    I was looking forward to you two watching this. I saw it three times in the theaters and every time I started crying at Waymond's speech and couldn't stop until the end just like you did. Such an amazing, amazing movie. Daniel Kwan said that he wrote Evelyn as having undiagnosed ADHD (thus discovering he himself also had it) and as someone who went through major depression for years due to my undiagnosed ADHD until I was 28, this movie spoke to me a lot. This is how my brain feels like at any given time and I was so impressed how they could just capture it so well. As someone who is always restless and always feels like they are in the wrong place and they should be somewhere else doing something else, this movie helped me a lot to catch those thoughts and ground myself. It is not easy, it is not a magical solution, but it made me feel not alone. Definitely a top 5 movie.

      ADHD is difficult to explain to people.
      Although I'm active and do have a busy mind, I couldn't find myself in the symptoms of ADHD. People explain me their restlessness and anxieties, but I never grasp a full picture of your experiences. I used to have a girlfriend with ADHD and I watched hours of videos to understand what she's dealing with.
      That's until Long Covid hit me and it scrambled my head to the point, that from one day to the other, I suddenly showed major ADHD symptoms along with a heavy Brain Fog.
      Oh-my-god the restlessness is something difficult. I didn't understand what was going on or why I felt the way I felt.. and that really drags you down!
      Now I think it's pretty underrated how many difficulties people with ADHD have to endure their entire lives. I wish I understood that sooner.

The message just resonates for our particular moment right now.

    I love the exploration of a new concept, and this is now pretty much my favourite movie. One thing this movie did absolutely right which so many movies nowadays forgets, is to have heart. Like you guys said, it had all sorts of crazy things going on, but at its core, it was a simple story of family and finding peace with what you have.
    We are all human, and especially in scifi/fantasy, we need that human anchor in amongst the mind bending elements so we can feel and relate.
    If it wasn't for the family drama, this movie wouldn't have been a fraction as good as it was. We can probably list a tonne of recent movies that could have been so much more if they remembered that basic concept.

    But how cool is it they mixed the simple idea of a family learning to love and appreciate another with the concept of a multiverse and the notion that the daughter in thar multiverse felt so undervalued and overly pressured she became a threat to all of reality? Talk about high concept pitches.

You should see "Kung Fu Hustle" and "McDull: The Alumni" (The Alumni is likely my favorite comedy of all time). Those are the previous films made in a style similar to this. The nods to Hong Kong cinema are quite obvious, for example, the wealthy versions of the two characters had the mannerisms of "In the Mood For Love".

    One of the Daniels made a movie called The Death of Dick Long (I've heard mixed things) and they did a segment on an anthology film about a boat (I almost saw it at Sundance 2020). However, their one previous film, Swiss Army Man, is just as unique and strange, and you should definitely see it. The less you know going in, the better.

    Yes! One of the best movies I've ever seen. My family deals with alot of depression, and anger, just lots of negative outlooks on every choice or reason. Quite exhausting. Seems like I've become the family psychiatrist. It's hard to help another see a postive outlook on past mistakes and what not. This movie is so beautiful, and I am able to see both pathways an individual might feel. I've been doing my best to convey balance to my little brother. In choices, but mainly to see what he is happy with, what choices he must do for his own life. Say all of that 5 times fast.... haha
    Oh and the hotdogs for hands universe freaks me out. But I still love it all. All the universes. It was also so odd in that boulder scene. I was the only one laughing in the theater. It was hilarious.

    I saw this is a packed theater opening weekend. And the humor, especially the butt plug, hotdog finger, raccoon chef humor, is most definitely not my cup of tea. So when the room shook with laughter I felt extremely out of place and was just waiting it out.
    And then came the bagel.
    And the shockingly accurate portrayal of depression and existential crisis (I’ve had diagnosed manic depression since I was 13) It was suddenly unbelievably relatable and I started SOBBING. I completely unraveled and spent the rest of the movie trying not to be too loud. It came out of left field, and I was caught so completely off guard, that it was even more powerful a reaction because of that.
    I still don’t know what to tell people when they ask me what I thought or if they should see it, or if I think they will like it.
    This movie confuses me more then anything I’ve ever seen. That’s all I can say. (But I will add the rocks killed me. THAT made me laugh pretty hard)

    Loved this film but so much of that love is for Michelle Yeoh who I've been a fan of for decades, ever since I saw her jump a motorcycle onto a moving train in "Supercop", and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is in my top five favorite films of all time. The Daniels originally wrote the lead part for Jackie Chan, and thank God he turned it down because it became a wholly new angle with Evelyn as the lead. I was so lucky to see this in IMAX at a pre-release screening and seeing it on such a big screen with a loud sound system was AMAZING. It's also so fantastic that James Hong got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame not long after this film came out. Long overdue and so well deserved. I can't wait for the bluray DVD to come out because I will watch hours of behind the scenes on this film. I know that only 5 people did all the visual effects, which in itself is insane. Great, perfect reaction to this amazing film.

    6:20 I know you probably know this by now, but yes. That is Ke Huy Quan who played Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. He has one of the most inspiring stories this year. Next to Brendan Fraser.
    Ke Huy Quan was cast from his elementary school as part of an open call when they were making Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984. He was cast as Data in The Goonies after that. and then his career dried up. He really struggled to find acting roles and eventually quit acting altogether. He actually became a stunt coordinator and worked for years behind the scenes. This was his first major film role in over 35 years and the directors of this movie sought him out specifically. He is amazing! As is eveyone else in this movie. It is a travesty that he wasn't offered any significant roles for decades.

  • @LordLOC
    @LordLOC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This movie better win some awards. Michelle Yeoh alone, incredible. Ke Huy Quan aka Short Round was the MVP though. Stephanie Hsu, Mr. Hong are all great also. Oh and Jamie Lee Curtis, come on! The sets, action, emotion basically everything everywhere all at once, as a movie.
    So fun little fact in case you don't know - the two butt plug guys are part of a TH-cam channel called Martial Club. They are brothers (I think....) and have been studying and doing martial arts for years and years now. Over the past few years, they've worked with Jackie Chan and his stunt team (they're idol if I recall correctly) and the brother who got the not butt plug in his butt was also in Shang Chi as the masked guy that "trained" Shang and got his soul sucked out at the end. I would highly recommend going back and watching some of their Martial Club stuff, since it's SO good and pays so much respect to Hong Kong cinema etc. You'll understand why they were chosen to not only do the fight choreography for this movie but to actually be in it and work with Michelle Yeoh herself (also one of their idols). Ok, info dump over! :)

    The fact the film becomes so emotional and poignant in spite of it literally throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you is incredible. I get her sadness of feeling you have wasted your life. Joy and her depression Waymond and the relationship woes. All of it just...deep. The start to their final fight always chokes me up. • @tylerfoster6267
      @tylerfoster6267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometime after his child roles in the 1980s, he moved away from acting and into behind-the-scenes stuff because he wasn't getting the kind of roles he wanted. He said when he saw Crazy Rich Asians and saw all of these Asian actors together in a big Hollywood movie, he had a pang of jealousy that he didn't get to be involved and started putting feelers out about acting roles again, and got offered this great script. A doubly potent story because I think seeing CRA and feeling regret ties into the themes of the story, the feelings that Evelyn has seeing her other lives.
