- John takes Mike on an unforgettable flight in his OV-10 Bronco, soaring over the Sierra Nevada in one of the most incredible aircraft out there. From exploring the Davis Fire burn scar near Reno to navigating the rugged American River Gorge and soaking in the breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe, this flight was nothing short of spectacular.
The OV-10 Bronco was built for adventure, and this flight proved why. Strap in and enjoy the ride!

This is absolutely one of my favorite aircraft. I couldn't imagine being able to say "Let's go fly the Bronco!"
Its still surreal for me too!
@@n665cc Where are you guys located? I’d love to pay my fair share for a ride.
@@BellyUpFishGarage John is one of the most generous people in the world, but the what I believe to be the exhibition status of the plane limits from certain”rides” we are located in the Tahoe area
@@n665cc Completely understandable. Maybe if I'm ever in the Tahoe area I'll see I could at least finagle a look at it.
@@BellyUpFishGarage 100%!
Fun fact: OV-10s are used by CalFire as Air Attack platforms that coordinate aerial firefighting resources. Their incredible visibility from the cockpit, long fuel cycles, and comms capability (air attacks have to be able to transmit one and listen to two channels each on AM and FM) all contribute to the OV-10's success in this role.
Thanks for sharing. I was curious about this .
We have 3 AM and 3 FM radios we monitor. On 2/3 AM's we can either have a freq. on standby or monitor and the FM's all have one freq on main and one on guard. Gets busy in the back but the ride and few are second to none!
@drewrhoads5395 👍I've been all over the fire world, but ACDP is the most I've done in aviation. Have known some great ATGSs though!
Living ~ 5 miles from a Cal Fire base, our neighborhoods are both apprehensive and grateful to hear them (along with the S2s) flying during the fire season.
@spikespa5208 I worked engines and handcrews in CA for a decade - and 2 ECCs located at Air Attack Bases doing Aircraft Dispatch.
We (Southern Sierra) ECCs launched aircraft (AA, 2 ATs, 2 Helos) on every reported fire during "high" fire danger, which was virtually all of summer.
The successes we do see (still around 96% initial attack success rate) during peak season are directly attributable to those aircrews.
Great video! Here's a trick I used while video recording in helicopters. Buy the smallest lavalier mic you can find. Take the lapel clip off and put the mic under one of the earcups on your headset. Plug that into your camera and you'll record all the comms both intercom and radio chatter without all the turbine and prop noise. Works great!
That was an awesome video, thank you so much for sharing it! My dad was career AF pilot. He was a Forward Air Controller in Thailand flying OV-10s. He had many stories about his time there. He retired after over 30 years. I'm a retired airline pilot and teach pilots to fly Cessna biz jets now. One of my brothers is a Capt for American. I hope one day to get a ride in a OV-10. I came close several years ago when we lived in FL near Space Coast Regional airport in Titusville. They were restoring an OV-10. I had a ride lined up with them when it was complete. But they sold it to one of the firefighting units there in Cali and couldn't allow any rides. UGH. Safe travels.
When I was assigned to the 2d Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO), this was a platform to parachute from. The jumpers would sit face the tail while sitting in the cargo bay. The Bronco would fly nearly vertical before the lead parachutist would release the safety belt. Because of the vertical trajectory, the parachutes would deploy open with the canopy closest to the ground and the Marine above, before swinging to normal descent of a parachute drop. This was eventually discontinued because, I believe, from a flaw in the static line anchor.
This is one of my favorite aircraft since it has great visibility, relatively slow flight speed, and terrific maneuverability - as seen here.
Now we see why it was an observation aircraft. It’s all canopy. Nice 👌🏼
What a magnificent aircraft!
Holy crap! I believe I saw you guys flying over the fire area! I was driving, thought it was a CAL-FIRE plane, but the gray paint made me wonder. Very cool!
Did not know the Bronco's engines were constant RPM type. Love that folding main gear action!
I had the good fortune to take a flight in an OV10 while assigned to the 22 TASS in Hawaii. It was a rocket run training mission over the Big Island. The pilot would dip down fire a rocket at a target on the ground and climb out. I do remember how loud the aircraft was and slow but, very maneuverable. The pilot also performed my 2nd reenlistment while in the air. Something I will never forget.
Incredible!
I have been working at TTSA on the end of 20 and I always take a moment to watch this beautiful aircraft flying. I would love to fly in an OV-10 at some point!
To me that is the perfect platform of plane for Fire Spotting and Recon for aerial drops!! Never flown one but know someone who flew it in combat and they couldnt talk enough about its capabilities!! To me it looks like a Rock Crawler 4×4 of plane that loves to get down and dirty!! My father was a Lt Col in Air Cor and Force WW2,Korea and Vietnam and said this plane made a huge difference in Vietnam. Beautiful areials shots of Sierras while flying!!
We live near Columbia near the air attack base and are lucky to see this aircraft fly over all the time about 260 mph. What a dream it would be to fly or ride in that incredible aircraft.
The view out of this airplane is quite remarkable.
Verycool! My dad was a backseater during Vietnam for a tour. Great plane!!
One of my favorite Unique designs.
I talked with John one time, super cool guy! I had a hand in his Bronco, OV-10D+ Bronco 155418, restoration!
Glad he’s having a great time with it, even better getting to see it fly!
OMG is the right reaction :) Thank you for such an amazing video. Seldom we see OV-10 footage with a unique sounds!
As a kid this AP was my favorite toy, growing up learned A LOT more about this plane and it really never got the praises it really deserved. It was FAST, very maneuverable, nimble and could and did carry a nice payload in ALL it missions. Still have the diecast of this plane, still love this plane. Congrats to have a chance to ride shotgun in the BEEUTIFUL BIRD. Never seen 1 fly so thanks for the video.
I’ve always loved the twins, B-25, P-38, A-10 and the Bronco.
I’m quite sure I heard at the 4:50 mark a faint “YEE-HAWW”,
Excellent video, thanks for taking us along.
Just an amazing aircraft. Listen to it , just sounds serious as he'll. I'm jealous, wish one of those two was me. What a machine. Thanks for posting that.i haven't had that much fun all year.
I worked for CALFIRE for many years. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity, to visit with Patty Wagstaff, when she was flying the Bronco, out of the Grass Vally Air Attack Base..
Very cool! what an aircraft, and very fortunate to get to experience it myself!
Got photos?
@@franklopez6349 Would have felt a little awkward asking her for a selfie.

Flying in thr Bronco is on my bucket list!
Man, that was pretty damn special! One of my favorite airplanes! So badass!
Oooo, I want to fly the Bronco. Amazing visibility, handling and power.
What a plane!!! Thanks for sharing.🤜🏼🤛🏼🙌🏼
Such an interesting aircraft but looks so much fun to fly imagine getting to say you fly a bronco like how cool is that great video
Worth every penny for that flight! I want one too!
On top of the world in that cockpit!
What a neat experience. Beautiful country.
Beautiful plane, beautiful video.
What a cool video. Great watching the Bronco flying. Thanks for sharing.
That was awesome! 🫡🇺🇸
Wonder if these guys will hire me after I’m done with the airlines. Relive my glory days when airplanes did something other than go straight. Great looking plane, and well flown!
Great flight and vid, thanks for sharing. What a lovely plane.
The OV-10 rocks!!!!!!!!
The visibility in that plane is incredible. I bet it feels like you could lean over and fall out. So rad. I want one. 😅
Fantastic visibility from that bubble canopy 👌🏻
Nice Nice landing!👌
Beautiful landing.
Super cool. Knew they were taking off from Truckee before the plane lifted off the runway.
Yeah. I have never actually been to the Truckkee Airport, but have driven past it hundreds of times, nice footage
I’ve been to that airport many times! If I see ya you’ll know it - I’ll be the guy with a bag of clubs giving you a thumbs up. 👍
I love these!
Nice ride!
Favorite plane for sure!
I probably jumped from this particular aircraft late 70s to early 80s when VMO2 was at campen, ca. Great aircraft.
That's one of the most unique aircraft ever and I'm just realizing that it exists 😢
IMO the best aircraft for fire air attack.
that canyon run must've been amazing!
Fast and nimble ! The power to weight ratio must be awesome in that quick litte craft !
Depends.
Most had 700s, some have 1100s.
Living the dream. Literally.
Fun I saw them fly over the lake a while back
That would be an awesome plane to fly. Pretty loud though. Not much insulation from the sound between the engine nacelles and the glass cockpit. Excellent view from the pilot's seat though.
I really like the up-to-date/modern instrument panel. VERY COOL !
It's so cute!
Very cool. Thank you for sharing.
Sweet airplane!
That was cool! Thanks for sharing
Bravo.perfect
I think I saw you guys the other day on flight radar that’s pretty cool
Amazing purpose-built aircraft, doing what it was designed to do. Such a privilege to fly along in it with you. Is John taking reservations?
THANKS!
Such a cool airplane indeed.
so fun! Turbo-props, so loud!
Wow, you are one lucky...' LUCKY guy '!
You guys flew over me lmao!
Love the sound of the BETA
The word “nimble” comes to mind…😎
I was lucky enough to work on OV-10A's at Patrick AFB back in 1980 thru 84. Also got to fly in the backseat once from Nellis to Patrick took two days lol..
Lovely Truckee
How freakin lucky!!
They should just retool and bring this airframe back.
lol I’ve seen you flying lol, I’ve seen the bronco takeoff a few times lol and now I just randomly found your channel lol. That bronco is rad. I was wondering if the Air Force had been using the field because sometimes they’ll land helos or the C130 will come in . Small world lol
I saw him take delivery of that Bronco from Chino on ADS-B, noticed a Bronco flying into Truckee.
This aircraft is awesome. It was a said day when the Corps disbanded the OV10 Squadrons.
Such an amazing capable aircraft!
Awesomeness.....❤❤❤
I would give a kidney to fly in a OV-10!
So cool!
cool plan, i have a 1:48 om mu stash waiting to be built. int 4:46 eresting when she tool off the shadow on the runway was very like an A10 warthog.
I see Kevin Quinn at 2:57, nice!
Was that you flying and landing from the back seat? It looked like a carrier break!
I need a ride to southlake real quick lmao!
A Marine OV-10 pilot I knew used to say "All that, and they pay us, too!"
Cockpit clear material seats perfect wow
I fly the OV-10 for CalFire. If you ever need a ferry pilot let me know! ha
Can we invite a CALFIRE OV-10 to our airshow at Camarillo 3rd weekend of August 2025?
What are those "cannisters" on the outside of each engine? Smoke generators for fire spotting duties?
I always thought the OV-10 was so cool.
Prop sinking is always adjusted during once you get set up for cruise
Just a layman here. Was that a combat landing?
Reverse the props.
That turn to taxi seems abrupt.
looked like a greaser there at the end, Thank You.
It was!! Incredible flight!
Was this out of Grass valley?
Naw, Truckee?
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sync the propellers, you aren’t over the Ho Che Min trail.
wow ...such a 'hot rod'
The Convair Model 48 Charger (which gave the Bronco a run for its money) looked very much like the Bronco but with those clipped wings it looked like a Reno air racer.
so cool
Boy would I like to hear someone say that to me…👍🏼👍🏼😃 are the seats hot in that or deact?
Deact currently, what an incredible plane
Where is this?
I wonder if I turned wrenches on that AC. So long ago.
Can we invite the OV-10 to the Camarillo Airshow on 3rd weekend of Aug. 2025.
Frank Veteran Hangar Host.
Absolutely, who should I have John reach out to?
Crazy! How does this guy have an OV-10?
With operational ejection seats no less.
I believe the ejection seats are in-op. But I guess if your goal is to own an OV-10 bronco and you are serious, you can make anything happen!
Are the ejection seats hot or just for show?
In-operable currently :)
