it's hard to explain but it has to do with how many horizontal pipes are on the way down the path you choose

Every horizontal path is taken. To make it easy, go from the end to the top, taking every horizontal along the way. Once a horizontal comes up, take it

It's how the colors were processed in the real GBA, some games were made to be very colorful so they were more visible on the GBA without backlight
