    My great grandfather a sergeant and master tailor was here and only just survived. From what he said was that they were down to boiling the soles of their shoes. He was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the DCM for his actions here and at 3 other battles that he fought in and around the area. Also after they had been relieved at Ladysmith they organised the men into two groups. Those that were going to go home and those that were to ill to travel and be left behind. He was in the group that was to be left behind. He disobeyed orders and joined the line of men going home although the long voyage back nearly killed him.

    Excellent battlefield tour. I first became aware of the battle of Devon Hill when I bought Michael Barthorp's book on the Boer War about 30 years ago and the front cover featured Peter Archer's painting of the battle, which is now in the Devon and Dorset Regimental museum in Dorchester. Seeing you walking the terrain and explaining the battle was fascinating. Thanks!

    Just finished washing of the spear and now want to continue my journey from where the book finished. Can you recommend a good book that covers the what i want but includes the ❤boar wars. I’m back South Africa in 4 weeks so will revisit Fugitive Drift and then taking in Ladysmith etc.

    Hi how’s it going. Planning next trip down to Fugitives Drift in July, and looking to find somewhere 3ish hours South of Joburg to spend day and night before moving on, and I was thinking Ladysmith. Do you have any recommendations for place to stay and a 3/4s day trip (arrive from US via Uk in morning)

      Hi. I have stayed at Bullers Rest Lodge before and enjoyed it. Ladysmith isn't a beautiful town but the guest houses are decent and you have the battelfields from the siege etc nearby.

    • @redcoathistory
      @redcoathistory  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi John, thanks for that. I think the British troops were motivated by professionalism and love for the regiment and their mates more than anything else. The Boers certainly on an individual level were tough fighters and dedicated to defending their homeland - a worthy opponent by any standards.

      @Liverpool 11 firstly the boers never had slaves ,thay had workers who even got there own land.The English sure quickly took the mines ,even the qeeun crown diamonds comes from the Boer republic.There motive was not to stop slavery .

    • @bbtfan4617
      @bbtfan4617 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redcoathistory Actually, if anybody was 'defending their homeland' at that point in the war, it was the locally raised units of the Natal Rifles, Cape Mounted Rifles, Brabant's Horse and others made up of British settlers and emigries, and even Afrikaners who were actually loyal to the British Empire(yes, such actually existed, strange as it may seem).
