  • UK F-35B Lightnings have disembarked on completion of the first phase of operational tests onboard HMS Queen Elizabeth in the USA. This 5-week period has been a significant, and historic step towards their first operational deployment together in 2021. The test period included further flying with USMC F-35Bs. Leading Photographer Dan Shepherd captured the adrenaline-fuelled action onboard.

@Maxi Delevingne it takes a special sort of insecure to equate promoting diversity with anti white. One of the Army's biggest problems these days is recruiting and retaining manpower, so why not try and recruit from a wider section of the population?

@Maxi Delevingne sure if those were the ads I'd agree, but none of them are actually like that? And as for non white people identifying as British or not, that probably has a lot to do with how people like you constantly make sure to remind them this is a white nation. Doesn't exactly make them feel welcome

They use a mechanical block to spare the brakes, but it's possible to do it without them.
'Ski ramps' have been used on carriers since the second World War. If you know how underpowered some British aircraft were back then, you'll appreciate that anything helps! On (then) modern carriers pneumatic accelerators- the forerunner to steam catapults- were enough to get the bigger, heavier aircraft aloft, but there wasn't time, budget or even a suitable dock to give HMS Furious a decent refit. She got a small ski jump instead. It started from efforts to lengthen and even out the bump between her short 'upper taking off deck' at the front of the ship and the slightly lower 'landing on deck' at the rear, but, whether by accident or design, the ramp proved itself so useful the angle was increased the next time the ship was docked down. Don't get too excited though, it was more of a gentle incline than the modern version!
Sorry about the poor quality phot! upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/ba/830_Squadron_Barracuda_taking_off_from_HMS_Furious_at_the_start_of_Operation_Mascot.jpg/300px-830_Squadron_Barracuda_taking_off_from_HMS_Furious_at_the_start_of_Operation_Mascot.jpg

Totally awesome video production , but I honestly feel the QE should have been a CATOBAR type design minus the ramp and operating already by now, on initial deployment at least -- with either Block II+ Super Hornets, or Rafale M . Perhaps could procure some block IV F-35A, if no additional advanced Typhoon acquisition was required and just call it a day 👋

America owes the UK we should give you the planes. If Mr Steel didnot uncover trump betrayal of America god only knows were we would be at with the russians. Now he is out and ready to spill everything he knows to the russians. When he got clovid they should have closed that big mouth when they got the chance. Kevin from sunny Mexico

      Err .. ....
      Did the aircraft get airborne?
Were they launching as fast as CATOBAR?
      Were all retrieved safe?
      Yes. Yes. And yes.

Bravo, incredible little film. Also, we know ALIS and that supercomputer you call a helmet has some sort of Jedi mind trick up it's sleeve. Interfacing with the pilots mind in some sort of way. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_(Star_Trek:_Voyager)

Now THAT is how the Navy this country needs and deserves should be, and how our armed forces in general should advertise. No it's-ok-to-cry or inclusivity bollocks just pure baddassery and military might
