    I feel like Berry and I have my hanging out in my shop rebuilding this 59 bridgeport and I couldn't ask for a better tutor. HW machinery repair is hands down the best resource for information and parts. Every part number is called out as you go and they ship the OEM parts out fast and cheap. Heather answers my questions via email on things I didn't understand from the videos. I'm blown away by the setup these guys have for aiding a newbie through completely rebuilding a mill. Hats off to these guys I hope they make millions!

      Probably a common misunderstanding of the contents of WD-40. Lots of people think that it is intended to be a lubricant, including me for most of my life until becoming an engineer.

    • @HWMachRepair

      We have thought about doing something like that, the issue is that the noises don't come through correctly on a video.

    • @HowardWertz
      @HowardWertz 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@HWMachRepair That's unfortunate regarding the sound coming across correctly in the videos. At work, we have several Series One Bridgeports, each with their own issues! One however is making a horrible sound like the bull gears are clashing, but when the variable speed is cranked up, the sound lessens more and more. Could this be a simple adjustment, or do you think it needs to be looked at? Again, Thanks for all the great videos!

    My clone is all metric. I just had to match up the reverse pull knob threads because my pull handle was missing. It was a M4 x.7 I believe. Also the hole in the top of the micro screw for the reverse trip lever must have been a metric size. It was too small for the bridgeport replacement part. I had to ream it out to 1/4". So just a heads up for folks out there working on asian clones, that a lot of these parts aren't sae like the bridgeports. It will save you some headaches when ordering....measure first.

  • @philbuffone4474
    @philbuffone4474 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    During the inspection phase of this repair, I'm sure all the parts and pieces are measure for proper sizing. so, my question is what is the proper clearance between the quill and the housing (head)? what is optimal and what is excessive? Also, if the housing is out oftolerance what if anything can be done for a repair?

  • @chriscase9549
    @chriscase9549 ปีที่แล้ว

    Re: recoil spring: On my Comet clone I used my caliper depth feature to find the depth of the rivet head on the shaft. Then when I loaded the spring into it's housing I left the whole thing out about .100". It caught the rivet head the first time. My spring had broken diagonally near the inner end. I figured it was from having the inner end forced inward to catch the rivet, basically twisting the spring. I think the twist caused the diagonal break.

    great video--thanks for the detail. i did notice some chips and shmoo at 12:20 in the 3speed gear area. i have watched every one the videos multiple times. i think i can disassemble, clean and reassemble the whole thing in my sleep. i also notice that the only time you mention bearing orientation is on the spindle bearings. do other bearings (sliding housing, bull gear etc) have particular orientation. i am currently searching for suitable mill for my hobby use. would love to see rebuild of any other equipment--surface grinder, one the Lagun's omni present in several videos, lathes of any brand.

    • @HWMachRepair
      @HWMachRepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Charles, other than the spindle bearings, the bearing orientation dose not matter. We would like to do other machinery, it's just finding the time and having the machines in there to go some of them. Thanks for your suggestion.

    • @HWMachRepair
      @HWMachRepair  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the heads can be swapped out between a step pulley and a variable speed. Most people prefer to have a variable speed although I love my step pulley heads. You can turn your step pulley into a variable speed by just putting a VFD on it. We sell one for just $600 that uses your existing motor and pulleys. There are downsides to both heads when it comes to general wear and tear of certain parts. Please give me a call at 800-285-5271 so we can discuss this further. -Heather

    what work did you do to make this quill a "closed system" ?

    • @HWMachRepair
      @HWMachRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all in the spindle bearings. You can either use sealed spindle bearings or use the red grease that we use on the open bearings. Along with the shielded top bearing it turns the system into a closed system that you no longer have to oil. You can give us a call with any other questions if you prefer: 1-800-285-5271

    • @johnfurr8779
      @johnfurr8779 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HWMachRepair Ah I see, I had thought that the open bearings with the red grease did not qualify as a "closed system"
      Are the japanese bearings you use of a greater precision than the sealed timkin bearings? Or is there some other reason that you use these over sealed bearings?

    • @HWMachRepair
      @HWMachRepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnfurr8779 In our open bearings we use a high speed aeronautical grease. Once the grease is packed into the spindle bearing you can't use oil or it will degrade the bearing and cause it to overheat, that is why it's considered a closed system. We had a head come back in for work recently that we had packed 20 years ago and the bearings were still good. We just cleaned and repacked. We prefer the open bearings mostly because that's what we have always used. We carry both because we want to give our customers options.
