      I was going to mention that too. All drones being used under part 107 must be registered. I'll throw in that if somebody's not certified 107 they only need one registration for all their drones as opposed to a part 107 remote pilot who needs a registration for each drone.

    Wait until remote ID becomes required. Under the current FAA rule your Drone will have to transmit its registration number, location etc as well as YOUR location. This info will be available in real time to the public with a simple app. That means any nutcase with a cell phone can track down your immediate location and confront you or steal your equipment.

      It can also be used by businesses or other entities who wrongly think that they have the right to prohibit the public from flying over their property.
      For example, there's a ski resort near me which posts on its website that drones are not allowed to fly over their property. Their property is in the middle of a beautiful National Recreation Area where drones are explicitly allowed, and where people do fly to capture great scenic video. Now, imagine being alone on the mountain and being confronted by goons sent out by the resort to stop you from flying.

      Hey Russ. Can you address this in a video when you get time? People need clarification on this.
      Commenter question about things specifically stated in this video:
      "Please clarify about Part 107 requirement: What if I upload to TH-cam or Instagram but have not monetized my content? (So, not making any money and still just a hobby.)"
      My reply: Bit of a gray area. This channel states in the video that you must have a part 107 cert to post videos to TH-cam. That's not true at all. It has everything to do with the intent of the flight. If you are flying strictly for fun/hobby/no intent on making money, you can absolutely post any video of that nature to social media. If you're trying to further a business, monetize said video, or make money, you need a 107 (this is called a money grab by the government). What's more, if you shoot a video with no intent on making money, and are later asked to sell the video for money, you can absolutely do that, because at the time of the flight, there was no intent to make money. Make sense? Just think to yourself, am I just having fun and enjoying flying, or has some one paid me to do this/do I want to sell my footage. We should always fly as safely as possible, and think about many scenarios we may encounter that could cause harm to a person or property. I definitely recommend the TRUST cert at very least, to familiarize yourself with some basics of being in the airspace with manned aircraft. Sorry this is so long, its just not clarified enough in all these you tube videos. good luck, and happy flying!

The thing I appreciate about you both is your straightforwardness and your ability to help us to appreciate the necessity for the rules, the perspective of the FAA, and how to go about getting a good drone education so that you are able to become responsible drone pilot. Knowing that you intentionally partnered with the school that you chose to utilize tells me a whole lot about school itself. Maybe some aren't impressed with sponsorship, but in this particular case you went to them because you believed in the product. 20 some odd years ago when none of this was a concern and before social media was a buzz word with uploads of videos. You could strap a lightweight Sony camera and link to your RC aircraft and fly as far up as you could see it while recording, then watching it with family and friends.
      Today with the National Guard helicopters going overhead at 300 feet, they would have been filmed going underneath it.
      We can all thank Team Black Sheep for flying in the clouds, Ali Shimano for flying across the China sea and a few others for flying across their farmlands rather than getting out and driving for getting the FAA's panties in a bunch.
      Most of all was their knee jerk requirements for having a real commercial pilots license to film with a drone.
      I'm an AOPA member and a friend who flys for United said this was "retarded" because you need a medical card as well as spending some $10 grand just for a PPL, then another $15 for instrument rating and finally give them more money for that commercial rating, not to mention that medical card expires every year until you're 65, then every 6 months afterwards......thank God for 107 sanity.

    Being able to write a complaint anonymously is where the real problem comes in.
    Things like this should never be able to be done anonymously. If you want to take the time to make a complaint it should be mandatory that the FAA and the person the complaint is against know who made the complaint. Then there should be fines for serial complainers that result in no action taken because there weren't any laws or regulations broken.

    • @tsalagiman
      @tsalagiman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Constitutionally, someone who is accused has the right to face their accuser. I realize that is referring to criminal charges, but complaints to the FAA have the potential for charges and fines so in my non-judicial opinion the same principle should apply. I also agree about serial complainers. I think the third unfounded complaint establishes a pattern and fines should be levied from that time on.

    Great video, thank you for informing communities at large and international travelers. Living in Hawaii, I run into Kamikaze pilots all the time. As a part 107 (since 2017), It is very frustrating when folks do not stay within the lines. It only makes the rules going forward more strict, as general UAS pilots are not following the safety guidelines. Most often they just don't know to look into and don't care. This is why companies now impliment geofencing. Then as a commercial operator, it makes getting around those geofencing fustrating when you are staying within the rules.
    At times I get calls from people that know me, wanting to make a formal complaint and wondering how to go about doing so. I inform the caller a bit on what pracitces I use as a commercial operator. And sometimes it pans out for more work. "Information" is key to educating a potential complaint and allowing them to second guess if that complaint is necessary to FAA.
    Cheers and Aloha!

    I 100% agree on the Pilot Institute. I had intended to get my part 107 through finding my own resources and just figuring it out. I quickly learned I am way too busy (and not disciplined enough) to do that, so I also found Greg and the Pilot Institute. I have not tested yet - but I can tell you that I would NEVER have been able to do this without the Pilot Institute class!! I feel so much more prepared than I ever possibly could have bene on my own. Looking forward to scheduling that test soon!

    I really like how you guys want to do the right thing and discourage cutting corners. I’m a CPA and I get questions about taxes from friends, and nobody likes my go-to answer of, “yes, you have to report that as income.” But doing it right from the beginning just makes everything that follows so much easier. If nothing else, that peace of mind is worth a lot.

      That’s not really correct. A part 107 is required “in furtherance of a business” but not if you are only flying recreationally. You actually have fewer restrictions flying recreationally than you do commercially. A good channel to clear that up is Ken Heron, he has a lot of videos about the difference in flying for fun or flying commercially.

    Well done video. I have my Part 107 for the drone, but I am also a Private Pilot. I have a number of videos of both my airplane flying and my drone stuff at my channel. Because I am a Private Pilot, not a Commercial Pilot (for my Single Engine Airplane Rating), I have to be really careful. While I can legally make money with my drone flying, I CANNOT make any money off my airplane flying. No loopholes, no get-out-of-jail free card...I just cannot do it. I have had a few people ask me about monetizing my TH-cam channel, and I refuse to even consider it because losing my Private Pilot Certification is not something I would ever want to risk. I know of a lot of Private Pilots that have monetized TH-cam channels that feature their flying videos, but I just feel that trying to do that is tempting fate with the FAA. The FAA does a pretty good job of sending certified pilots information of hot topics, just this week there was a letter to pilots talking about the misconceptions about "flying for hire" when it comes to passengers. I think this topic would really be one that is worthwhile for the FAA to proactively issue guidance. While I don't monetize my channel, if you are interested, would welcome the subscription. Here is a Safety Video for pilots coming into our local airport here in New Mexico. th-cam.com/video/AmrAX7tSvvQ/w-d-xo.html

    In the UK we used to have the Part 107 equivalent called the PFCO ( Permission For Commercial Operations ) Which required any drone used commercially to be covered by the PCFO. Then in December 2020 the UK adopted the EU policies which changed this to risk categories based on the weight of the drone. If it's under 250g you do not need to be certified here to fly commercially. So for some areas of industry where a Mini2 is sufficient it's a bonus! Having spent thousands on my PFCO only to find out 2 years later it was all changing, I chose to go for a sub 250g drone as I wasn't going to pay yet more money to relearn the same pilot schooling rebranded and packaged under a new title.

    I really liked your video and you presented this is a very nice way. I do have one issue with the situation in general. We are at a point now where you need a license to fly a plane, drive a car, operate a boat, ride a dirtbike in the woods, and much more. We wouldn't have walkie talkies if when they tried to regulate the radio waves the public ignored the rules enough that they were forced to create the Citizen Bands for CB radios. It wasn't all that long ago that I could ride my dirtbike in the woods and only needed to register the bike and truck but now it requires a license. What I'm saying is while I do think some regulation is a good idea, it is important we are careful and we can easily give away something that is near impossible to get back later. As it stands the 250g limit makes no sense, it's not low enough to really be safe and not high enough to allow experimentation in the hobby so vital for our future engineers, astronauts, etc to explore possibilities when playing in the hobby as youths. Right now the majority of the FPV hobbyist are breaking the rules, not because they want to be rebels but because the rules are set up in a way that crushes the hobby as it has been. Given enough law, everyone becomes a law breaker. Your video presents you experience in a very warm light and I'm glad it has gone well for you. But the FAA aren't your friends, they are just people doing a job, if something changes and their department is changed to being funded off fines, best believe they will be finding reasons to fine even you. Just look at drug seizures during the "War on Drug". Eventually that part of our government got to the point they can take Everything You Own, because you are Suspected of drug trafficking, people who were eventually proven innocent still didn't get their stuff or money back.

    Good video for those who do not fly a drone a lot and this will hopefully help ours not go through what you did. As to registering a drone if it is being used during a flight covered under Part 107 you have to register it with you part 107 regardless of the weight. There are 2 types pf drone registration. Recreational (which does consider weight) and one number covers all your drones or Part 107 where each drone has a specific registration number. Also you guys are probably doing it to help speed up the video, but you can fly in national parks or even controlled air space with permission. which would probably be another 2 videos and I am sure you had to answer those questions on your test, So keep up the good work and keep those smiles going as it makes for much better videos.

The FAA came because someone called on me flying a mobula6 around my own head and power looping the lowest tree branch on the tree over my head....

      Bit of a gray area.

    • @StanPeade
      @StanPeade 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mikebfpv In other words, I can imagine starting with the *intent* to make money, but never actually making a penny. In which case, the cost and effort of certification might be a loss. The under 250 grams NOT needing registered only applies recreationally. Once you have a 107 it needs to be registered. When registering as a recreational pilot, the pilot has a registration number that applies to ALL of that persons aircraft. When registering under 107 each drone is registered individually.

    • @citg4217
      @citg4217 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most regulations and process requirements are available on the Internet. Each country has different rules and, like the US, rules can vary down to the locality. Many countries require some form of licensing or registration. Occasionally if you bring in a piece of equipment that's not pre-approved it can get confiscated by customs. Know before you go. Additionally you need to be aware of different radio transmission regulations: The EU for example has different regulations than the US for the frequencies and power that are allowed and you need to be able to set those for compliance on the drone system. Some do this automatically through geo-location, others don't. Going through the 107 process in the US before traveling will give you a huge step up in terms of knowing the basic risk management and safety considerations of drone operation that will help keep you out of trouble in other countries, even if there is no official reciprocity.

    My channel is dedicated primarily to the technology behind Radio Controlled models and the RC hobby, so I just got my Part 107 so I can legally post monetized aerial footage. So many people get defensive about the FAA trying to "regulate their hobby" that they completely miss the fact that studying for the Part 107 gives you a LOT of great information that can actually make you a better and much more conscientious drone/RC pilot.
    For me, the most valuable knowledge was just being able to keep myself out of trouble... legally and technically. Many well intentioned drone/RC pilots make really bad decisions out of ignorance, either not knowing the rules, not knowing how the technology works, or not knowing the details behind things out how they are. Passing your part 107 exam arms you with information to help you make better decisions that could save you from making some pretty costly mistakes..
