Awesome content. Can the Axum take tires comparable in width to the Ascension in order to add to the easier climb and flicky feeling that the Ascension has? Or I guess in order to not worry about the drag the wider Axum tires seem to create. Idk if that makes sense lol To make it feel more light trail suited as you mentioned at about the 13:30 mark

Its pretty simple to know what is a better bike. The Axum has a fully welded frame, 141 boost spacing, cassette vs a freewheel, wider internal rims, better geo, and a quick release rear axle. The only part the the Acension has over the Axum is the derailleur with a clutch, but everyone says the first thing to upgrade is the drive train. So its a mute point.
Very good rundown, the Ascension does have internal routing and a 31.9 mm seatpost as opposed to the Axums 30.8 if that matters?? But We agree, the Axum for the price is one MONSTER BUDGET TRAIL BIKE!
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS the acension frame has internal routing because the bottom tube isn't fully welded to the bottom bracket. Who designs a frame with only some welds. In this case the internal routing is a weakness and not a feature. Would it have killed schwinn to add another exit like the top tube and welded the bottom tube? The bottom bracket is a major stress point on the frame.. but they added a gusset to the head tube to the bottom tube so in their eyes it's OK. What a joke.. To me the frame is unsafe and should not be used.

Gentleman...you might want to double check your results, I believe you have a mathematical error...I believe the AXUM lost with a total time of 16:23, to the Ascension's 15:21...a little disappointed, coming from a AXUM owner...cheers!
That's interesting. I think it just rider "error". These bikes are so close to each other, I didn't think the difference between the two were performance related. If the differences aren't performance related, I don't know how it would play a part in the time. I'm genuinely interested cuz I have both and I need to return one.

If you plan on overtime upgrading to the point where it is basically the frame left, you have to ask yourself what's more important...the full internal cable routing of the Ascension, or the more modern head tube angle of the Axum...also I don't believe the Ascension has boost capable rear, if that matters to you.
@@EthaJee83 Actually, the slacker geometry and the boost is what's making me lean towards the Axum. I just hate the colors. I have the red Axum DP on the way. Maybe when I see it in person the color will grow on me. I'm also having a hard time finding a 42mm offset front fork for the Axum.
You’re correct. They totally botched the math and announced the wrong winner. The time splits at 26:11 make it easy to see the Axum was much slower, as expected, due to heavier tires that have higher rolling resistance and a more raked head tube angle causing more energy loss to the front suspension. The latter was made worse by the cheap lockout valve on the Axum breaking near the beginning of the video. More a little more tire pressure for the Axum and a working lockout would have made it a little closer race. Especially if you reduce tire pressure a little on the Ascension to give it a little more grip and a smoother ride.
This Ascension was in stock at my local Target and I bought one because mountain bikes are very hard to find and I couldn't find a different bike. I figured this would be a good upgradeable bike. When I brought it home and started putting it together I realized that the bearings in the steering head, the crank and the rear hub were all compromised because they were over tightened from the factory. So the bike was unridable from the beginning, when I did try to ride it it didn't shift well at all and the rear rim and the cassette where wobbly. When I did get a chance to actually ride it for a little bit I would go to pedal and the crank would slip like something in the rear end was loose or damaged in some way. I ended up returning it to Target and got my money back. I then found a Specialized rockhopper expert at my local bike store, the shop was extremely lucky to receive two of them and I was lucky enough to get one! The specialized rockhopper is extremely sweet I recommend you review one!

But it came with everything that I wanted and there's nothing that I need to replace if I bought an Ascension I would have spent probably equal to what I spent on the specialized to get it to where I want it. Wolfman has the time splits correct but has the totals miscalculated and flipped. I’m very surprised so many people are just blindly saying go Axum instead of listening to what you said about the climb on the Axum and seeing that every time split was higher on the Axum, especially the initially climb you said felt slower on the Axum. This calls for a redo guys. Let’s see the stock Axum DP vs the Ozark Trail Ridge and one other you think is too 3.

Have done some budget upgrades in the past. It’s boost spacing tho so budget forks are harder to come by. Maybe we can trade your boost recon fork for a non boost fork

Hi wolftick the problem with the ascension gears jumping they're probably not indexed properly out of the box I'm training to be a bike mechanic atm and we learnt about it today and had to strip and rebuild and index a rear mech
That's awesome man. We try to test the bikes the best we can without doing any work on them, until we start to upgrade them that is. Most people that watch our channel are not bike mechanics so we try to show the bikes as they will likely experience if they get one. After the Initial Impessions and Realtime Review we usually tune them or start upgrading. With these two bikes we have had a couple of extra videos that we needed to do while still stock before working on them. Hope this clears this up for you. We do things a little weird on our channel haha. I do have a question for you though. If you would watch the Sensah Install video and give your advice on why the chain is too long in 10th and too short in 1st we would appreciate it. Thanks
Tires can play into how a bike feels due to tire compound and tread. Bottom bracket height/drop and crank arm length will affect clearance and whether or not you have pedals strikes
The Medium Axum DP was the bike I was going to get before I ran across the 1999 Specialized FSR Sport that I have now. I was having trouble finding the Axum in stock. I believe you would be faster and more comfortable on the medium Axum DP.
I literally just came back from riding in Pocohontas state park trail Freightline. You mentioned not lowering seat where you wanted to on first ride. I ate complete dirt today on that course. Full of jumps and table tops and I forgot to lower my seat................I took the first big jump just fine but when landing my pants got caught with the damn seat and I couldn't lean forward or throw the bike away from me in the air 😬 A dropper post would have been nice lmao
OK, for a $30 difference it should be, like you said, a "no brainer". The Axum is the obvious choice. The Ascension is a good bike but it just irks me that it's so expensive for what it is, I don't think it's worth it.
Lol well slightly overpriced yes, but it is also sold in Target which is more of an uppity store, internal routing yes but no cassette? Should be about $50 cheaper. AGGREED
Oh yeah man, we have I think 3 or 4 tire vids for the 29er stuff and about 2 for the 27.5:) Now it just a matter of filming!! Def gotta get out the more time sensitive stuff first though.
I have both the 2021 Axum and Acension, both with the same grips/pedals and no other mods.The acension is definitely quieter on the trail and for whatever reason feels more lively. However the Axum definitely has more grip and the front lockout makes a huge difference. Straight out of the box the acension felt best to me however after just installing tektro hydraulic brakes and a shimano derailleur I’m going to try the Axum out this week. So far though I believe if I throw a fox fork on the acension and better brakes/tires the Axum won’t come close. Tough call but I definitely would be happy having only one of either of the bikes. Lucky to own both!
I have both as well and I want to return one. They're too similar to keep both. I'd rather spend the money on upgrades for one of them. I'm having a difficult time deciding though. If you did the same upgrades on both, wouldn't the Axum be better just for the slacker geometry and boost in the back? The way I see it, it's geometry and boost vs internal routing. Everything else can be added later. Internal routing being partially aesthetic the Axum should be the easy choice... I just love the way the Ascension looks though, and it's easier to find 51mm offset forks right now.
Well 9/16 pedals fit and when it comes to a fork the steerer tube needs to be a tapered one and you will also need a new headset. Checkout our video on the Schwinn Taff headset install to see what I mean, thanks man and appreciate you watching!!

My gf is good with computer stuff so hopefully she can help me out. Before I got my 2024 specialized rockhopper sport a few months ago I had a Schwinn ascension and I ran a lot of wheelies bike for long distances I spend 90% of my time on my bike on my back tire and do a lot of jumping but I tore the rear end bearings out in 2 months to anybody's going to get that bike I suggest getting a new hub first

You’ve got to cut the Axum seat post down a few inches. I’m only a couple of inches taller than tick so I know exactly how you feel. I’ve cut my post and the seat will drop all the way down. Now it’s perfect. Great video guys 👍

Out of the box I would say the Axum, it is just such a fun bike to rid but mainly because of the fatter 2.6 tires. The GT is second and then the Ascension.
Axum for the win... completely upgradeable. just need a front shock for my xc/mountain build. My second one is a urban/gravel style... complete with a Toseek carbon fork and thick slick tires

I have heard that the new red AXUM has a different geo. The new red's head angle is slacker. Someone should look into that. That would be a good comparison if they have different geo
It's slacker than the ascension. 67.8 vs 69 or 70, I can't remember exactly. I don't think it's just the Red one though. Edit: It may be just the 2021 models, both colors. I'm still waiting for a response from Schwinn as to whether the 2020 models are slacker too.
Great video guys. About get the Axum DP, I’m not so sure about, cause (I’m not sure about specs) if the Axum DP we’re equal to the Axum, being the only difference the dropper seatpost, it would be a smarter thing to do just get a dropper seatpost and add it to the Axum (this if the Axum were compatible with the dropper). IMO. But if there were more and significant differences between the Axum and the Axum DP, when comparing you can just tell us what are the differences (if there).

The Axum was only faster at the trail end going downhill gaining speed. This is probably a result of a more rigid frame and wider tires. The Axum is a more stable bike from what I gather.
I had the Ascension 1st and liked that bike but it kept trying to slip out from under me so I got the Axum and problem solved love the Axum. I've only upgraded the saddle and pedals so far.....great video....the Axum seems faster down hill then the Ascension to me but that's me
I just checked some BB Heights My GT Aggressor Pro stock - 12 inches My Schwinn AL Comp w/ 120mm Bucklos forks - 12.75 inches!!! Thats just too Damn high!!!
Here's my conclusion. These are two different bikes designed for two different purposes. The Ascension is an XC bike that's better at climbing. Which makes sense because it's IN THE NAME. Ascension means to ascent. It literally means to rise or climb. The Axum DP is a trail/DH bike. Hence why it has the wider tires, slacker geometry, dropper post and boost rear axle, for a sturdier chassis for DH. Maybe this will help someone who's trying to decide between the two. I'm 90% sure I'm returning my Ascension now. My Axum DP gets here on the 26th. Judgment Day lol. 😂

I just ordered a 2021 Axum DP red Medium frame!!! I am so excited to get it and ride it. I am 5'5 so the smaller frame and DP will help I think for me. I currently have a 2020 Aluminum Comp.

Love your videos! Just wanted to point out that on the Axum there are 8 characters including the two arrows on either side of the words/numbers . This is how you know what gear you're in. Each character corresponds with the gear! Hope this helps!

The red Axum DP is the "Beez 🐝 Knees". That's the bike I'm eyeballing the most. You'll absolutely shred on that thing given that it's the correct frame size for you.
The only feature on the Ascension is the internal routing. A mashup of these two bikes in my mind would be internal routing (Ascension) and a slacker geometry (Axum) and Boost rear (Axum). So a completely new frame.
Well damn, that didn't help my decision... Still leaning Axum DP for the boost rear end, bigger tire options and slacker geometry. Just going to wait for it to get here and look at them side by side, and just make a decision. Nice video as always fellas 👍
Wolftick science, I love it! Great vid! I guesstimated the Axum, it is an overall better bike! Not trying to knock the Ascension either it is an awesome bike! Great color scheme, internal routing, and good specs, but in my opinion it's a Boundary with internal routing. While the internal routing is aesthetically pleasing, it doesn't improve the riding experience! So paying $120 more than the Boundary I can't justify it! If instead of internal routing they put a dropper post, or 9 speed cassette, this bike is the "Cats Meow" and worth every penny! As always Great Work Gentlemen! Term paper completed 🤦😬😁

Yeah I really love my Ascension, but the Axum is looking like the one to get. For me it's the slacker geometry of the frame and the boost in the rear. I don't care about dropper post or cassettes since that can be added easily. If it weren't for the geometry and the boost on the axum I'd keep my Ascension.

This Ascension was in stock at my local Target and I bought one because mountain bikes are very hard to find and I couldn't find a different bike. I figured this would be a good upgradeable bike.
When I brought it home and started putting it together I realized that the bearings in the steering head, the crank and the rear hub were all compromised because they were over tightened from the factory.
So the bike was unridable from the beginning, when I did try to ride it it didn't shift well at all and the rear rim and the cassette where wobbly. When I did get a chance to actually ride it for a little bit I would go to pedal and the crank would slip like something in the rear end was loose or damaged in some way. I ended up returning it to Target and got my money back.
I then found a Specialized rockhopper expert at my local bike store, the shop was extremely lucky to receive two of them and I was lucky enough to get one!
The specialized rockhopper is extremely sweet I recommend you review one!

But it came with everything that I wanted and there's nothing that I need to replace if I bought an Ascension I would have spent probably equal to what I spent on the specialized to get it to where I want it. @@WOLFTICKVIDEOS There’s no way the Axum was faster in the climbs with those heavier and higher rolling resistance tires and more aggressive geometry. Wolfman has the time splits correct but has the totals miscalculated and flipped. I’m very surprised so many people are just blindly saying go Axum instead of listening to what you said about the climb on the Axum and seeing that every time split was higher on the Axum, especially the initially climb you said felt slower on the Axum.
This calls for a redo guys. Let’s see the stock Axum DP vs the Ozark Trail Ridge and one other you think is too 3.

Have done some budget upgrades in the past. It’s boost spacing tho so budget forks are harder to come by. Maybe we can trade your boost recon fork for a non boost fork

Hi wolftick the problem with the ascension gears jumping they're probably not indexed properly out of the box I'm training to be a bike mechanic atm and we learnt about it today and had to strip and rebuild and index a rear mech
That's awesome man. We try to test the bikes the best we can without doing any work on them, until we start to upgrade them that is. Most people that watch our channel are not bike mechanics so we try to show the bikes as they will likely experience if they get one. After the Initial Impessions and Realtime Review we usually tune them or start upgrading. With these two bikes we have had a couple of extra videos that we needed to do while still stock before working on them. Hope this clears this up for you. We do things a little weird on our channel haha. I do have a question for you though. If you would watch the Sensah Install video and give your advice on why the chain is too long in 10th and too short in 1st we would appreciate it. Thanks

Tires can play into how a bike feels due to tire compound and tread. Bottom bracket height/drop and crank arm length will affect clearance and whether or not you have pedals strikes
Well the tires felt very draggy? If that makes sense and drop? what is that...

The Medium Axum DP was the bike I was going to get before I ran across the 1999 Specialized FSR Sport that I have now. I was having trouble finding the Axum in stock. I believe you would be faster and more comfortable on the medium Axum DP.

I literally just came back from riding in Pocohontas state park trail Freightline. You mentioned not lowering seat where you wanted to on first ride. I ate complete dirt today on that course. Full of jumps and table tops and I forgot to lower my seat................I took the first big jump just fine but when landing my pants got caught with the damn seat and I couldn't lean forward or throw the bike away from me in the air 😬 A dropper post would have been nice lmao

OK, for a $30 difference it should be, like you said, a "no brainer". The Axum is the obvious choice. The Ascension is a good bike but it just irks me that it's so expensive for what it is, I don't think it's worth it.

Oh yeah man, we have I think 3 or 4 tire vids for the 29er stuff and about 2 for the 27.5:) Now it just a matter of filming!! Def gotta get out the more time sensitive stuff first though.
I have both the 2021 Axum and Acension, both with the same grips/pedals and no other mods.The acension is definitely quieter on the trail and for whatever reason feels more lively. However the Axum definitely has more grip and the front lockout makes a huge difference. Straight out of the box the acension felt best to me however after just installing tektro hydraulic brakes and a shimano derailleur I’m going to try the Axum out this week. So far though I believe if I throw a fox fork on the acension and better brakes/tires the Axum won’t come close. Tough call but I definitely would be happy having only one of either of the bikes. Lucky to own both!
I have both as well and I want to return one. They're too similar to keep both. I'd rather spend the money on upgrades for one of them. I'm having a difficult time deciding though.
If you did the same upgrades on both, wouldn't the Axum be better just for the slacker geometry and boost in the back?
The way I see it, it's geometry and boost vs internal routing. Everything else can be added later. Internal routing being partially aesthetic the Axum should be the easy choice... I just love the way the Ascension looks though, and it's easier to find 51mm offset forks right now.

Before I got my 2024 specialized rockhopper sport a few months ago I had a Schwinn ascension and I ran a lot of wheelies bike for long distances I spend 90% of my time on my bike on my back tire and do a lot of jumping but I tore the rear end bearings out in 2 months to anybody's going to get that bike I suggest getting a new hub first

Out of the box I would say the Axum, it is just such a fun bike to rid but mainly because of the fatter 2.6 tires. The GT is second and then the Ascension.
Axum for the win... completely upgradeable. just need a front shock for my xc/mountain build.
My second one is a urban/gravel style... complete with a Toseek carbon fork and thick slick tires

They messed up their conclusion. The time splits at 26:11 show the Ascension was faster, but they put the total times in the wrong columns.
I have heard that the new red AXUM has a different geo. The new red's head angle is slacker.
Someone should look into that.

It's slacker than the ascension. 67.8 vs 69 or 70, I can't remember exactly. I don't think it's just the Red one though.
Edit: It may be just the 2021 models, both colors. I'm still waiting for a response from Schwinn as to whether the 2020 models are slacker too.

About get the Axum DP, I’m not so sure about, cause (I’m not sure about specs) if the Axum DP we’re equal to the Axum, being the only difference the dropper seatpost, it would be a smarter thing to do just get a dropper seatpost and add it to the Axum (this if the Axum were compatible with the dropper). IMO.
But if there were more and significant differences between the Axum and the Axum DP, when comparing you can just tell us what are the differences (if there).
Only difference between them is the dropper post and the colors.

The Axum was only faster at the trail end going downhill gaining speed. This is probably a result of a more rigid frame and wider tires. The Axum is a more stable bike from what I gather.

Here's my conclusion.
These are two different bikes designed for two different purposes. The Ascension is an XC bike that's better at climbing. Which makes sense because it's IN THE NAME. Ascension means to ascent. It literally means to rise or climb.
The Axum DP is a trail/DH bike. Hence why it has the wider tires, slacker geometry, dropper post and boost rear axle, for a sturdier chassis for DH.
Maybe this will help someone who's trying to decide between the two.
I'm 90% sure I'm returning my Ascension now. My Axum DP gets here on the 26th. Judgment Day lol. 😂

I just ordered a 2021 Axum DP red Medium frame!!! I am so excited to get it and ride it. I am 5'5 so the smaller frame and DP will help I think for me. I currently have a 2020 Aluminum Comp.

Love your videos! Just wanted to point out that on the Axum there are 8 characters including the two arrows on either side of the words/numbers . This is how you know what gear you're in. Each character corresponds with the gear! Hope this helps!

The only feature on the Ascension is the internal routing.
A mashup of these two bikes in my mind would be internal routing (Ascension) and a slacker geometry (Axum) and Boost rear (Axum). So a completely new frame.

Wolftick science, I love it! Great vid! I guesstimated the Axum, it is an overall better bike! Not trying to knock the Ascension either it is an awesome bike! Great color scheme, internal routing, and good specs, but in my opinion it's a Boundary with internal routing. While the internal routing is aesthetically pleasing, it doesn't improve the riding experience! So paying $120 more than the Boundary I can't justify it! If instead of internal routing they put a dropper post, or 9 speed cassette, this bike is the "Cats Meow" and worth every penny! As always Great Work Gentlemen! Term paper completed 🤦😬😁

Yeah I really love my Ascension, but the Axum is looking like the one to get. For me it's the slacker geometry of the frame and the boost in the rear. I don't care about dropper post or cassettes since that can be added easily. If it weren't for the geometry and the boost on the axum I'd keep my Ascension.

Well man he swears the bike don't feel too big for him except for the seat post that we will be cutting down soon.😂 We will be getting the Medium DP version soon, I hope and then maybe we can just find out. Thanks👍
Great test between evenly priced bikes. Have you looked at the vitus nucleus? It doesn't need any upgrades until you break something.
