I don't necessarily know if it is a detective series, but I'm really interested in reading Alex Verus. Jim Butcher recommended it to me while I wait for the next Dresden book.

It’s awesome! I definitely love the character dynamics and the analysis of white and black mages in this series. I’m confident you will enjoy it

So many picks! Considering how much I LOVE Dresden I should really try more of these -- Alex Verus, Kate Daniels, Fetch Phillips and Shadow of a Dead God all seem well worth a try for me!

I'd highly recommend Skulduggery Pleasant... main series of 9 books, similar to Harry Potter it starts of more child friendly, with books 1-2 introducing the basic world building and character dynamics, but from the third book on it really starts to mature storywise

Wow. I've read every one of these except the last 2. I would also add the Iron Druid series, Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, and The Hollows series by Kim Harrison to this list. I'm happy to hear you talk about Ilona Andrews books. I love everything I've read by them, and booktubers never talk about urban fantasy.

I have been hearing you gush about all these series for a while now so I don't know why I haven't gotten to any of them yet, shame on me!!! Alex Verus and Fetch Phillips sound the most intriguing to me atm, but they honestly all sound like such entertaining and fun romps! Thanks for the recs 🤩

      @@AndrewsWizardlyReads that's a great idea!
I have to say, I credit Dresden as a major influence on me as a writer: not in terms of genre (I write sword & sorcery), but with regard to fast pacing and throwing more and more complications at a character.
At present I'm about 70k words into the 4th book of my Rosteval Saga, and I'm really feeling that influence. ;) My characters may not appreciate it, but I think it makes for fun story-telling.

Very underrated and only found on kindle cheap for 2.99-3.99 per book is Charles L Grant’s Black Oak 5 book series. More detective supernatural horror but still a good read. I need to add a good amount of these.
Also, Brian Lumley’s Necroscope is a vampire/sci fi/fantasy 14 book series thats criminally underrated.
Finally Hawk & Fisher is fantasy detective strictly by Simon R Green thats worth it.

    • @AndrewsWizardlyReads
      @AndrewsWizardlyReads  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I haven’t heard of Grant Black! I’m nervous about Brian Lumley. I’m a bit of a horror chicken 🐓. I just picked up a couple Simon R Green books :)

Hi Andrew. There's a series I've only read one book in that's fascinating and noir/urban-like in the storytelling. The one I rea is The Body Library by Jeff Noon, a Joe Nyquist novel. It has the feel of Twilight Zone or Twin Peaks. A body is found murdered; its' skin covered with words which are moving. Bodies disappear, then reappear elsewhere. It's mind-blowing, so creative and fun. There are 4 novels in the series.

    Thank you.
Mine essentials are Juniper Wheels by Charles de Lint and Duane Trelgade by Mercedes Lackey.
Technically Laurell Hamilton 's Anita Blake and Merry Gentry are urban Fantasy detectives too... But one is a fairy princess that is too bust getting pregnant and the other is tied to an incubus and tgd books deal with her feeding habits too much for my taste.

I just just got done reading the first book in The Iron Druid series. That book was definitely heavily influenced by Dresden. A book series that's not great yet but could get there is the Alex Stern series by Leigh bardugo

I can’t tell how loud I screeched when you mentioned October Daye. I love that series. It’s Irish and Scottish lore and I adore it. I love she also has a pronunciation guide even though I still be slaughtering those names. Dang my accent😂. I’d also recommend Kim Harrison The Hollows series not necessarily detective but she has problems to solve with demons elves and vampires. Also just started the Dan Shambles by Kevin Anderson- zombie detective. I’m enjoying it though I paused it to read a SciFi. Back to it then a horror I think. Plus this damn audiobook is taking forever (63hours). 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️
