I gotta 2000 Ford Expedition XLT with a 4.6 Triton V8 engine. My family has had it for around 19 years and the only major problem has been the transmission breaking but getting it replaced was well worth. Runs great and wouldn’t sell it for the world.
Well in the 10 months since I posted this comment the engine started ticking. Probably happened around a month ago, it’s lifters. Put some thicker oil and Lucas oil engine stabilizer in. Just gonna baby it as much as possible till the engine goes. Though if it does go we’ll probably get a new engine with the amount of money we’ve put into it

I bought a 2001 Eddie Bauer 3 years ago 114k miles. Fantastic vehicle. 3 things that go wrong. Fuel pump in tank will go out especially if you let gas get too low as fuel cools the pump. Heater core some leak, have to pull dash back for replacement. Spark plugs some times back out with the coil. Older ones had only a few threads and could strip out. I prefer this first gen Expeditions as I like the rear solid axle. I highly recommend the Expedition.

I remember when my mother purchased this vehicle when It first came out. I felt so cool.. then I remember someone hit our car. I was like 11 years old when it happened.. they hit our car and drove off. ZERO damage to the vehicle lol
That middle piece up top is your 2000's navigation tool. It tells the inside and outside temp, shows which direction you're facing N,S,E,W-NW,SE, and I believe shows your current elevation. I own a 1998 Expedition I've owned for almost 5 yrs, I only paid $1000 for it and the only issues I had ( besides gas ) was I replaces the braking system ( rotors and pads ) replaced the a/c compressor, purchased 4 new tires, and basic maintenance.. But that was all thru a period of time and it still runs very well, just guzzles gas like a pure alcoholic lol.
Love my 1999 expedition. 163k miles. it has run into some problems but I'm planning on fixing the interior problems like broke door lock and coolant flush myself, but leave steering and suspension problems to the mechanic. love the 8 seats. ive had a lot of fun and good memories carpooling with my friends to color guard competitions in my last year of high school. but since then, i haven't used as much. i think I'm going to remove the read seats just to save on weight. mpg does suck obv, but I'm pretty light on the accel and i usually bike to places within 3 miles so it's not a big deal. biggest problem so far is that the sunroof is stuck open so I'm about to remove the roof liner and fix it myself
Here is some GREAT advice. Buy top of the line coils & plugs. That motor will purr like a kitten & never throw a code. 413K miles on mine. Bought it new.
I bought a 99 exp. For 800$. Replaced all the air stuff for conventional. And put new tires on it. 232k. Everything works. I'm less than 1500$ into this rig. No dents. No rust. XLT 5.4. I love this thing
Bought a 2006 in 2020; replaced literally everything below the floorboards, overhauled the engine top end and timing, 16.5k in parts. It is mechanically brand new with upgrades to suspension for a total of 19,000 it's just 'like' new. 199k just now, looking at paint this winter (2023). A new one in it's trim is 83k.
For 1300$ you got a solid vehicle. Props man. Picked up a 97 xlt 4wd 4.6 (does not have 3rd row) for not much more $ . Had to due some suspension work a new radiator & flush out some bigger a/t tires. She’s been solid otherwise. Does everything I could ask of her. No lights on of any kind and seems to run fine. 201,000k miles
Bought a 98 Eddie Bauer 4.6 with 192k for $1800 a year ago . Has been running atleast 8 months of that time with a blown head gasket with no problem whatsoever . Daily driver that drives all over the state of florida doesnt mix coolant with oil and doesnt even lose coolant lol just a slight misfire for 5 seconds on cold starts . Can't kill it !
Pete 's carport. I'm planning get a 2000 expedition for $3k but had 245k miles on it. But it's in good shape good body paint, 1 owner IT LOOKS GOOD. I Have not tested it yet. What would you recommend me?
I have a 98 expedition xlt, around 215k miles and it runs great only real issue 2ith it right no2 is the ac compressor and the thermostat. i learned to drive in it and its my first car after i got my liscence. plan on keeping it for as long as i can and i have plans to build it up nice
I spent 2500 with parts and tools to do some of the work I did and a few hours of work on a 2000 Eddie Bauer edition with the 5.4l 4WD with the touch screen stereo mach speakers leather with no tears except in the driver seat 140,000 miles from a private seller has the 17 inch aluminum rims with bridgestone all terrain tires
Bought one for 1300 couple years ago with 209k i got 250k on it now. Yes ive had to put money in it but id say its been worth it. Its my work truck now . just keep clean oil after 3k miles and engine will last forever. My most expensive fix is a intake manifold that are notorious for them because they are plastic and develop a bad coolant leak.
Bought an 01 in 2018. Got some good toyo tires, leveled the vehicle. tuned up the engine. Took me across the US from NY to CA visiting cities and the grand canyon without any problems whatsovever. Quite the needle in the haystack for me and only paid 1600 bucks. Once in CA i noticed the transmission was gonna start slipping and unfortunately that was the end. But I was glad that Expy lived to its name with that trip. People just gotta keep looking and be patient when shopping for these particular vehicles.
I just picked up a 1998 Expedition XLT 4.6 for $1800, with 222,222 miles for local to and from work. Took it to the mechanic needed a right wheel bearing and new driver side power window regulator.
My dad who no longer drives gave me his 2000expedition . It has 125,000 miles and those are his miles. Its like new inside. Runs great . I got lucky for sure . My F250 super duty 4x4 has 307,000 miles and still kicking lol. Hopefully I'll get that from the expedition.
Please make update videos of upgrades and engine clean up! I just picked up a 1997 Expedition with the 5.4 for $400 bucks and plan to get it cleaned up for "farm" use.
I have 2004 4.6 two valve,101k miles when I bought it in Oct.2011 The only issue was one of the spark plug popped out.I fixed it for $65 . After 20k miles it started leaking so I removed and replace it again. It was easy to replace that . Now it still runs like a dream at 126k miles,Planning of selling it soon for a newer body version 2018 model.
Up until 2005 they also built one on the F250 chassis. If you are looking to buy new used, look for a 2011 Why? No recalls. Mine is a 2002 and have kinda converted it to a camping rig. Rear seats come out easily, (I might be willing to sell them.) I have a car fridge and a microwave. Havent decided about the microwave. Have a 2000kw inverter that I made a place for under the central console one thing I don't like is there no way to open the back from inside; good and bad, If you are camping in it ya gotta get in and out the passenger doors. But if you are hauling little ones, that is another subject.. I take mine off road and no problem.
Pete’s Carport honestly I haven’t had to replace anything, all the electrics still work, the only issue it’s had is the ignition coil clip snapped and won’t stay secure. I just went to a scrap yard got a replacement so I’m gonna replace that today.
I just bought an Eddie Bauer Ford expedition and it will tell you on that little display board on the top of the truck. How many miles you have left to empty it will tell you if you’re going north south east or west and tell you the degrees outside.
Ive got a 2002 eddie bauer expedition with the 5.4 from my brother. The aluminum heads are the only problem and thats only because theres only 4 threads on the spark plug hole. Mine blew right out of the top for some reason 😂 working on getting it fixed. Its got nearly 230k miles and should last much longer in time!
The thing in the front that you asked about is like a digital compass, and it tells you how many miles worth of gas ⛽ you have. Example, 103 miles to E. I have an '02, and I LOVE IT! Of course just be prepared to change out the HARD TO REACH spark plugs & coil packs every now & then. 😩 Also Idk why, but the window motors are known for going out. 😒
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my digital compass is not functioning. But yes I have changed our the plugs and coils before. Not the worst job I've done. I can tell already my coils need changed. I get that shutter feel at certain speeds.
I regret selling my 98 expedition had the 5.4 with 2wd, Awd, 4hi, 4low options beast of a truck 💪 would only buy another one if it was super clean because it's hard to come by them
i have a 1997 that i pad 2k for and have another 3k in new parts that i am adding slowly. it will be one of the best looking and performing expeditions on youtube. i have over $500 in just led bulbs. over $500 in decals. a lot of money throwed into it but i wanted to build something different that everyone else, it is a harley davidson replica.
I got one for 800 still have it replaced 2 rear ends only. We had it for 4 years now still running and working. The only issues is the windows, interior lights, radio power not working electrical issue.
5.4L - 413K miles. It enjoys oil & demands you use top of the line Coils. Do not use cheapies. Your reward : That 5.4L will purr like a kitten forever.
This SUV was a big seller and has plenty of repalcement parts in the used car yards. Stay away from air suspension. They are usually toast after 10-15 years. You could probably find spring suspensions in the junkyard if you are a DIY guy and replace them for $400 bucks and your labor. If you find one that has been owned by the same person for 15 years or more ,he should be able to tell what has been replaced. Climate control can go bad but there is a seal repair kit you can buy online and repair. Expect to replace things like fuel pump, water pump, alternator power steering pump. Knowing the transmission has been rebuilt is a big plus. Working AC is unlikely but you might get lucky if the owner took excellent care of it. The engine will last forever if you replace the oil at least every 5K miles. I knew a guy who had a Ford pickup who replaced oil meticulously and put 1000k miles a week to and from work. He had 600K miles it last time i saw him when he retired. There have been three of these in my family in the last ten years.
I can’t be the only one who prefers cloth over leather. Leather gets too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter plus it starts to crack after about few years. Cloth is just easier to manage
@@petescarport I have one with 157,000 and it’s running kinda iffy right now cause it has a hole in the cat I assume after I fix that it should run pretty good have you had any problems with anything so far?
I changed the alternator. Took 15min and cost about $60. I would check the coil packs. They are a very common failure and cause hesitation and sometimes they will cause jumping almost like a slipping transmission
Absolutely if you get a good deal. I wouldn't pay more than $3k and if it needs anywork I would look at another one. There are a lot of them out there. Also make sure transmission is strong and engine sounds good.
Does anyone know of a garage that is pretty honest in the albuquerque area and that does real good work. I have an expedition that needs motor work. I replaced the transmission about 6 years ago and right when i purchased a new set of tires the motor started giving me problems. This vehicle has always been an extremely dependable ...thank you
Thks for sharing... I live in the Midwest..You will NEVER find a truck like that for that price.. $1300?? Maybe $5200..🤔Oh he said it was Part of a Trade in? Ok ... GOT IT😉 that's why the price..
It's not that they were replaced my moms truck had all new plugs in it n one day it sound like a shot gun went off blew spark plug out.. crazy it started to do it to all of them over time... after 5 we gave up.. apparently it wasnt enough for a recall but the heads werent tapped far enough on some n that led to spark plug not going down all the way.. but I are right with 200,000 miles I think tour safe. Looks great too
it worth it'' but keep in mind after 165000'' or around, the manifolds bolts will break and that ain't cheap 2 fix ' mine has 230000' miles and my manifolds broke but for a $1000 i had them fix'and now it runs at a smooth idle' but at normal temp when i hit the gas ,it shakes real bad' i replace the map censer' and it still shakes' and then i replace the cat's and same thing'. so i don't know if i should rebuild the motor or find somebody who,s has one!! mine,s a 2007-EL"
Ironically I'm filling it right now. I rarely fill my cars since I don't let them get that low. I also ok only use 93 octane in my v8 and performance cars. Price is $2.40 gallon and cost me about $47 to fill
Oil filer adaptor o-ring style gasket between coolant and oil will leak, fairly inexpensive replace. here is a video link explaining it, I replaced mine about 8 years ago, thought it was the oil pan gasket, it was not. th-cam.com/video/Vet92uC_Eyg/w-d-xo.html

But that was all thru a period of time and it still runs very well, just guzzles gas like a pure alcoholic lol.
I have a 2004 EB with the 5.4 that has 364k miles and it runs great. The transmission has been replaced and it has had oil changes every 3k miles.
Just picked up a 2001 Ford expidition for $1,500 in cali. I always have a mechanic do a 50 point inspection on my new cheap cars
Wow, we have exact the same car. Mine is at 195k km now. i bought it last 2017. still runs great with few issues. engine is 100 percent good
I bought a 99 exp. For 800$. Replaced all the air stuff for conventional. And put new tires on it. 232k. Everything works. I'm less than 1500$ into this rig. No dents. No rust. XLT 5.4. I love this thing
I'm in the market for this one 4.7 litre,Year 2001. Same in white with beige leather.. I'm looking forward to this vehicle.
I’m 16 and I have a 2000 expedition and I love it so much
Bought a 2006 in 2020; replaced literally everything below the floorboards, overhauled the engine top end and timing, 16.5k in parts. It is mechanically brand new with upgrades to suspension for a total of 19,000 it's just 'like' new. 199k just now, looking at paint this winter (2023). A new one in it's trim is 83k.
I have a 2000 Expedition with 214,000 and is still running strong.
I just bought a TOYOTA PREVIA for 1200 with 210k miles but it drives very smooth is 30yrs old but no shakes at all
Bought a 98 Eddie Bauer 4.6 with 192k for $1800 a year ago . Has been running atleast 8 months of that time with a blown head gasket with no problem whatsoever . Daily driver that drives all over the state of florida doesnt mix coolant with oil and doesnt even lose coolant lol just a slight misfire for 5 seconds on cold starts . Can't kill it !
Has anyone ever told you your voice sounds like Chris Fix?
No but thank you 😊
Bruh what are u doing here
Pete 's carport. I'm planning get a 2000 expedition for $3k but had 245k miles on it. But it's in good shape good body paint, 1 owner IT LOOKS GOOD. I Have not tested it yet. What would you recommend me?
@@DavidGarcia-re9qh no not for that price
@@kensiie.3341 What PRICE WOULD be fair for you? I can make an Offer. What do you think?
How much was the gas from that trip
@@SoloMarcoPolo it was around 500 bucks. We didn't plan the grand canyon trip once we got to flagstaff, AZ. So could have been less. Cheers!
Nice 👍 for $1300.My '99 was $1600.Got 307,500+ miles but runs great.
Did catalytic converters still work after that mileage
Have a 2000kw inverter that I made a place for under the central console
one thing I don't like is there no way to open the back from inside; good and bad, If you are camping in it ya gotta get in and out the passenger doors. But if you are hauling little ones, that is another subject..
I take mine off road and no problem.
I just bought a 300k mike 1998 expedition Eddie Bauer about 3 months ago and it’s been doing amazing they asked 900$ for it
What a deal. Even if you just used for hauling or had to change our transmission and motor it is a deal
Pete’s Carport honestly I haven’t had to replace anything, all the electrics still work, the only issue it’s had is the ignition coil clip snapped and won’t stay secure. I just went to a scrap yard got a replacement so I’m gonna replace that today.
I bought one for 800 about 2 months ago, fuel filter, iac, fuel pump relay and a full fluid drain and fill and its a champ honestly
I bought a '00 Expo with 250k miles. Drove it 32k miles with no issues, then sold it when the wheel bearings started to go out.
I picked up a 98 Expedition 5.4L V8 2V 190k miles, misfire on #3 so far been okay since replacing the spark plug and coil.
Buying a same one tomorrow with 200k mileage but it’s green . Look forward to my first spare car . They are asking 1700 but I’ll offer 1500
Just bought 2000 Eddie Bauer edition with four captains chairs. Paid $1,000. Has new battery 4 new tires and very cold AC
Also Idk why, but the window motors are known for going out. 😒
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my digital compass is not functioning. But yes I have changed our the plugs and coils before. Not the worst job I've done. I can tell already my coils need changed. I get that shutter feel at certain speeds.
Picking up a ‘99 with 165k. $2700 California market. 4x4 which was a must. Same seats as yours. Converting it to an overland/camper.
Sounds amazing
Excellent review THANK YOU!!!
I regret selling my 98 expedition had the 5.4 with 2wd, Awd, 4hi, 4low options beast of a truck 💪 would only buy another one if it was super clean because it's hard to come by them
Did you ever have to switch the cats because of wear and tear

Oh I see, I’m looking into buying one tomorrow for about 1300-1500 with 278k miles and I’m hoping they will still work lol
i have a 1997 that i pad 2k for and have another 3k in new parts that i am adding slowly. it will be one of the best looking and performing expeditions on youtube. i have over $500 in just led bulbs. over $500 in decals. a lot of money throwed into it but i wanted to build something different that everyone else, it is a harley davidson replica.
Good job
i'm grabbing an 06 soon with my fiance because i need an easy ride about a mile a day to work i feel pretty confident in it
Yes. I had an 05 navigator that never let me down
I got one for 800 still have it replaced 2 rear ends only. We had it for 4 years now still running and working. The only issues is the windows, interior lights, radio power not working electrical issue.
Nice truck!
Just bought a 02 with 130k miles for 1900 in really good condition
Wow insane deal
About to go look at this 99’ Eddie Bauer Expeditionas we speak. I’m a Chevy man but for my son. Ty
I have a 02 4.6l with big tires and a flow master!! Paid 23 for it years ago drives like beast till this day!!
I just today got a 99 with 182000 an new tires 4x4 for 800 from my nephew. I'm a dodge guy but I like Ford also.
I bought a 97 used 2 years ago now has over 250k and run like the day it was pulled off the lot minus the air suspension . lol 😆
I can’t be the only one who prefers cloth over leather. Leather gets too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter plus it starts to crack after about few years. Cloth is just easier to manage
Just got one of these bad boys for $250, only thing is the engine is sluggish with acceleration, but that’s nothing a 5.0 swap can fix
Can you do an update on this vehicle? Just picked one up for the same price and am interested in how yours is going.
Yes. I did plan another video but was working on project. It now has 211k miles and runs strong. You can't kill them.
@@petescarport did you ever put a lift on like you mentioned or did you decide to go a different route with the look?
@@lggsimpleguy I kept it stock because wife wants to upgrade to newer one and instead of spending money we plan to use this to tow or sell

I LOVE older trucks!!! Never will buy new, ever!!
Rear area is higher do to the big gas tank and full size tire under
I’m looking at getting 1998 Ford Expedition 4wd with 198,000 I hope it’s worth it
Absolutely if you get a good deal. I wouldn't pay more than $3k and if it needs anywork I would look at another one. There are a lot of them out there. Also make sure transmission is strong and engine sounds good.
I just paid 800 for one, rough shape but it runs great after a few fixes. Look at what I did a few comment ago, its awesome now.
"Basic gauges." What do you want, a back rub and foot massage. Gears, tach, speedo, gas, oil, temp, volts... it's all there easily readable.
Only thing really is those 5.4 have lots of trouble with spark plugs litterly blowing out of the holes
Yup my only fear with these engines. But I like that it has higher mileage. Usually means someone changed out plugs and they are good.
Looks great too
I'm looking a Expedition with a 5.4 with two wheel drive only?
they're great if you fix your own sh!t. Especially if you care not about cosmetics. My $1400 expedition has lasted 7 yrs so far.
I got mine for $800 with 170k and fixed the miss fire. Love it
I have two. A 2000 4wdand 1999 2wd
it worth it'' but keep in mind after 165000'' or around, the manifolds bolts will break and that ain't cheap 2 fix ' mine has 230000' miles and my manifolds broke but for a $1000 i had them fix'and now it runs at a smooth idle' but at normal temp when i hit the gas ,it shakes real bad' i replace the map censer' and it still shakes' and then i replace the cat's and same thing'. so i don't know if i should rebuild the motor or find somebody who,s has one!! mine,s a 2007-EL"
worth it if you are handy id say
Nice
How much is it to fill the tank in florida? I live in California and am curious.
Ironically I'm filling it right now. I rarely fill my cars since I don't let them get that low. I also ok only use 93 octane in my v8 and performance cars. Price is $2.40 gallon and cost me about $47 to fill
Pete’s Carport i own a 04 explorer and its $80 to fill up a tank in California
Wow. And worst part is they don't even have 93 octane. I'm only using 93
Pete’s Carport i like the expeditions and am planning on buying one. But california makes it hard to purchase one
I need help with my 2000 Ford Expedition. It’s leaking oil and mileage reader is out. Any suggestions
