In short - yes. We use it a few times a week for live production. It's been a fantastic unit and I'd strongly recommend it! Chris from Graham River Productions
Thanks - useful overview. After futzing with network for an hour my ATEM 1 is up and running. Great product for sure. Thanks for the overview - I'm completely new to video switching so every bit helps!
The 1M/E looks simple but for those just starting out - buy a ATEM Studio. The TV Studio is a great 1st step. Like getting a new phone, going from PC to MAC, etc. - it takes time to learn HOW the unit thinks. I really appreciate the video you posted - my concern is - people will buy one of these thinking that any kid can get it setup and run it Friday afternoon for a Friday night shoot! If you do end up buying the unit - I suggest ATEM and this reseller but be patient and learn slowly!
@SpicyNachoFilms An external graphics solution like the Chyron does tie up two inputs for the fill and key signals. You could use a green background on the Chyron and do a chromakey on the ATEM and only need one input to be used. We are now using the ATEM 2 with 16 inputs since we ran out of inputs a long time ago!!
Hey Brian! My Non-Profit organization has bought Blackmagic ATEM 1 M/E production switcher for broadcast use. I am a complete beginner at it. Can you do a complete tutorial on how to do the keying and custom transition using the control software? I watched your video multiple times but am still not clear on how I am able to do this. Thank You Very Much for your support!
Hi, I saw your video, very nice! I have a question what is the difference between ATEM Production Studio 4K switcher and ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K. beside $800 price difference... ? I went to blackmagic website and can't find anywhere article what makes them different.. thank-you
Hello, I was viewing your review on the Atem 1 M/E switcher snd i like all the info you give on it. I recently got the same switcher and i am trying to connect my PTZ camera but unfortunately im not getti g any communication between both the ptz camera and the switcher. I am wondering how can i get the switcher to see my camera? My regular HD camcorders work great when connecting but i can't see my ptz . How do i solve issue if possible? Thank you
Thanks for interesting video. Was looking at buying second i5 PC with all the extras, the 4 way SD-HDI Blackmagic card (and using converters for HDMI->SDI) and Wirecast ... but may be cheaper to do vision mixing via this unit. Now a rather 'basic' question. How do you record the mixed output to hard drive? Does the 'recording' PC need a capture card? I am very much a "newbie" doing research into this topic.
Does the chyron tie up two HD-SDI inputs on the switcher? 1 input for fill and another for key? Are you limited to 6 inputs (4 HDMI 2 HD SDI) when using the chyron? Thanks
@nickshtam It's called a Chyron machine. It's also called "paint" or "character generator" too. Chyron is the most popular slang term for it, since they were the first company to made a name for themselves, producing live, video graphics.
Can this be done with just a laptop? Can I use the USB3.0 to feed a 3TB drive. If I want to use this to record a multicam shoot can I get by with 1 monitor for multiview and one monitor for switcher? Thanks for your help on these questions. Your demo was helpful and made me want to know more.
Hello, I was viewing your video and find it interesting. I have a question regarding connecting my PTZ camera. I have the same Atem 1ME you are showing and i am trying to connect my PTZ camera to it but for some reason when i connect the camera via SDI or HDMI my Atem does not see any video signal. I am wondering how can i get my Atem switcher to see the video signal coming from my PTZ camera? Your help is much appreciated. Thanks, Bernard
hi, Brian, i work with DTD Nigeria, we just purchase one switcher but are finding it difficult to record so i need to know what we can do. perhaps there is something we need to get
Is this the best switcher for live events or is there another one more appropriate for mobile productions? I only need a switcher for a four camera production and would like to record the switch.
I would like to use the ATEM 1 or 2 M/E to combine 4 Canon XF305 HD-SDI with MPEG 2 formats. Would it be possible to output one live MPEG 2 format with the HD-SDI outs? Thanks
Do you have to use the time code feature? I don't know much about genlock or timecodes etc, but I've read that the data video HS2000 portable studio that does similar things to this ATEM device doesn't require timcode/genlocky stuff. Can anyone clarify?
SIR PLEASE ADVICE IF I USE 1 SDI FILL AND 1 SDI KEY in atem 1 studio switcher i know that atem 1 have 4 hd-sdi inputs then how i use key -fill inputs please teach how i setup key fill in this switcher please give video demonstration of patching. thanks
You say you are using a chyron for the live graphics, is that a physical device or a software program running on a computer? I googled it and their website was very vague and uninformative.
desepcionado por que me e comprado un blackmagic tv studio y me vino dañado que pasa con esa crediblidad se esta cayendo los puertos dañados de un aparato nuevo

@SpicyNachoFilms Yes, audio is embedded on the HDMI and SDI outputs as well as the Aux SDI outputs.

Now that was a good demo. Any possibility of a "Part 2?"

Please please reply.

Can you bring a video capture of the computer desktop live with ATEM Studio ?
I have a question... How can I make sure that the production is being recorded in an external disk?
@gyulajoska Yeah, I had an email exchange with BMD on this issue. Supposedly, the update to enable the feature will be coming in version 2.5
