My truck was misfiring when everything was finished because I rushed and put the coils on wrong. All in all, took me a total of 12 ish hours of labor and I got this done with my family. I learned a lot about my vehicle and am happy I did this instead of taking it into the dealer saving over $300. Engineered Mojo thank you so much for this video. Keep making other people's day!

This video was 100% on track. Perfect details and to the point. Made the job super easy to follow along. I did have one problem that came up and I may not be the only person to experience this. As my truck is just about to hit 350,000 miles, when I was disconnecting the connectors for the fuel injectors, on every single on of them, the retaining tab to keep them locked in broke off. Touching them was just enough to do it! Looks like the mechanic who cleaned my fuel injectors may have experience this also. There was some gray material he placed into the connector to keep them together. Maybe some sort of silicone caulk? So now I don't want to leave these to chance covered by the plenum to come loose. Any suggestions? I hate to think of having to crimp new connectors on. But I can't just leave them like this to possibly fail.
Thanks for the solid video feedback :) Very common issue!! Haha, I actually ran across this on my older Honda recently. I ended up just buying a new injector connector i.e. the plastic head connector. Honda (and Toyota) have a special depinning tool to pop each wire out the back of the connector. No splicing is needed, but it is a delicate process if you haven't done it before. If you'd rather not do that, I've seen others ziptie or electrical tape around the connection after in place. They had no complaints at all
Glad it was right on time for your needs! It's a bit of a task, but not bad at all if organized and have some time on your hands. Hope the remainder of the install goes well!
I’m right in the middle of this project, about to pull off the valve covers I’ve been putting it off for four years but I decided to to change out the pcr valve and once I got it out the other half of the gromet had broken off into the valve cover I said to myself(it’s time) what a pain in the ass job

Very well done video. Audio is hoghly on point to! Theres another one of these instructional vids on youtube, but dudes audio was so trash my ears rang for 10 min. Thank you for your efforts, very well done. One quick question, sorry if i missed it but is it the same process for the other side?
Appreciate the feedback in the video! Honestly, I'm not sure. If in a pinch for money, I probably would personally risk reusing the half moons and caps given their under light install torque to begin with anywayd. However, I'd be nervous about having to do job over lol. Not sure if my nerves could take it
Great tutorial! If only my passenger side is leaking, can I get away with not removing the intake manifold? Seems like there is room to get it off with some finagling.
Update: I was easily able to do the passenger side by just removing the throttle body and leaving the intake manifold on. Saved a lot of time. Thanks again!
Very good illustration on how to perform a valve cover job with half moons and cam cover seals on a 3.4 ltr. Is there a good aftermarket gasket kit to get? Any aftermarket seals available that you recommend? I see you listed OEM part numbers.
I don't have any personal experience with aftermarket valve cover seals, but given the valve cover is under minimal torque force I wouldn't hesitate to buy aftermarket from a reputable vendor.
Well I am about to undertake this project and this was a very concise yet super helpful walk through. 1 question. I had the timing belt done by a mechanic 1 year ago so they Hopefully did the right thing and replaced the front cam seal. Because it is not part of this procedure I assume it will not cause a new leak since the front cam seal should of been properly seated the the sealant applied and torqued down properly or would you not risk it and take the extra step to also do the front seal?
I personally do not change the front cam seals unless I have a current issue or visually seals appear damaged. The chance of a leak is rare enough there that I take the risk not to go through that extra work. However, I don't blame those who do for any extra peace in mind they want
I'm doing this and I just broke the first bolt I went to torque on... This is so popped. I just ordered 16 new bolts, so now I gotta wait for those. Glad you were able to figure a solution with the tool break! I like craftsman given they usually have a lifetime warranty, snap-on is another good one, but expensive!!
I’ve got to clean my garage out in the front of my truck so I’ll have room to work. But I’m gonna do this gasket change. The left side is leaking quite a bit. Iv got another truck that I can drive if I need parts or something. Also I’m gonna charge the timing belt but maybe a little later. This summer.
Thanks for all of the very helpful videos including this one. How do you remove the front camshaft plugs, which are sandwiched between the camshaft and the timing belt backing plate? Do you need to unbolt all of the semi-circular holders securing the camshaft?
Glad the videos have been helpful! For the front camshaft seal, you do need to remove the front sprockets and timing belt backing plate. After that there is a special tool you can purchase that will have a small lip that fits underneath cam seal and will pull it out without having to unbolt all of the caps or remove camshafts. If you google camshaft seal removal tool, I believe the company is YSL that makes a tool. Should be a few other companies as well, hope that helps!
Great video. Any recommendations on replacing anything else while you’re in there? Had to replace mine soon and would like to get as much done as o can!

Hello, thank your for your video ! I'm a foreigner currently in Australie and I need to change my valve cover gasket, but I don't know where can I buy the parts. If you can help it will be kink, thank you.
@Engineeredmojo ! This video has been my guide line for my VC job! I’m currently in the middle of it. Everything is out and off the truck. However I’m having a hell of a time getting my spark plug tube grommets out. I’m assuming the job had never been done before, cuz everything is super hardened and gnarly. Any suggestions on removing the remainder of the plug grommet? The “meat” chipped off but I’m still working on the part that seats into the VC. Any input would be greatly appreciated! This video rules!!
You're pretty far along! I've used beedle nose pliers or a small flat head with the tips wrapped in tape to lessen chance of gouging VC surface to pry remainder of degraded seals out of their seated position, might be able to help depending how rough your seals are currently. Good luck and keep at it with the patience we all hope for haha 😄

To get a shop to do it probably between 1500 and 2000. Those were the estimate ranges I received. To do self install, assuming you have the necessary tools already, all parts were less than 200 dollars
Does removing the valve covers expose the water outlet? Like in the middle of the block.. cus ive heard that gasket goes sonetimes and have the gasket but only will replace it if i can do it without taking more crap off the motor to get to it,. Jusy did the timing belt so kinda at my limit on tinker time with this thing for a while…
I don't blame you, timing belt change is a process. If you are referring to the thermostat outlet, yes you'll have decent access to that when changing the valve cover gasket
Wow , I didn’t know it was that complicated, I didn’t think you had to pull the intake off , but I’m going to have to get mine done on my 2002 4 runner, I’ve got a buddy that was a mechanic at Toyota and has his own shop I hope he cuts me a deal 😳
@@ddemier , I did get it done my buddy couldn’t do it he was to busy, I took it to a shop down the street from me it was $ 750 bucks, but it needed to get done , just when I thought everything was fixed now a couple weeks ago the rear main seal started leaking 🙁 this is going to be expensive 😩
These do tend to come loose over time I have seen many be finger tight causing the leak after a year or two. I suggest adding a dab of medium strength loctite and not over tightening them like said but the loctite will keep them from backing off
@Levi Meyer you can leave the camshafts as they are unless you plan to install a new camshaft sprocket seal. I didn't perform that for my install, but some do perform that install at the same time. Hope that helps!
I noticed that your spark plug tube seals look a little bit different than the ones that you removed. Have they been working well? This happened to me as well and I was wondering if the dealer gave me the wrong part until I saw your video.
They've been holding up well so far. No leaks. I do know sometimes there are manufacturer updates to parts overtime as common failures are realized e.g. axle seal was different from original to when I purchased on recently. I assume that could be the case here, great observation and question. Had me thinking of similar past occasions.
Could have a bad seal around the spark plug tube seal that is leaking onto spark plug. For spark plug issues, I always swap plugs between cylinders to see if the issue switches cylinders. If it does then I know it's probably a spark plug issue. If not then it may be an issue internal to the cylinder
@imahitu there are two gaskets, in the video I am showing you just the one cylinder side. This is a v6 engine, so there are two cylinder heads. Hope that clears it up for you!
It says 53 lb-in. It's a measure of torque. Don't confuse it with lb-*ft* or you will drastically overtighten those bolts. You need a smaller torque wrench typically for lb-in values

@@dsa420meh7 wouldn't be a bad time to do that maintenance as well while in there, noted for myself for a future video!
Hello, thank your for your video ! I'm a foreigner currently in Australie and I need to change my valve cover gasket, but I don't know where can I buy the parts. If you can help it will be kink, thank you.
Online vendor is your best bet if you want OEM product
@@EngineeredMojobro! I got them out! Rubber mallet and a giant flat head…man thank you for the response, and most of all thank you for this video! I’ve learned watched you’re video prolly 20-30 times in the last few months, taking notes. Couldn’t of done this without you! Definitely the biggest job I’ve ever done on any rig 😅 cheers to you brother thank you so much
@@tylerb7198 awesome to hear!
Great video thank you! Super helpful
Glad it was helpful! Appreciate the feedback on the video
Here with a 04 tacoma with 334k miles hopefully i can get her to 500k and trade in for a new one
You have me beat by about 30k miles! Treat Tacomas well, they'll hit 500k on a regular. Good luck on the journey, I'm thinking similar. Hopefully, Toyota will have a solid EV truck option for me by then LOL
When you remove the coolant hose from the throttle body does it introduce air into the system so you have to bleed the coolant afterwards?
Only locally, so your coolant should self bleed through the burp valve on the cap
Invaluable, thank you….
Glad to hear!
Excellent, thank you!
Glad the video could be of service!
What's the torque in the camshaft?. Thanks great video ..
thanks for the video. how many gaskets for the intake manifold altogether? one upper and one lower? thank you!
what is the FIPG seal gasket maket (00295-00105) for?
Just the two plenum gaskets, I list the full part list in the video description with part numbers too
@@EngineeredMojo is that the silicone you’re using? it also comes up as a fuel pump gasket. thanks
Great video! Thanks man.
Glad it was helpful 😀
Would it be ok to clean the inside of the cover. Awesome video
For sure no problem at all to clean the inside, thanks for the video feedback!
@EngineeredMojo Thank you, also where do you recommend getting oem parts. I have a 96 and most dealerships don't have parts for it.
@@blastfromthepastttmscollec5775 I purchase from online, usually I can find oem through an online vendor like ebay or amazon
Is there a specific sequence when re torquing the valve cover bolts?
I typically do a cross hatch pattern working from the inside out when tightening. Reverse for removal
Best ever. Thanks!
No problem!!
What are you removing from the back of the motor 6min?
I’m about to get a used 1999 4runner how much would this cost including parts and labor?
To get a shop to do it probably between 1500 and 2000. Those were the estimate ranges I received. To do self install, assuming you have the necessary tools already, all parts were less than 200 dollars
Awesome video
Thank you for the video feedback!
You said reinstall the spark plugs... do these need to come out? Or did you mean spark plug wires?
Oh yes, I meant spark plug wires. However, since you're in there already, it may be good to swap and put new plugs as well
Why do you have to take the half moons out for the valve cover? I’ve never done them on a 3.4 before I don’t wanna screw it up lol
There is a sealant application there. You could leave them in, but there would be old sealant at those locations. Hope that helps!
Does the oem valve cover gasket come with both sides or just one ?
The website claims, Positions: Left,Right, assuming that means it comes with both sides
Wow , I didn’t know it was that complicated, I didn’t think you had to pull the intake off , but I’m going to have to get mine done on my 2002 4 runner, I’ve got a buddy that was a mechanic at Toyota and has his own shop I hope he cuts me a deal 😳
You have a good connection haha, hope your friend comes through! It is a bit of a task for sure, but with time not too bad
How much was the repair job?
@@ddemier , I did get it done my buddy couldn’t do it he was to busy, I took it to a shop down the street from me it was $ 750 bucks, but it needed to get done , just when I thought everything was fixed now a couple weeks ago the rear main seal started leaking 🙁 this is going to be expensive 😩
I broke a bolt on the coil pack when reassembling: it is recommended at 69 inch-lbs. Hopefully, this spares someone a little frustration.
Also this was a really helpful video! I appreciate how detailed you were in describing each step.
Appreciate the added value to the video!! This is good info. Glad the video was helpful to you as well
Thank you for the information
How do you remove the power steering pump and A\C connector wires?
No need to remove those components thankfully
These do tend to come loose over time I have seen many be finger tight causing the leak after a year or two. I suggest adding a dab of medium strength loctite and not over tightening them like said but the loctite will keep them from backing off
Ahh this is solid tip and advice, never thought about adding a bit of loctite
yeah and if you do see it leaking you can try tightening down the ones you can get to. Youll prob find a lot of them finger tight@@EngineeredMojo
How many hours does it take to complete full job ? Thanks in advance.
It took me about 4-5 hours and that included filming. I'd say a 2-4 hour job taking your time probably
@@EngineeredMojo thanks heaps for the fast reply I really appreciate it. Best video on topic on the net. Thanks again mate from down under.
Do you have a video for the driver side?
Did you have to take the spark plugs out?
I didn't, but if you haven't changed them recently, it's a good time to swap them out for sure
Thanks man!!
No problem 😊
Thank you!
Glad to be of service!
As someone who is in need to do this but is an absolute rookie with vehicle maintenance. Can this be done in one day?
Yes most definitely, I'd just plan for a full day so you can take your time with the removal of items
I just got off the first valve! Do I need to disassemble the camshaft bearing or can I leave it?
@@EngineeredMojo thanks. I will use them then.
@@EngineeredMojo just to be clear, was your tube seal part number 11193-70010 and was it a OEM part? Thanks!
What are the cam plug bolts torque
I have a question! I change my gasket cover and i have a misfire in cylinder 3 P0303 I didn’t have this issue before changing the gasket , anytip ?
Could have a bad seal around the spark plug tube seal that is leaking onto spark plug. For spark plug issues, I always swap plugs between cylinders to see if the issue switches cylinders. If it does then I know it's probably a spark plug issue. If not then it may be an issue internal to the cylinder
Check your connection to the fuel injector. Possibly bent a prong and isn’t making continuous contact
Check your connection to the fuel injector. Possibly bent a prong and isn’t making continuous contact
Also check continuity between each injectors prongs. This is how I diagnosed a bad injector.
What is the part number for those half moons or how do I order them?
It's labeled as semi circular plug in the tool list in the video description. I irdered those from my local Toyota dealership. Hope that helps!
@@EngineeredMojo thanks 👍
This was two years ago so you likely won’t reply to this comment in time but is it necessary to do the little half moon things?
@Rhecsh1t9845 not necessary but recommended since you’re already in there 😊
@@EngineeredMojo do they go bad or something? If they go bad what happens?
@@Rhecsh1t9845 it's more about once the valve cover is removed, the sealant may be compromised in some way
Im a little confused. I only saw one gasket removed when you took off the lower part of the plenum @6:15. But you said there was 2?
Is it just the one shown at 6:15 and the one from the upper section?
@imahitu there are two gaskets, in the video I am showing you just the one cylinder side. This is a v6 engine, so there are two cylinder heads. Hope that clears it up for you!
What are you removing at the 6min.
There is a bracket with (1) 10mm bolt I believe holding in a coolant tube
If you can pls take a second for each time you change tool so we can see what tool to use at different process.
Good tip and noted for my future videos!!
what is the bolt tightening pattern ?
In general start in the center and cris cross /alternate your way to the outside for tightening is what I follow
Just curious… what was the cost for all of the OEM parts? I know the gaskets alone are $60 each at the dealer.
I bought an oem package off Amazon or ebay. I can't remember which, but I know in total all parts were under 200 total for gaskets
The only thing you need to buy genuine Yota is the cam plugs..
fel-Pro blue gasket kit exceeds Yota
I spent like 200 for everything at the dealer .
the fel pro plenum gaskets are paper and not as good as oem or Mahle in my opinion.@@sbernardo8276
Going to know. I've got the blue fel-pro kit on deck red to go!
How much did total parts cost?
I can't recall, but it was around 100 dollars USD or less
Where are you located?
Having to use a 105 type sealant
Thx uuuuuu 😎
No problem! Hope it was helpful
One question should I buy new semi circular washers or could I use the old one ?
Soooooo, how do you know?
I never know...
How do you know
Great instructional video except for the annoying distracting goofy music
Lol notes on the goofy music, all feedback is appreciated!
Whats 53in lbs in ft lbs ??
It says 53 lb-in. It's a measure of torque. Don't confuse it with lb-*ft* or you will drastically overtighten those bolts. You need a smaller torque wrench typically for lb-in values
53÷12=4.4. I believe that's how you convert.
Bro a flowed ur instructions bro and and and
You might start off by saying WHY you are replacing the valve cover gaskets???
@kirbymoore492 it sprung a leak 🥲
