Good advice, with one caveat: If you do what the boss says you need to do to earn the promotion, but then the boss spins that into a negative on your next review, then the problem is probably that you're already overqualified, and the boss sees you as a threat. Becoming more overqualified will not help. It's time to find a new job.

Two issues at play on 'didn't get it' - The first one is the interview dimension that can easily become, as you point out, a *content* focus leading to the question: "What documentation, what award, what accomplishment do I need for the recognition I seek?" So often we miss the point you raise here: "What is my *process* perception? How can I handle myself in the course of consideration, what can I do to demonstrate the highest level of self-management within the review process itself?" A key objective regarding the actual process is not *overtly* pushing/trying too hard, but maturely coming back with steady focus, balanced remarks, and little, if any, talk-pressure about yourself. Any discussion should always address the team objectives of the moment - just as in the field.
