You forgot to show how to disable that rear glass from tilting up as it goes up with the front and just closing it with the screw driver will not stop it from happening again next time you tilt the roof . No need to stuff around with consoles or allen keys it can be done in under 3 or 4 minutes . I originally posted photos over 12 years ago on BMW Bimmerfest but they have been deleted. So open the front roof and look into the opening about half way along you will see a plastic fitting with a thin metal spring rod on top . Use long nose pliers and just remove this spring rod at the same time a small plastic part underneath will drop away again long nose pliers and grab it and throw it over your shoulder same for spring rod both sides please . Then at the front of that same plastic part you will see a sort of triangular part pointing down again use the pliers to break off that part . Next like in the video just push that ramp part under the rear glass back until the glass closes , now what you now have done is completely disabled the rear glass from ever tilting again but the front glass and blinds will work as normal . Sometimes its best to reprogram the sunroof so it learns the difference in resistance , press upwards in the centre of the button and hold for at least 60 plus seconds the roof will then do a recalibration . BUT remember do not stop pressing and holding the button until both the shades and glass have gone through its procedure and come to a complete stop , if you take your finger off the button you will have to recalibrate all over again . Good luck . OH in case your wandering I have been working on all sunroofs for over 50 years now .
Thanks mate, worked a treat!
I was thinking the exact same thing about the rear glass and the issue repeating itself, I’m tempted to have a go at your solution but scared i will break something i shouldnt. I use my sunroof daily so would be a nightmare if it broke completely. Its only a 2007 5 series but i bet a replacement sunroof /repair isnt cheap on these. Thanks for the extra info though I will definitely look into it tomorrow as it needs fixing. I’ve wound it closed manually but every time i open now it wont fully close again (the rear glass is fine, the front glass panel wont push all the way back up so i’m having to manually reset it each time i close it, will a full reset sort this issue? I tried one but it only said 15-20s for a reset, i will try for 60s as you said tomorrow)
@@bovinepeak2620 Ok first thing if you do those three things wit that plastic part along the side you will not do any further damage , once you have done the removal of the spring rod and the part underneath break off the front triangular part close the rear glass as show and then rest the roof . Dont beleive any one who says 15 seconds as thats bullshit , you have to push upwards for at least 60 seconds and continue to push upwards which is when the sunroof will start its reset DO NOT remove your finger until the blinds and the glass have gone through the procedure and every thing has stopped . Thats it , as long as the roof was working normally before then it will work again after the reset but will not open the rear glass which was the problem in the first place.
@@hondared250what if the front glass isn’t opening either?
@@TdaBomb142 If the front glass wont open then I can only suggest you need to take the vehicle to an experienced BMW specialist , to do the repair as I posted you need to open the front glass to get to the parts that need modifying . Does the roof try and move at all ?
As a total layman when it comes to car repair, I would never have expected to be able to repair anything in my car just by watching a
Thank you so much. My mechanic said he didn't have the tools to do this fix. I think I'll send him a flat head screwdriver!
😂
I can't express enough positive things to say about this simple fix, roof closed in 2 minutes after wasting hours. Thanks and wish you the best !!!
0009😊😊
After the air conditioning has "quit" me just in time before my summer vacation and after checking in the air conditioning workshop it was clear that it is the evaporator, which must be new (sits in the air conditioning box, for which the entire (!) Dashboard must be removed, was now certain - I must fix at least NOW my also since purchase identically sticking panoramic roof. For the climate calls my workshop around the 2,500 euros - that must wait. Panorama roof repair would also be around the 900-1,200 euros in the best case, a new complete cassette would cost around the 3,000 euros. YOUR video practically saves me the vacation, especially since it seems as if the whole thing would be within an hour (?) already clarified?! I could "kiss" you, my unknown friend! Best E61 fix ever! Thick THANK YOU!
THANK YOU MAN YOU'RE AWESOME!!!!! It's so nice to see somebody taking the time to help another person by creating a video that saves me money thank you so much man you're incredible
Awesome stuff. It worked on my x3. The dealer wanted between $2900 to 4000 to fix mines.
Thank you for sharing. I was having a panic attack just thinking of how much it would cost to fix. I fixed the roof following your video. The only problem I had was the clips that hold the panel broke so now I have a tape holding the panel where the motor is. Thanks anyway. You a a life saver
What an absolute legend!!! The anxiety was real, as I know the dealer would’ve charged a fortune to even look at it!! Genuinely appreciate your help & glad you took the time to form 1 of the best tutorials. (Berkshire, UK)
Thank you sir. I looked on every channel to try and fix my roof and nobody I mean nobody had a real fix except for you. Great job I am now a subscriber to you channel. Thank you once again.
This was great - worked like a charm on my '05 X5. My dealer was asking $4000USD to fix the panoramic roof. Did it myself last night after watching your video. Now everything works except the vent function. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the second time! You have officially saved me $310. It costs $155US to have the sunroof closed by the dealer. A friend and my son both opened it after already paying the dealership once to shut it since I am not paying $2997 to have it replaced. I have now placed black electrical tape over the button. Cheers
You can diconnect the wires from the motor, still the sunshade works and the glass part stays in one place with no wires. The warning in the dash shows allert, but you dont need a tape in the sealing :)
Wow - this fix absolutely works. But a note to E53 owners. There are four small screws holding the cabin light panel in - unlike on the video here (which I think is E70). Do not try to lever this light/switch panel off, as in this video. Open the sunglass holder first (rear of the light/switch unit above your head) - you will see two tiny hex screws, 2-3mm. Undo these, it will come loose. Then gently lever out the forward light fitting from the main panel, and you will see the other two small hex screws. Undo these two, forward screw and the panel drops out easily. This then allows access to the sunroof motor. The rest of the procedure is exactly as per Homerrass's excellent video. What a brilliant fix - which has collectively probably saved all of us many thousands of dollars. As for my sunroof? After I got it closed, I disconnected the switch when re-installing the overhead light/switch panel and won't use it - or miss it - again. One day. I might effect the second stage of the fix which is to permanently disable the rear glass section. See Hommerrass excellent second video on this procedure. Donation on thre way. Many thanks again!
Richard Cunningham thank you kindly for your donation! I’ll enjoy a few beers this weekend :)
Exactly what I needed. You saved me lots of money and anxiety. Sent you some paypal $ in appreciation, and I encourage others to do so as well.
You're a master - thanks for saving our Xmas holidays - no one was happy to help and ur video saved our day.
Fantastic video, and if I can do it then anyone can. It solved the problem completely, and saved a fortune in garage fees. Legend!
Thank you Sir, for this helpful instruction.
My car stud 2 days outside in the rain and strong winds, but covered with a large plastic bag.
With this video I managed do get my sunroof closed.
"Save" again.
As I saw, in a video apart, you also show how to make / to keep the sunroof operational again, but with the rear Part disabled / imobilised.
That's what I will do in summer.
Thanks again.
This guy save me $2500 parts and labor on my BMW X3 same problem he had it works...
Thank you.
Was able to close my dad's X5 E53 thanks to your video. Thanks so much!
thanks ...this helped a lot after my dealer told me it will cost over $1000... i did it in 20 mins ... good stuff!!!
This video saved me $3500. I am just stunned. How does one say “thank you for making it” that equals the significance of that? THANK YOU SO MUCH
This video saved me 4000. We did everything except open up the panel and it worked perfectly. Thank you so much for your help. I was so worried about spending that money for a new rotar and cassette, I think I'm saying it right. Your the best.
Thanks so much for this. I've got an 2004 x5 with almost the same problem. After watching your video, went out to my car with a hammer and screwdriver and... voila... I fixed the sunroof. I thought I was going to have a $500 bill on my hands. Instead, I fixed it myself in 5 minutes. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
WOW! I was just about to go tape the sunroof up. When I said to myself check youtube and there your video was saved me from tapping up my x3 thx many times over.
You just saved me a lot of money and hassle! The garage said the whole roof needs to be taken off and I would need to leave the car with them. Many thanks
I know it is an old post but it recently helped me a lot and i want to share an advice. The video is great and comprehensive but i think it should be mentioned that is important to bring the front panel all the way down first, either manualy with the hex key or by short presses on the button. If you don't bring the panel down first, the mechanism in the back will be locked and won't move.
Total Legend !!! Just bought a used X5 E70 3.5D, (282 HP is just soooo awesome), Sunroof shade will not close fully, in the process of diagnosing that the rear sunroof in vent got stuck open. Doing the hold button in reset does not fix it. Thank you for this !!!
Thank you for the video. I have this problem on my car. What causes it and how to fix it so that the back part works again.
Awesome video, definitely a life saver, I thought my girlfriend was screwed when it wouldn't closed. I really didn't want to replace the assembly.
Great job with this (and what a pleasant voice you have)! After my next cup of coffee, I'm going to tackle this on my '05 BMW X3. Suddenly, the back tilt panel won't close and I think you'll be my hero!

Thank you so much for posting this video! Your saved my E61 from a very wet Scottish autumn.
I thought I broke my sister in laws BMW sunroof and had to shell out 3-4k, until she told me about your video. This took 5 minutes including getting the wrench from the tool box. FANTASTIC!!!!!! Thank You!
Real man that knows how to deal with a such thing. God bless you!!!
Thank you sir it worked for my 2004 x3 3.0i. I followed your both part 1 & 2 videos and fixed the problem completely of the rear glass. Now I can enjoy the features except rear glass exhaust.
Great video. Fixed my sunroof in minutes. I was surprised to learn BMW has been using this sunroof in the X3 since it made its first debut in 2004.
i just brought a bmw x5 a mouth ago with out notice the small part of the sun roof was tilted , it was a private sell . anyway i just looked at your video and i manage to shut it after, i don't really know how long it's been like that , it's so rusted , so i just want to thank you for your video and your big help of shutting my sun roof
i CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS INFORMATION! I WAS NEARLY AT THE POINT OF TAKING AN AX TO MY X3 OVER THIS ISSUE. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
Major thanks man! No mechanic within an hour and a half would even look at the damn thing.
Thank you brother. I was able to fix mine. I was worried to pay a lot of money to change the motors. You rocked.
My dad just bought an 05 X3 and this just happened. He eventually managed to wiggle it to the point the electrics shut the glass. I'm wondering if this is a matter of dirt and friction or a faulty mechanism. I'm going to investigate more and if needed do your fix on the other video. Thanks so much for taking time to make this guide 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks so much for making this it's people like you who make the internet what a great thing it is!! Cheers from London!!!
You are the best person on TH-cam right now
I thought it was broken.. I tried 4 times.. on the 5th try. IT WORKED.. I wasn't patient 👍👍
Thank you for making this video. My 2004 X3 had the problem for a month and it rained yesterday. It's a mess and I wanted to pay the dealer to fix it. Your video helped me fix it in 10 minutes.
Excellent video. Same issue, troublesome small rear tilt panel was jammed open. I went through the reset process and heard a horrible crunch, both panels were jammed. For now both panels are in the rest position and the car should be water tight. Tomorrow I will look to see if I can get the main panel to work and the disconnect the troublesome rear. Many, many thanks
U gave the solution I was looking for and fixed temporarily... Hats off mate
Awesome! Thank you from New Zealand. My sunroof was stuck open on the back right hand side. Did exactly as you showed and it worked. Cheers. Going to have a cold beer for you.
Roger (APPfordable APPs) you having a cold beer for me helps me how ;) glad it all worked out
You just saved my sunday, got the back roof closed thanks to your video! Donation on the way
Thank you sir!! Glad it helped :)
Thank you very much Sir!
For decades I'm a 5-series guy.
I was going to switch to an X3 or X5 because I liked the panoramic moonroof.
Having watched your video in my research for my next wheels, I now realized the double-panel feature is trouble prone.
Yes, I'm handy and mechanically inclined; but I've also become lazy in my pre-retirement years and just don't wanna deal with it to begin with.
I think I should stick with single-panel deals.
you were sent from heaven , its raining in my town and I need to close the rear glass .. what a great video, thanks for posting..
Thanks! You saved my day, and saved the roof from a cover of empty garbage bags and duct-tape!
Tx for all info. I've could save 3-4K thanks to your video. Greetings from Spain!!!
Great video for an instant / emergency fix. I found out that if you try to close the roof and switch off ignition/contact just as the front roof goes down (=before it automatically goes back up), you don't have to manually 'turn' it down.
Fully agree! Helps me an emergency. Thank you very much.
I found it difficult to open around the switches for access to panel so instead I tapped the close button little by little as I pushed the mechanisms back as far as it would let me...tapped some more for the main roof to close then finally everything closed. It opened on the first couple tries until I got really patient tapping the close button and doing the pushing on the back mechanisms for smaller window closure. I only had a screwdriver at the time. Went well. Thanks a million.
Thanks for posting these videos (Part 1/2). Worked like a charm.
lol did u used to work for bmw and got fired for doing things like this? ur awesome! it worked! it was a nice cool day and i opened the vent, then it started to rain :(! Thank you. its finally closed
I know this video is now 8 years old, but thanks a lot. This helped me out massively today 👍
There is a way to close the sunroof with the button. Dont push it all the way forward. just tap it forward a few times and the roof will come down a little bit. then you can push it all the way and it will close works every time
You just safed me in the middle of the night in poring rain! Thanks!!!!!🎉
Haven't actually done the fix yet, but I'm heading out to do it right now. Well documented, clear and thorough.
I got an x3 and had exact the same problem. Thanks for the video, saved me the $$ to take the car to an auto electrician.
This video helped me out a ton. I just got an 07 x3 today and this exact thing happened. Your technique worked like a charm. You saved my interior from rain leaking in. Thanks!!
Thank you...had to do it twice though. Some wacky thing happened after I did it the first time. I pushed the button forward to align it and the big window slid all the way back and rested under the small one. I had no idea our sunroof would do that. Did get it fixed in the end. Thanks again.
Thank you so much watch this video and got my sunroof back to normal position right before the rain 🌧️ came. Can’t thank you enough great video
Had my first problem with the roof today but managed to get it closed without doing this, as I can see this may lead to another problem was great to watch your video in case things get more serious !! Thanks very much indeed.
Danke Danke Danke aus Deutschland für diese tolle Anleitung!!! Wünasche dir nur das Beste!
Thanks a bunch for the help!!!!
My local dealer wanted $3,000 for this job...
Thank you very much .. Your fix work perfect and saved me over $2,000 US . You are the best
Hey man a big big thank you from me ❤️❤️your video saved the day , I was so stressed with this problem and this just sorted it out , thanks a million from me 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧best wishes from Britain 😁😁
Thank you amigo I did it to my daughter's car and you saved her some money thank you
I just fixed my wife's bmw x5 with this video. Thanks for this helpful video
how did you make it vent again ?
Thank you, thank you man, this worked! Slight difference on my '06 X5: the control console is different, and you remove it by prying out the dome light assembly at the front and a vent cover at the back. Under those are two Torx 10 screws each end. Maybe I didn't need to remove it, because the hex key was fully tightened and didn't move the big glass down.
It's important to get the big glass vent closed, though, before trying to tap the lifting ramps back. If the ramps aren't lined up exactly as it looks at 5:33, with the square piece connected to the small-glass top positioned about halfway down the ramp, then it won't budge when you tap it. (I started trying when the square piece was sitting on top of the ramp, and it wouldn't move.) I got the large glass to lie flat by working the console control a bit - pulling it toward the back of the car, I think. Then the weight of the smaller glass panel came down off the top of the ramp and I could then tap it back.
Thanks again!
HOLY MAN! THIS HELPED SO MUCH!!!! I WAS FREAKING OUT. Such good instructions and it worked perfectly. Thank you for the help.
The back driver side of the small panoramic glass roof portion would not shut from being in vent mode on one side. This was causing my entire panoramic system to not shut out of vent mode. This video was EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED TO DO! 👏
Hello sir, thank you for this video. I still have a problem with my sunroof. I simply cannot make the roof go up or down with the hex key. It seems like it is jammed. I can lift it maybe 20 mm and then no matter how hard i turn the key it won't move. Do you have any idea why?
Thanks!
THANK YOU Who knew it can be so easy. Saved the day!
Thanks for taking the time to do your Beemer sunroof videos. Hope my new car (second hand) doesn't suffer the usual issues but at least I'll know what to do to fix it. thanks.
OMG! Thank you for this video. Instructions are detailed and easy to follow. I appreciate you.
This is EXACTLY what I needed, before I went and made things worse. I managed to slide the front window over the back. This will fix the original problem though once I get that worked out.
Hi Thanks for the video it helped me a lot, the easy way to do the job is at the 3 minuet mark of the video if you press the button to make the roof go down then turn the key of the car off at that time it stays down if you do this just as it hits the back glass then continue at the 5 min mark
Oh my good, 10 years after this video it saved my ass. My back tilt would’t close and the dark clouds were gathering. The trick with screw driver and hammer was a saver. Had to move glass a bit from the top with ice scraper and redo the process, but it’s all closed now
Thank you!!! This saved the day!! My E70 got stuck open in vent mode, and I used this to get it closed. Unfortunately I now have the Sunroof anti-trap warning.. if you have a fix for that, please let me know!!
i'll tell what I just sign up and open a youtube account because of you ... my respect!! good job !
Thank you so much happened to my 2015 X5 I was freaking out I thought I had to go to the dealer I did this and completely worked but when I tilted it stays up like that again so I can’t tilted I just have to open the front sunroof but not tilt it
Este es el mejor video que he visto, la mejor explicación y solución
fantastic, just got car and 1st time i try roof it gets stuck , did this and all working great. dont get that much sun in the UK but nice to open and close the roof when dee rain comes down.
Лучше поздно, чем никогда... Спасибо из России! Thanks from Russia))) you are the MAN!
Thanks a million
I just did Mine and it did close,
I did the reset and open and close fine
Great video and reassuring that I can fix myself but what is the cause?
Thank you soooo much!!! You saved me a lot of money!!! A subscriber to the Tenth Power!!!
This has been very useful. Thanks ..I was able to close mine. A couple suggestions:
1- Add WD40 and the stuck roof slides really easy upon hammering
2- Disable the switch under the panel so that no one messes with the roof again by mistake! I will leave my sunroof closed from now on!

Absolutely the clearest, most useful instructions I have seen. Dank U Wel!

I real appreciate you did upload this video, if you did not, my car could be damaged trying to close that lid, thank you man
Thank you..ur video helped me out..a connection wasnt plugged in....
Thanks!!!! it's 16 degrees and snowing and my moonroof is stuck open & I'm going to go get some tools & tap!!!
What a Guy ! You should do more videos.. clear concise and very helpful. Having sid that I am looking for a Guy withtwo good hand to help me with the tapping :-)
Thank you soo much for this helpful video!! We were able to follow along exactly and it fixed our problem, such helpful clear instructions when before watching we didn't know where to begin, thanks a ton!!
Thanks a lot mate! This will hopefully help but in any way you showed it properly I liked that!
Can you tell me or gimme link to video with closing Sunroof Shade? I know is on the back of car, got E91 and i close my roof manually with this vid but need to know about shade manual closing
Very nice! Thanks, you are a very good person! for 3 months i have the roof open.
thank you!!! saved me hours of time and a huge headache!!
Thanks for the awesome video. Fixed my stuck moon roof in less than 10 minutes. Had a question concerning the sunroof shade that will not close. It is the second half that covers the moon roof. Any manual fixes please. Thanks. Again excellent video.
