New sub here. So many great Stromae songs (and videos!!) to discover: 'Formidable', 'Tous les memes', 'l'enfer', 'Carmen', 'Fils de joie', 'Santé' ,... all are of this standard, with poignant messages and come with unique videos. You can truly have your pick and won't be dissapointed. His live shows are even more mesmerizing and are among the best in the world I feel. (Coming from Belgium I might be a bit biased) His Tiny Desk Concert was also absolute golden btw

Hi. I love Stromae' work, and that's why i found myself watching your videos tonight (this one and the "Papoutai" reaction). I just discovered you, but I wanted to say that I already (really) appreciate the sensibility, the intelligence and the simplicity of your commentary. 🙏 I think it's not that common to find genuine reactions on youtube nowadays, so that's very precious. Forgive my poor english, and Thank you very much for your videos.

One thing that comes really across with the lyrics, as somebody that has leukemia, is how violating cancer feels, especially around the time you're diagnosed and you don't fully know yet if there's a plan. It feels like your body betrays you, but you also dissociate yourself from it, making it this foreign entity creeping on you, on your innermost self. You feel dirty, betrayed, captive from cancer, but since that cancer is also you, you feel guilt, towards your loved ones. What are they going through? What will they go through if I don't make it? How can I be such a burden? The physical pain of the treatment also throws you in turmoil (a "cure worse than the disease" feeling). You're physically and emotionally exhausted, which makes you a shadow of yourself that you don't recognize, furthering the dissociation, can make you lash out at loved ones like a rabid animal sometimes, which you realize right after and adds more guilt to the pile. The psychological effects of cancer are brutal.
I'm better and lucky to have a manageable form (that will however never leave me, I need life-long medication but can otherwise lead a normal life except for the occasional medication side-effects), but the early days were dark.

Bad English subtitles unfortunately. His chanting of the title is a play on words, and if you don't listen carefully it sounds the same. But actually he's swaying between Quand c'est? / cancer - When is it? / cancer. As brilliant as masterful. Even his name itself is from the same genius nature: Stromae / Maestro. We Germans love Stromae, his music, and his art.

Stromae is influenced by many artists, like Jacques Brel (very famous Belgian artist) for music, lyrics and performance. Jacques Tati (famous French movie director, comedian and actor) has been a major influence in his visual style, mostly in the animations including this video. (And his extreme movements on stage)
On his latest album he talks about his difficult times he had after the first two albums. He had on interview on the French nightly news in which he performed his song about his suicidal periods. Every song he makes is a commentary on society and difficult topics. But there are some more cheerful ones you can try.
If you want to understand how popular he is in Europa you should watch his performance on the NRJ Music Awards. Where he performed with Will I Am.
