In supply chain, a lot of businesses have a clearly defined unspoken social construct. If you don’t fit in or someone high on the ladder doesn’t like you; no matter what your work ethic is, you will not be considered for promotions.

I am currently in this boat and its demoralising as I have a higher degree than the bosses who have decided that no matter how hard I worked deliberately set me up to look like I am not good enough. I asked for feedback and none makes sense, as the feedback from the design makers do not match the ones given by colleagues I work with day to day.

Good advice, with one caveat: If you do what the boss says you need to do to earn the promotion, but then the boss spins that into a negative on your next review, then the problem is probably that you're already overqualified, and the boss sees you as a threat. Becoming more overqualified will not help. It's time to find a new job.

He essentially said keep taking balls to the face until someone gives you a shot. Completely disregarding how unfair the workplace is. Most promotions are based on work relationships and not merit. Many say its not "what you know" its "who you know". I've seen several people get promotions that didn't deserve them and others that constantly got looked over that deserved it. Nepotism is real. Dont fall for the work harder trap. Doesn't work for the overwhelming majority of people.

  • @milesmayhem5440

I remember a few of my friends and I being disappointed not picking up corporal, so I did as many extra courses as I could, worked hard to improve my PT and rifle scores, kept my mouth shut and stayed quietly motivated. I eventually promoted to corporal and because I put in the extra work I promoted to sergeant in nine months after picking up corporal. Ahead of many of the other Marines I came in with at the same time. I wasn’t really any better than they were, in fact a few of them were natural PT studs and others typically did a little better on the rifle range than I did. But the extra effort made the difference. Plus at that time they lowered the cutting score so the extra points payed off earlier than I expected. For me the real victory was the promotion to sergeant because I was not expecting it.

Two issues at play on 'didn't get it' - The first one is the interview dimension that can easily become, as you point out, a *content* focus leading to the question: "What documentation, what award, what accomplishment do I need for the recognition I seek?" So often we miss the point you raise here: "What is my *process* perception? How can I handle myself in the course of consideration, what can I do to demonstrate the highest level of self-management within the review process itself?" A key objective regarding the actual process is not *overtly* pushing/trying too hard, but maturely coming back with steady focus, balanced remarks, and little, if any, talk-pressure about yourself. Any discussion should always address the team objectives of the moment - just as in the field. Winners manage the *how,* - leaders are deeply, negatively sensitized to those lingering/stuck too long on *what* and *self.* When Jocko says "Good" he shifts at that moment more deeply into the real game at hand - the process - Thanks, Jocko-

In every job you will probably be passed over. There are several reasons why. One is that another boss/manager needs to get rid of a person but they have years in. Two is that your boss didn't feel you were right for it. Third is how do your co-workers feel about you? Are you a pain in the ass, do you ask people to do something that you could easily do yourself, and how do you present yourself, I mean by clothing, the smell you put off, your breath. I worked around a guy that was qualified but he wore so much cologne that it drove everyone else crazy. We just didn't want to smell him anymore. He quit after being passed up.

It's not this straight forward. There are always cases where some people def get things and they really don't deserve to get. When the boss has a personal grudge against you it makes it really hard. I finally got a promotion this year after 3 and 1/2 years but was it made very difficult and missed out the first time round, despite great feedback from others in the team as it was up to the boss to make if move forward. It feels as though wouldn't have been promoted but they had no choice in the end as couldn't leave it or would look bad for them. I also made it known that is a problem. I think the word got to him as he gave the others who got promoted a congrats call where as I didn't get one.

Jocko, I have been listening to you for a while, and I agree with you on quite a lot, BUT you don’t know what your talking about! Your analogy about yourself does NOT work for not being promoted. You were changing from “Enlisted to Officer/Commissioned”, too different. I was passed over four times for promotion from E-4 to E-5, twice because my 1SG didn’t like my PLT SGT (same guy twice). So when that PLT SGT left I went again, ( different guy) 1SG wasn’t there, another Company’s PLT SGT was there, I passed the board, but when my 1SG returned a few days later he rejected that board. I changed Company’s, and was deployed to Iraq, a Combat Board was happening, and I was sent. GUESS who was promoted to CSM ( Command Sergeant Major from 1SG), yep that same 1SG that turned me down three times already! Yep, I didn’t even get a chance to answer questions! MF’er just said I wasn’t welcome, and dismissed me. My new 1SG & Squad Ldr both objected, didn’t matter. DONT tell me you understand, because you wrote about it in your book! You don’t know!

I heard that the situation on the Theodore Roosevelt is ongoing and there are crew members who tested negative at first and then tested positive. I don't know if anyone has any insights but I just wanted to say: IF they're testing for anti-bodies and not the virus that might be the reason why they're seeing that. It takes time to develop anti-bodies. But you can test for the virus directly which should give you results faster than the anti-body test. The news article I read was not specific. Anti-body tests are most useful for contact tracing, not for diagnostics.
I was trully sorry to hear someone actually died. Initially it seemed like it was all mild cases. I know I can't do much about it, but I just wanted to say that. I really think they need to focus on convalescent plasma treatments, especially in situations like this. I said that before, but just in case, thought i'd say it again.

    You likely won't.
In my 20+ years in corporate America it's become a literal joke that if you have ANY military, you get the promo.
We have an odd fetish with causation = correlation and the military.
By far the WORST leaders I've had are shithead ex military that got fawned over cause they got through the easiest job interview on the planet.
Buck up, little soldier. You'll get that promo. Just shop it around to a couple more dip shit execs. They'll go hook line and sinker for the outfit.
    Always do.
