I've had many triple fried egg chili chutney sandwiches first being exposed to them on Red Dwarf. I since ventured into a nice fried egg curry sandwich, and particularly like a fried egg chili cheese sandwich.

Awesome video..but good sir, you need to watch Red dwarf, immediately! I'm an American myself, but watch that growing up every Saturday night with my parents, back in the 90s. Such an amazing, hilarious show
Dwarf is the reason I took so long to get into star trek tng. Everything just looked too white washed after Dwarf. Still want a shlubby space exploration show more than new trek.
One of my favourite ways of making eggs for a fried egg sandwich is to scramble one of the eggs slightly and leave the other yolk intact. So you end up one big egg white streaked with yolk and then a big gooey whole yolk in the middle. Ends up the perfect size for the buns I like to have the eggs on.
I have just tried a variation of this, two fried eggs two pieces of toasted bread and srachica sauce, mango chutney... Unbelievably tasty!!! Equal to the "Terry carnation"! Red dwarf was brilliant also.
I think this is the first sandwich I've ever seen you take two bites in quick succession! The next fried egg sandwich I make, toasted bread, mango chutney, chili sauce and cilantro!
When im really hungry I make a great triple decker sandwich. First layer from the bottom gets tomato relish then chicken, ham, cheese, franks hot sauce and lettuce then mayo on the bottom of the next slice and wholegrain mustard on top then you build up with pepperoni or chorizo, another kind of cheese (I usually go with chedder/mozzarella) then pickles and a bit more mayo on the top slice
Yay, a part of my past! I remember watching Red Dwarf on my local PBS station when I was young. Some of the jokes and innuendos went over my head at age 10, but I caught enough of the low brow humor that kept me watching. We also did not have cable access until after I graduated from college, so I had to plan around the tv schedule if I wanted to see the episodes in order. When I was in college, I introduced my then boyfriend (now husband) to the show and now he’s just as much of a fan as I am.
Barry, please consider putting the Diablo Sandwich enjoyed by Sheriff Buford T. Justice in the classic American movie “Smokey and the Bandit” from 1977 on your R&D list. There’s been a great deal of discussion about this sandwich online over the years. There will never be a consensus on the original recipe, assuming that it even existed outside of the screenwriter’s imagination, so you will have a wide road to navigate on your own interpretation. The only constants are smoked pulled pork on a hamburger bun with hot sauce. I’m certain that you can plus up a version that would make Sheriff Justice happy. It must me enjoyed with an ice cold Dr Pepper!
Its an interesting question as to what chutney should be used in this. Many would suggest Mango chutney I suppose as is used in the video and because of curry being Lister's favourite food. Except that ignores one thing Lister's curry obession is a character trait from series three onwards and the sandwich is Thanks for Memory in series two.
I made my own scaled back version of this with just one egg and two pieces of bread, (well, a toasted bagel in actuality). I used caramelized onion chutney, as that's all I could find at the store and added a nice aged cheddar which paired with everything marvellously.
I love the show and I have indeed made this sandwich on certain occasions, sometimes on an artisan boule with three eggs and seared ham. It's really good and a pretty solid, filling egg sandwich. And yes, whenever I make it, I toast the bread.
I made a version of this and it was quite good. My adjustments:1. use toasted whole wheat bread, it holds up to the eggs better 2. Don't do a triple deck, two slices of bread and 2 eggs are enough for one person I used Sriracha from Tabasco and it was not hot enough Next tima I'd go with a Louisiana style hot sauce. I think the additional heat and acidity will go even better with the richness of the egg yolk and the sweetness of the chutney. Very nice sandwich but really messy.
Wow, this is such a throwback! I watched Red Dwarf a bunch as a child. I didn't remember how to make this, but I think I will have to give it (or a version like it) a go.
I've been a fan of Red Dwarf since it started airing on PBS a million years ago- And I've made this sandwich. It really is fantastic. Lister was a sleeper food genius.
i just tried this sandwich, i made it a regular sandwich with 2 slices of toasted bread and 2 eggs, with mango chutney and (tabasco brand) sriracha. it's pretty good, i let the eggs cook longer so they were less runny and it was not nearly as messy, you do have to use a pretty decent amount of hot sauce though because the chutney can easily overpower it
Congratulations on over 1,000 likes!! It may have happened on other videos, but the first time I've seen it. You can't really go wrong with fried eggs in sandwiches, though don't need that many!! Feel like whipping a more manageable one up myself soon now after seeing this. Thanks as always!!
I've made this sandwich a few times. You have to eat it fast because the bread starts to get soggy and sticks to your fingers. I switch out the chili sauce for red chili. It's really a good filling sandwich. The addition of Basil is an interesting idea. I'll have to try it.
1) Red Dwarf is FANTASTIC. 2) We've actually been making a version of this ever since we saw it on the programme lol WE use garlic pickle Chutney and - mood depending - either the Vietnamese chili sauce or Coriander sauce. SOOOOO good and tasty.
