    It's a stamper battery, the top half 'what you called crank' would lift the stamping heads 'what you called pistons' as it spun around, crushing whatever material was out in.
    The earlier ones had a furnace near by if they were crushing quartz to bake it which would soften the quartz, the later ones had hardened heads which meant they no longer needed the furnace.
    Great video , great looking river.

    Used to crush quartz to retrieve the gold
