  • Using a CNC to draw some AI-generated artwork.
Drawn using black and metallic sharpies.
This was created as a test of a workflow from A.I. all the way to a final drawing. I made it during the holidays, hence the theme of the candy-cane forest.
    The workflow is:
    Midjourney - image generation
Adobe Illustrator - image trace (and lots of manual cleanup)
Inkscape & Axidraw utilities - filling in sold shapes with hatch fill
Reimport to illustrator and separate by color
Fusion360 - generate toolpaths for each color layer
Mach3/ Avid CNC 4848 Pro - Actually Draw
CNC machines are generally used as a subtractive process - they remove material from wood, metals, and plastics. Sometimes I don’t have work for the CNC to do, and I’ve always wanted to use it to make some big drawings.
The drawing tools are held using a 3D printed pen tool that enables consistent pressure against the drawing surface. Interchangeable pen holders enable easy, accurate switching of pens without extra alignment work. If you’re interested in purchasing one for your own CNC, you can find it here:

Thanks! It works great - after lots of testing and iterations!
