determined by aircraft carrier, submarine, crusier and destroyer. And u can see that in modern warfare as almost no one uses battlecrusiers and battleships.

      It has been in this deep refit at the dry dock at the Severodvinsk shipyard in Severodvinsk, Russia. It is currently nearing completion and it should be floated out of the dry dock in the coming days! So there will be two Kirov Class Battlecruisers once again!
      Also, on a side note, the new and very secretive submarine Khabarovsk has been under construction in the warehouse behind the Admiral Nakhimov. Now that the dry dock's basin has been flooded, we can expect that to be launched in the coming days as well. It is rumored to carry 6 of the Poseidon strategic nuclear torpedos.

      I don't think you could efficiently. I mean you can stick a gun without the ammo load and the whole under deck part but that would be decoration. under the deck they don't have enough space for more weapons or loaders. if they had they'd use it for more refrigirators for more autonomy at sea or fuel for generators/helos or ammo.

    All it took was one torpedo from an obsolete wood and canvas aircraft to disable her; and then a fleet of minor destroyers and other ships systematically reduced her to a hulk on the bottom of the sea.

      @@bluntcabbage6042 every ship is practically too easy to hit but I'd say the Kirov has a lot more sustained protection than most destroyers that others have. The US doesn't employ swarm missile attacks either unlike the Russians. This thing would hold it's own for quite some time before it ran out of ammo; it has a bunch of soft and hard countermeasures.

      @Nobby Barnes This is dumb old school logic. Nobody is going to threaten global annihilation over some at this point non-existential conflicts; it would be conventional, temporary and then would cool off after. It would not go from angry rhetoric to complete and utter nuclear war , it would not escalate like that anymore unless you think everyone in said major power governments are complete morons. Like example, the spat between India and China recently. By your logic, why didn't they nuke each other already???? Only some kid arm chair general thinks the world is so ready to nuke itself like it's the 60s/70s still.
